PlaneWhore's list of essential BF2 gameplay changes for the 1.4 patch

    Pay attention DICE.

Let's face it.. with BF2142 on the horizon the 1.4 patch is in all likelihood the last patch BF2 will ever receive, so it should be a damn good one. So I decided to compile my own personal list of tweaks I'd do to the game if I was one of the designers. I'm excluding bugs from this list.. because they're pretty much a given and all too obvious. Gameplay balance tweaks only.

Time to cut to the chase, I'm going to make these suggestions as simple as possible (For the "lite" version just read the bolded text):

    1) NERF THE J-10 WITHOUT JUST BOOSTING AA MISSILES LAZY BASTAGES - I'm listing this one first because it really is a very big problem that causes 4 different maps to become unbalanced rape fests and knowing the attention span the people at DICE have it's the first thing I want to them to see. However if you're still reading this far in I have a far better solution:

    2) Completely rework all airplanes and the AA missiles. These elements of the game have been flawed since the BF2 demo. Two things need to happen to complete this change:

2a) Rework handling on the planes to be different, but more or less equal, then give planes unique characteristics which define them. These are minor changes that aren't game breaking like the J-10. I'm talking about more afterburner for the J-10, faster flare reload for the MiG and slightly more powerful bombs for the F-35B. You get the idea.. make it your own

2b) Scrap AA missiles current system all together. The current system isn't working. Make AA missiles based off skill and not off of luck. This is simple to do.. increase the range on all AA and create a small lock zone (slightly smaller than AT crosshair). Decrease the initial lock time.. but force the person firing the AA missile to keep the targeted centered in the "sweet spot" till the missile hits. Missiles fired in this manner and perfectly tracked will be perfectly accurate. If the target leaves the extended range the missile loses lock, if the user of the missile lets the target leave the sweet spot the missile loses track and goes lame. Pilots would have this exact same system in their cockpit. The only difference would be a larget lock zone to compensate for the less than instant nature of aiming an aircraft towards something. This would promote cannon use and would put the skill back in dogfighting.

    3) Make the assault class useful again - How you want to go about this is up to you.. my suggestions of potential fixes: Increase the armor of the assault class by about double, slightly increase the explosive range of the GL, give the assault class an accuracy bonus when standing or moving (this would fit in great with the whole purpose of an "assault class) - or a combination of the above.

    4) Add a vehicle TK discouragement/vehicle fair sharing system - As a pilot who has experienced my fair share of this I'm especially motivated to curb this type of behavior. The solutions would be as follows: If a player teamkills another player they cannot enter helicopters, airplanes, tanks, or APCs for a period of about a minute. This will completely stop the TK for a vehicle mindset as it will no longer be a valid option. Secondly to prevent vehicle "hogging" add a short 1 second delay on entering a vehicle that you have just died in. An example of this would be a pilot dies.. back at the airstrip if another player was waiting for the vehicle he'd be able to enter it before the previous pilot. Finally... get rid of teamkills created by running people over with aircraft.. it's lame and unnecessary. In all my time playing BF2 I have yet to witness an aircraft intentionally running players over (as if it was even possible). These simple changes would eliminate the vast majority of griefing and TKing that occurs around and for vehicles.

    5) Restore the blackhawk gun to its former glory. Every time I see that useless BH I get sad. You've already made a great change by increasing the armor on transports... now restore some offensive power to them. The minigun doesn't have to be as godly as it used to be.. but somewhere in between where it was and where it is now. Splash damage with a smaller than before radius and slightly less damage should do the trick nicely.

    6) Add new game modes FFS. No I'm not talking about IO crap. I'm talking about instead of Conquest think about adding a new mode.. what do you call it again? That mode where you have to capture the flags in a predefined order. Yeah people want that. Adding an option for an unranked "deathmatch" mode would probably be greatly appreciated and fun twist to the game too. All spawn points spawnable by any player.. all runways rearm ect.. and then you can have an all out war.

    7) Give AT players 1 point for hitting a vehicle that has an enemy inside. Perfectly fair way to balance AT players scores out and give them the points they've been deserving for a long time

    8) As mentioned in 6.. don't add an IO mode. Nothing wrong with an UNRANKED vehicle "lite" mode.. but only the Knife and Pistol jerks want a ranked IO mode.. so please don't do it.

    9) Whatever you did to BF2 performance between the demo version and the current version.. undo it please. My performance has gone down.. and many other players report the same exact thing. As I recall though my performance was great during the 1.12 patch I believe.

    10) Decrease the damage the 50 cal machine guns do to helicopters (about 20%-25%). Considering these things litter most maps I don't think it'd be too radical of a change. I often times find myself going head on Vodnik vs. a AH and somehow I destroy them before they destroy me. This change coupled with new improved AA would create what I can only describe as perfectly balanced helicopters.

    11) Add a maximum range to TOW missiles. Pixel shooting is lame.

    12) Add a first person mode to the spectator cams. I can think of no better way to help catch the aimbotters and wallhackers in the act and plus it works for Counterstrike so why can't it work for you?

    13) Finally but certainly not last... revert the changes you made to squad hopping. It was a perfectly valid tactic that increased the usefulness of squads. The current squads system makes simple tasks such as changing squads when you're dead or want to switch kits a real royal pain in the arse.

    14) Up the speed that engineers gain repair points by 200%-300%. Also the way repair points should be calcuated is different. Say an engineer gets 2 or 3 points for a full repair on a tank. So the engineer finds a badly damaged tank and begins to repair. The engineer gets 2 points but is just 2 or 3 armor bars shy of a third point. Those bars the engineer got repaired on the tank but never got a point for are "saved" so the next friendly vehicle the engineer repairs he would get another repair point within the first 1 or 2 bars of the repair. Simple and fair.

    15) Claymores should be able to be detonated by high-end explosives. Grenades, tank shells, airplane bombs, TV missiles, artillery and C4 should all be able to destroy claymores. However lesser explosives such as helicopter guns, airplane cannons and the APC gun would be unable to destroy them. The fact that people have to suicide and revive to remove claymores now is just plain sad.

That's my list... feel free to add your own.

2b: this I can agree with but under 2 conditions. Either this change only affects aircraft launched AA, or all ground AA units get 4x their current missle capacity.

          Your choice.

            14) Fix the controls problem already! The problem is I and alot of other players use the arrows to play, not the WASD buttons. The thing is, we can't use the arrow buttons twice, for example in Infantry controls and in Vehicle controls at the same time. But you can use the WASD buttons in all controls at the same time. Please fix this, I do not enjoy having to reach over to the WASD to drive vehicles. It can get quite annoying. :)

That's all I have to add.

Good luck with that list, the planes & helicopters will most likely not be changed but I agree with the AT suggestion... too bad we can't get some retroactive points on all those missle hits!

                100% correct.

Good suggestions though, nonetheless. Not sure about the .50 cal damage though. I think it's ok. What bothers me, is that while in a chopper, not hearing any rounds hitting me, or seeing any damage indication, until all of a sudden, BOOM! Yes, I should be paying attention to my damage indicator, but sometimes, I see or hear nothing until it's too late.

Am I the only one that experiences that?

EDIT: Oh, and double the repair points for engineers. I have over 350 hours as engineer, and have yet to achieve my expert repair badge. Even 20 repair points IAR is too much for the current wrench system.

I think you're not giving my system a fair shake because giving them 4x missile capacity would without a doubt overpower the launchers.. a slightly faster reload time maybe at the most but that's it. Currently I find that S2A missiles are absolutely zero threat to me in their current form. Why? Simply put.. because I can outrange them and I'll always kill them before they can get a single missile off.

In the improved system S2A missiles would be able to fire at me before I saw the box they'd display.. thus they get an immediate boost in power right from the get go. Going a bit deeper, a skilled player with a good aim would make them even more powerful and given enough skill would never miss a missile. A newbie player would however virtually have ZERO chance of killing a skilled pilot as it should be. Finally a pilot would actually have a chance to pull some fast and crazy moves and squirm his way out of the targeters "sweet spot".

To summarize.. the winners = skilled pilots and skilled S2A users with good aims, the losers = crappy pilots who don't move right and crappy S2A users who can't aim. Or in other words.. just as it should be.

                    3) Make the assault class useful again - How you want to go about this is up to you.. my suggestions of potential fixes: Increase the armor of the assault class by about double, slightly increase the explosive range of the GL, give the assault class an accuracy bonus when standing or moving (this would fit in great with the whole purpose of an "assault class) - or a combination of the above.
simplier - add 3 more smoke grenades. add MORE magazines [like 10 for ak, 10 for g3], in the same time LIMIT number of magazines on medics!!!!! [as long as medics have the same/better [grenades/g36e] assault capabilities, noone is going to be assault]. give assault alsno NORMAL grenades. up their count.

                    5) Restore the blackhawk gun to its former glory. Every time I see that useless BH I get sad. agree, but due risk of heavy stat padding it has 0 chance of succes [as all other changes mentioned here btw]

                    10) Decrease the damage the 50 cal machine guns do to helicopters (about 30-40%). Considering these things litter most maps I don't think it'd be too radical of a change. no. on some maps [sharqi] it is the ONLY AA we have. as DICE did their f.. best to place AA in most useless positions possible. my tweak - make it so i can hear being shot at with .50cal. it is a bug anyway.

                    my own suggestion:

engy get his repair point at 3 times faster rate. rate of repair is the same, but you need only 1/3 of a tank to get a point. not 1.1 tank..

Nice ideas. I think the AA one is a particularly intriguing. I guess though that a radical change like this would be far beyond the realms of patch material alas, especially since this is thought to be the final patch and the amount of testing involved to reach the right balance of new AA with the proposed .50 cal nerf to choppers would be astronomical!

The changes proposed for the jets are also probably too radical for a final patch and maybe only the message your trying to get across might be applicable to 1.4. After all, the jets do need rebalanced amongst themselves and the static AA still does suck badly.

Shame. Many of these might have been better received and adopted if they had been highlighted a lot earlier in the patching process.

Unless you can give a good reason why artificial TK punishments is a bad idea it's still very much a good idea and very needed to tame the airplane TKs. The zero respawn timer could work however... but the only problem with your solution is reduces the reward you get for killing a plane in the first place. Shoot a plane down only to have it back in the air passing overhead within seconds. I don't think the infantry would like that much. So while my system is a little more complicated it maintains the balance of the planes much better.

Simpler is not always better. Smoke grenades are near useless, and all nerfing the number of magazines a medic has versus assault would do is encourage more support players to run with medics (besides that, when is the last time you managed to run through 10 clips before dying). Support has better guns than assault too and gets points for giving supply packs. You need to give assault players more defense and/or offense otherwise they remain useless.

I'd prefer dealing with a terror in the sky rather than a useless gimp in the sky that is nothing more than a big flying joke. The BH is slow... big and easy to see. If you die to the minguns you failed to pay attention to it. My suggestion to you at that point would to be to duck and take cover and hop in the improved AA launchers when you can for an easy target. The blackhawk is slower than jets and attack helicopters thus is the perfect easy target for the new AA. Perfect balance if you ask me.

I'd rather give the thousand legitimate AT players points they deserve and deal with a handful of new stat padders as a result. Plus.. think about what you'd need to pad like this. You'd need buddies to be in said vehicle, you'd have to hit it with a missile, they'd hop out to repair it and you'd have to get supply kits or a crate to get more missiles. As far as I know that's less efficient than other padding methods.

You act like I don't play Sharqi. I do and considering it's a very small map with LOTS of transports and FIVE AA launchers I think it's a very harsh map for helicopters. The numbers would need to be tweaked for sure (I only gave a ballpark) but the fact that a dime a dozen transport can roast a helicopter from just about any range before they hit the first overheat seems wrong to me. I hardly ever pilot helicopters so don't accuse me of favoritism but I certainly do kill them by the dozen.

I agree with you on this point because engineers really do need more repair points for the job they do.

You are giving yourself the advantage from here. Cazzy and I, both dedicated groundpounders, agree that making the AA turret all-powerful is the way to go. One of our main reasons is the fact that almost everyone hates plane and helo whores. An extremely large part of the BF2 community are also groundpounders, therefor, you'll have to win us over, before DICE even cares about this thread. You're one man, not 100,000, and there have been a million other threads like this. Also, though your points are good, you haven't tried them out yourself, how are you sure that they will balance?

I don't know why you'd even comment on this. I DO want a IO mode because I enjoy infantry, and do not respect K/D ratios of Aviators/Tankers. The only reason I can see someone NOT wanting this mode is because they can't play infantry. Why would you want to remove a feature you wouldn't use? I say scrap the Jets instead. :p
