If you want to pratice without hurting stats (if you worry about that stuff) join a clan. (See link in my sig) or any other clan. Just a thought

Ok yeah good idea thanks! Strangely enough, my best skill is with aeroplanes but nobody likes to see a private 1st class taking the aeroplanes now do they lol.

ill share some of my tips

-computer performance can greatly impact a game. you might not realize it but if u get a low frame rate u can be disadvantaged. try lowering your graphics settings a bit, because i find the default one gets too laggy. frames are important.

-change the controls to your likings. I have primary weapon (3rd one) set to the mouse wheel button. If im throwing med packs around, and i quickly need my gun, all i need to do is press the mouse wheel and out comes my ak.

-try to use numbers when selecting weapons. scrolling takes way too long in my opinion. Just practice finding numbers 1-6 with your middle and index fingers, ive pretty much mastered all of them without looking.

-raise the sensitivity on ground vehicle weapons. the stock, 1.00 sensitivity is too low and you'll have to track your mouse 3 times before i can do a 360 in a tank turret. i find 1.00 is ok for infantry weapons.

-most weapons work best with bursts. Support guns however, are by default less accurate, but they do not end up as innaccurate as other guns after firing for a long time. This means u can do longer bursts while support, and it will still be effective. Just remember always go prone and stay still while firing support.

-be nimble! it might seem to complicated now, but if your getting fired and you dont know where its coming from, hop like a bunny (if the server allows it) and dont listen to people, its not noobish to bunnyhop, its pro. try to always save sprint for when u need it most, requires patience. one advanced move is when someone is shooting at u close range, and is prone, you should sprint toward them, quickly turn and jump to their side, go prone while airbone, land right beside them and shoot em in the face. they have little chance at winning.

-another good tip is try to learn the weapon/vehicle names. I remember when i first played i was clueless as to how i was killed, and by looking at the weapon used to kill u (in the top left) u can learn from your mistakes. Remember, 196a1 = sniper rifle, l85a1 = assault rifle.

i have good days and bad days, like one day i ll be owning peeps, then other days ill drop dead before i had a chance to shoot.

really the more time u play the better u get, i got better by learning my way around the masp, learning where all good spots are and which veichles spaen where.

When medic, avoid med-pack spamming for the sake of being able to do it... in other words, place your med packs in predictable paths where people will likely run (increasing your chance they'll pick one up.) Most people med-pack the hell out of a flag, but only half the people that charge a flag make it there...

Also, the best thing about being a medic is that you can heal yourself. So don't feel like you only have one chance to do something... take it easy, you can always pull back, heal yourself, and get back into it...

I would go one step further then using your 1-6 keys for weapons.

Map Assault Rifle , pistol, to keys that are directly under you fingers. Have them available to you with out reaching. The others kit items (shock paddles, mines, etc etc) can be set to a key stroke just out of your reach.

Remember that BF2 isn't really like other "twitchy" shooters. There's a certain amount of randomness no matter how well you take aim. No one really becomes a "Rambo" in this game. If they do it tends to be in very narrowly defined situations.

Do you want to be a good player or do you want to be good at BF2?

IMO those are two entirely different things. If you want to be a kick *** player, then by all means play city maps and run the well worn routes between Hotel and Square over and over again. Then check your stats for a good K/D ration and try again. But you've got a lot of catching up to do. Becoming obsessed with your stats as an indication of how good a player you are, can be a dead end street. There's always some one better, they could be stat padding, and your more then likely going to come across hackers and cheaters playing BF2 like a twitchy shooter. It's where their hacks become the most useful.

If you want to be good at BF2, do many things well. Know maps, know the spawns and where they are located. Find ways of getting to them instead of assaulting them from the front every time. Join a squad. Lead a squad. Lay mines in chokepoints. Know the choke points, and when mining them is the most advantageous. May AA against choppers. Find ways to capture the first spawns on difficult maps (Wake, STM etc etc). Take and hold an enemy's most prized spawn point (air strips and such). Don't be afraid to take a bad game statistically to win by defending something.

This game has so much more to offer then playing city maps and checking your K/D , rank, and global points after every round. That's not what it does best. It makes many different things excellent contributions to a win, rather then just killing as many people as you can every round. That's really what it does the best. It's simply not a very good individual shooter for a test of your skill and hand eye coordination. As many have said they play for 100s of hours and still get owned. There's a reason for that, the reason is the game is geared towards team work, not "ramboism". Although many try and play it that way and will tout their statistics as proof, it's only they who are fooling themselves. Any one boasting about K/D ratios in infantry most likely is manipulating them by selective map and server selection. Even right down to where they spawn and how they play. It's a one dimensional way of looking at the game, and really a shame since there is so much more.

So......

Don't worry about how "good" your are. Concentrate on knowing the game, and what it takes to win. Be a good teammate, and a squad member or leader. Have fun, met a group you like to play with and play with them often. You'll get more out of the game then any person who constantly is checking their stats and then adjusting their game play to influence them. They're playing a certain way because of a mindless and simple computer program that collects information. The better and more fun way to play is to simply play the game and experience all it's elements.

Heres one the other people didnt mention. If you find a good person to play with spend as much time playing on the same server as possible. You can use BF2s to find them. Just keep a note pad by your computer to write things down such as good players names. It will give you a big boost to have a good role model to begin with. Good luck. . . . . . .Red

Oh and don't forget the single player game. At easy level the bots are dumb, but they are good target practice drones. Try to win a round with less than 30 or even 15 deaths, using only Medic kit on Single player Strike at Karkand map.

barracudaj mentioned about picking a good commander/squad leader to work with. I agree with that. For your case, start with joining squads with good squad leader first. What hints a good squad leader? Usually the following: they chat (use VOIP), they give detail directions of what to do, they don't die often, and/or they've a high kill/death ratio.

Chatting means that squad leader is willing to interact with the teammates. Giving direction means squad leader is actually trying to accomplish something (stop ticket bleed by capture far flags, defend the last flag, etc) instead of just jacking up his scores. Staying alive means he's a good mobile spawn point and you guys don't have to walk all over again to attack a flag. High kill/death ratio... well he's an live example of how to be a pixel-killing machine.

Why stick with a good squad leader? Things he does often is probably what you should learn to do as well. Route he asks you to take, when to strike a flag, when to revive your teammates, etc etc.... people have written all about those, but it's easier to learn by watching examples.

BF2 is my first squad-based spawn-based online FPS game. Aside from all those BS bugs, I enjoy it a lot especially the vehicles and teamworks. Hope you will like it as well. Have fun.

Wow those last few people have excellent tips! Thanks! I have just been hanging around a Major for the past hour and have certainly improved. I havn't tried squads much so I'll give that a go now. What would you say the best class for someone quite new to the game is?
