Again, try to comprehend before you answer (there's no shame in reading things twice, I know you can do it :)
Diarrabies replied to me in a much more sensible way.

Since you seem to be so well informed about my habits in the game I suppose you looked me up. Well I had a look at your profile too. Both our global score is around 70k, you have played roughly 300h more than I did (not judging that, we both wasted quite some time on the game)
Most of my 630h I spend on city maps. The rural maps I've been on for 15-20h, even a little more than you have. The big difference is you played on Dragon Valley for 380h, thats more than double the amount of time that I've been on any map. So I guess you're rather one sided there. In this light your argument about me being on city maps much appears pretty lame.

You became quite obsessed with yards, dind't you. I can only refer you to earlier posts, there you'll find your answer. Reading is the key here.

I would appreciate your library card, if i ever go to the Netherlands...

I can only guess how you feel but I'm sure I'm not far off. I'll close this with Shakespeare: "... but for mine own part, it was Greek to me."
I didnt reply to you on the subject of having a sniper on a squad is a good or bad thing. I couldnt care less because for me personaly a squad around me means an Arti Strike within one minute. So txs but no txs.

I posted about the assumed proficiency of the average medic out there being able to take on the average sniper out there in a shoot-out over 250 meters.
Its not going to happen and Diarrabies allready explained why.

Reading FTW I guess ... or not it seems.

Figured I'd bump this and get some more input.

I reinstalled BF2 + BF2:SF today and played some Ghost Town. Ghost Town is probably my favourite map to play as a Sniper, and probably my favourite map in general, because it's got alot of urban combat without the usual problems of the typical city map (ie; grenade spamming, prone spamming, claymore spamming etc etc).

I made an observation that's it's not just new players who are drawn to the Sniper kit, but everybody in general.

I would wager this is because people tend to see the Sniper as a very glamorous kit, and everybody likes to think of themselves as Simo Häyhä or something.

It gets rather annoying though, when I'm forced to play another kit because 3/4 of my team are already playing as a Sniper, sitting on a rooftop somewhere, twiddling their thumbs.

I like to think of myself as open-minded, but the sniper has a really, really narrow use. The problem with the sniper is twofold:

                  - First of all, sniper rifles just aren’t all that good if common assault rifles are great at long-distance combat as well. Add to that that on most common maps there isn’t even that much long-distance combat to begin with, and you’ll really be wishing you were wielding an AK instead of a sniper rifle. This disadvantage turns into disaster if unlocks aren’t considered either, as the SVD isn’t the greatest of sniper rifles, and the M24, though good, is vastly inferior (imho) when compared to the L96 (sights).

                  - Secondly, claymores are certainly powerful, but since medic is the most common class in the game anyway, it’s far from unlikely that even if you kill 20 people with your claymores during the course of a round, you didn’t make them lose a single ticket (because they have been revived constantly).

Snipers do nothing for their team IMO.

There is probably nothing I find more satisfying than popping a sniper at range with my trusty iron-sighted G36E!! :p

Well, even before they install the game...the idea of being a sniper..a SNIPER is just thrilling! To on some distant roof top picking off helpless enemys...It sounds great! Then they get into the game and either A: Become a good sniper B: Change kits or C: Continue sniping and become a BAD sniper

On point 1. Long Distance Combat for a Sniper is somewhere between 300 and 450 meters in my book. You and your assault rifle cannt even make me out beyond 200 meters.

                              Furthermore this table ...

... shows clearly that a Sniper can engage any target, he has a Line Of Sight to, up to 600 meters in some maps. People like dont_be_ss have made it their trademark to harass people from that distance.
Any other class in the game has to move to a position in the map before it can do combat. The Sniper when in the right position has to do a lot less traveling. On some maps I have spots from which I can cover half the map without moving more than 50 meters.

Here are my Stats on Kills by Distance and Position in BF2: Prone , Crouching and Standing.
From the Prone Stats you can see that more than 60% of my kills have been from distances greater than 200 meters. The below 150 meter columns are from my Ghost Town/ Devils Perch days.

The M24 is my trademark weapon and equal to the L96 in characteristics ingame. The thinner crosshairs on the L96 only come into play when you are either trying to snipe a fast mover or shooting over 400 meters. Thats from experience. The fast movers I have learned to intercept with several tactics. The long distance shots come to me naturally after having spent over a 1000 hours with the Kit.
But I can see where the majority of the players prefer the scope on the L96, because it feels more precise and gives just that extra bit of view on a target.

On point 2. Claymores allways work as an early warning system when placed somewhat away from a CP at a chokepoint. I place them just outside of CP cap zones so I get a headsup when somebody is trying to cap a flag when I am not covering it atm. It usually gives me enough time to gt in position to defend the CP and throw some nades or from a greater distance cover the CP zone.
If you place clays in certain parts of the CP zone you cannot cover with your Rifle you force the enemy to move in your Line of Sight.
In any case the claymores where not intended for defending CPs when they were first handed out to the Kit. At least I didnt get that impression. They were certainly not meant for suicide runs we see nowadays. But the Clay, when properly positioned, is still effective to take out Fast Moving buggies and lone CP cappers. And in all cases it will buy time if nothing else in combatsituations. A medic reviving a teammate is just another target with no weapon for me.

I usually snipe because I want to take advantage of my 10ms ping while everyone else has 50 > 100.
