... shows clearly that a Sniper can engage any target, he has a Line Of Sight to, up to 600 meters in some maps. People like dont_be_ss have made it their trademark to harass people from that distance.
Any other class in the game has to move to a position in the map before it can do combat. The Sniper when in the right position has to do a lot less traveling. On some maps I have spots from which I can cover half the map without moving more than 50 meters.

Here are my Stats on Kills by Distance and Position in BF2: Prone , Crouching and Standing.
From the Prone Stats you can see that more than 60% of my kills have been from distances greater than 200 meters. The below 150 meter columns are from my Ghost Town/ Devils Perch days.

The M24 is my trademark weapon and equal to the L96 in characteristics ingame. The thinner crosshairs on the L96 only come into play when you are either trying to snipe a fast mover or shooting over 400 meters. Thats from experience. The fast movers I have learned to intercept with several tactics. The long distance shots come to me naturally after having spent over a 1000 hours with the Kit.
But I can see where the majority of the players prefer the scope on the L96, because it feels more precise and gives just that extra bit of view on a target.

On point 2. Claymores allways work as an early warning system when placed somewhat away from a CP at a chokepoint. I place them just outside of CP cap zones so I get a headsup when somebody is trying to cap a flag when I am not covering it atm. It usually gives me enough time to gt in position to defend the CP and throw some nades or from a greater distance cover the CP zone.
If you place clays in certain parts of the CP zone you cannot cover with your Rifle you force the enemy to move in your Line of Sight.
In any case the claymores where not intended for defending CPs when they were first handed out to the Kit. At least I didnt get that impression. They were certainly not meant for suicide runs we see nowadays. But the Clay, when properly positioned, is still effective to take out Fast Moving buggies and lone CP cappers. And in all cases it will buy time if nothing else in combatsituations. A medic reviving a teammate is just another target with no weapon for me.
Jemme101 you talk to much crap.

Snipers are just useless against olmost every kit except engineer.
And why it's useless, because I played 14 monthes of BF2 and I can only remember 5 great distance shots around 350M, 2 headshots because I was standing still(mine fault) and the three other shots where nice headshots indeed of the snipers.

But snipers don't really kill me much at great distance and those snipers are one of the better snipers around this game but the avarge snipers use their kit as an aussalt kit

Also snipers who defend flag area's are easy target because there are only some good spots for the sniper to take somebody down when trying to take over the flag. and when you know where the shots are comming from, hiding behind an object is the main objective when you have taken over backyard or something, so you can't hit him while he is hiding behind the object and you still loose your flag.

and then mine next objective is happy hunting against the sniper who wantend to kill me, and there for a nade/M203/single shot/AT is enough to kill that poor sniper.

also Snipers against good aimers/players are most of the time death at a range of 250M or even 300M with a m16/AK  (single shots are that powerfull )

But still snipers has there advangtes at that distance but it doesn't matter if you know where they are some strafing to get some closer is the trick with some cover.

Sorry but when out at 300 plus metres you won't make many kills. Even if you make one or two you'll be spotted, either by the commander or someone who knows the map. Once you've been spotted, if someone on the other team knows what he is doing, you're a dead man. Weapon of chocie will be an AK, M16 or G36 variant, and in some cases even a AT rocket.

I've played many times when I've come against snipers and I normally ignore them. I prefer to go after those doing the ground work and taking my teams flags, with what ever assault weapon or vehicle I happen to be in. One single sniper at 400 metres away won't worry me.

Seriously, out of the maps you've mentioned about long range targets, not many players play ouside of Jets, Heli's or Armour. And please don't tell me you can headshot a fast moving car driver.

So you're telling me that your clay takes out a person, out of your line of site yet you can take the medic out with your rifle? Sorry but that doesn't add up.

If there is a hard working squad with at least two medics, who also have teamwork down to a tea, you'll be useless. Granted you'll make one or two kills, but the squad will more then likely carry on and cap that flag.

IMO if you're a crack shot with the Sniper Rifle then you're also a crack shot with an Assault Rifle. You'd do much more damage with one of these at 150 metres then you'd ever hope for with a sniper rifle.

^^ But how many times you will stay guarding that flag of yours. If I see a bunch of medics coming towards me I'll hide and take the flag right after you leave it. May even leave few green hello cards on the ground for you to do the job again. :p

Snipers are a competely useless kit. The majority of snipers struggle to get 10 kills a round. Those 10 kills are rarely of help to anyone. BF2 is mostly about capturing flags; that is how your team wins. Snipers are basically the only kit that can't do that, thus they are of little help to anyone. In case you haven't noticed, the team that has the more snipers is usually the team that loses.

I think chaz32 hit the nail on the head. Sniper is a powerful weapon in most other games, so new players think it'll be that way in BF2. Also, I think a lot of new players don't have much skills yet, so they play sniper until they learn the game.

Yep, commander is a ***** if he is up his task. Most aren't. But as much as I hate people underestimating what a good sniper can do, I have to admit that keeping pure sniper only is stupid. If I know there is a bunch of enemies rushing towards my spawn point, there is no reason to spawn as a sniper, support is much better tool for that task.

Still I guarantee that there will be very supprised corpses in the field if not playing wisely against my rifle. Also keep in mind that I'll retreat when neccessary. I'll just keep asking arty and spotting you silent. Capable commander is very good tool for me too, pity that there are only few of them.

when i began playing i picked sniper because i sucked and the kit allowed me to be away from the action and still get kills, also w the scope u can learn alot about game play by just simply watching the action where to place c4, where to place mines, and so on, the kit is a great learning tool, and w practice it becomes a killing machine w your immediate surroundings protected by claymore, which is what the claymore is meant to do, provide personnel protection against enemys walking up on u, u cant c them as u hunt for targets in the scope. the claymore will take them out and warn u of incoming squad, go to the pistol and take out the medic first!!!!

It is not the job of a Sniper to capture flags. Just like it is not a Medic's job to repair vehicles .

If we follow some of your logic, we can assume that Medic's are uesless because they can't resupply you with ammo.

Each class is good at something different.

A Sniper can take flags if neccessary, but more importantly, they can sit there, watching the flag, making sure it isn't taken.

Keeping your flags is just important as taking others.

It are just a fact that most snipers are just claymore whore to get some easy points because there is no way to destroy them for an infantry man.
