On most maps, snipers are fairly useless.

There are of course, some awesome snipers out there that make a good contribution to their team, but they are in the vast minority. If all those average snipers out there getting ten kills or less a round spawned as medic, assault or support (or AT on some maps), then their teams would be FAR more likely to win...

If I use the sniper kit then only on mec and with the default gun. SVD just owns your family and every headshot feels special with it.

A lot of times when I use it, my friend goes to cap a base and I scope the area from afar, warn him of any enemies, and them out if I get a clear shot.

New players like sniping because they can stay back a safe distance and have a perceived advantage. The thick of combat probably scares them and they probably don't know maps well enough to run around and do anything worth while. Plus they've probably been watching Enemy at the Gates too much.
