Problems after patches will remain as long as EA is so paranoid about their products and won't let the public do any beta testing, just like it has been done with the UT2004 server binaries. There was a mailing list everyone could subscibe to if he wanted to test UT2004 betas AFAIK.

Re: An Open Letter To EA/Dice From StrafeRight

Afte some pondering I have a feeling that 2142 is going to be just another attempt to generate income from a market place full of jaded and wise gamers who have seen the light.

We are approaching the one year anniversary of the game. Anyone notice?

I think that the game industry is probably broken and needs to be fixed. It has to start with the players and be manned with people who have passion for the game instead of the "Next Big Release" and see it all the way thru thru the trials and tribulations.

You say that you only have a limited number of testers. Bleah. Ive tested for Novalogic with hundereds if not thousands of other testers on two of thier games, believe that the private beta forums were filled with good and bad news that really helps the game. The one thing I remember about that test period is the constant need to have coding that fit the "Dailup user" it was fun because the so called "Lower class have-nots" in dailup (No offense) can cut down the big uber-cable/fiber Assault Meathead with a fair chance.

But for BF2 you gotta beef the hardware, connections and discard now-inadequate computers. I dont recall a game that had such an impact on players economy in the real world upgrading or building rigs designed to break stuttering, connection errors and most famously the "Verifying Client Data" loading time that infuriates so many gamers. Maybe we are fools for trying to fix a broken game by taking this to the max.

It hardly matters because I have gamed for 30 years and nothing matters except fast hardware, good connections and decent games.

Imagine if thousands of BF2 players were able to beta test BF2. Not some mailing list or very small controlled server tests using hardware that is probably very advanced on conncetions that might be beefier than what the average squad or clan can afford.

Why is it that a computer flight simulation designed in the late 80's using a 32 megabyte video card running on a old 486 computer have so many "Switches and Buttons" with accurate weapons and alot of playablity. And we are zooming around in sanitized california safe games with one button for super go-fast and a big joystick to turn with? This is like 20 years later folks.

The future is here and I have already seen it.

Are we so dumb as to accept arcade game products made soley to maintain a corperation such as EA in income that only hints at what war can be like?

      Even worse:

How is it possible to dupe 30,000 gamers over the course of one whole year to choke down a bad patch after patch hoping for the next good patch while ROME burns?

Or worse make it so that only a select few can download on the net and cut out retailers, cd-burners, printers and associated marketing. All of that for 9 whole dollars? I suspect the only expense is tech support, bandwidth and anti acid pills for those unfortunate few who find themselves with a product that does NOT work.

I suspect in the Powers that Be 2142 matters. That is what will feed them and thier familys not some old wore out game like BF2 no sir.

I for one will not buy 2142, and am getting that first lifeboat off the great ship EA. That is one titanic I dont wish to ride to the bottom of the sea.

I love BF2 very much and that is why I write this stuff.

Face it. We have all paid for BF2142's beta test (albeit with a modern day skin) for the past 11 months. Now that EA knows what to fix, go ahead and let them make 2142... so it can collect dust on the store shelves.

You are dead on. I noted a few weeks ago when the game was supposed to be released, before the delay.

It seems like every article that I come across on gaming magazine websites says the same thing, there is nothing revolutionary, only evolutionary.

There is nothing technically stunny about BF2. It is pretty, but there is nothing jaw dropping about it when you start looking at the eyecandy or performance of other games that came out a year or two before BF2 was released. Look at Farcry, look at HL2, hell, look at Halo which was in production for 6 years.

You are right, older gamers are really hungery now for something bigger/broader. The technology is there for more emersion, but nobody can take us there, why?! We have the hardware, and now, with 64bit OS, we have the software. There is so much potential. The hardware and OS are far beyond were the game technology is at.

Gamers, true gamers, are always willing to upgrade something to meet the demand of a game techonology. Why not build for 64bit? I know you can say, because their is not a demand, or because people are on using it (chick-egg principle). But, with 64 registers, dual cores? WTF! My machine could crack NSA codes *exagration* But really, WTF!

I hope that EA/DiCE has some big, and I mean really BIG ideas for BF3. And not just say, lets get it out the door and start making money like they did with BF2. If they take their time, and do it right, they can get us hooked like people got hooked with the Sims or WoW. If it is big and epic, we will be on board for years and years with the same game.

But, I have to expect some smaller gaming house to make something epic, because EA does not take risks.

**I too love BF2 very much and that is why I write this stuff**

I think its got everything to do with EA and not alot with DICE to be honest. Its like Newspapers.
I have had co-workers that worked in the gaming industry. The stories I have heard about how EA opperates is sickening. Totally wicked. They are a copy that will only release a game if it is a top 5 seller. So, all the many smaller gaming shops they own will work for years on a game, sink lots of money into the development, only to tell them that EA is not going to release the game because the forsee it not to be a "blockbuster". I am sure DiCE would like to support us more, but the purse is not in their hands as much as it was in the past.

I could be wrong, because I have seen DiCE do some quirky things. It is sad, because if DiCE makes BF3, EA might shelf it (unlikely though). *sigh* I almost wept when I heard EA was taking over DiCE.

Well, I guess we have to just expect that DiCE will never grow up to be another Id, Blizzard, or Valve. Hell, Microsoft might do better then EA! And don't even get me talking about Sony.

I agree, computer are far supased the game technology. With Physix cards coming in, Duel core, 64-bit etc etc, Games should be so much better but were not seeing it.

Quake Wars looks good, but again, not revolutionary. I know where my money is going in november, Nintendo Wii, F**K sony with all there technology just to glamour things up. I want something revolutionary, and thats nintendo!!! Period. And they care about there customers alot more and have passion for what they do. How many good games have nintendo made in the past. Even sega had quality games but have been killed off by the likes of big corparations looking for big money.

Yes i know. I had a little drink last night lol Sorry about that but airing my opinions about an earlier comment saying were sick of evolutionary games. And more revolutionary games are needed :)

                  Sorry about that.

Back on topic, EA/DICE probably wont release another major patch. I reckon you'll be lucky see a hotfix patch infact. Time will tell though. As some1 said earlier, were beta testers for 2142 now

I totally agree with everything said.. We just jumped on the BF2 boat (would of done it sooner, price of ranked servers at the time wayy too expensive) it's very very hard for a new comer even with a 1k+ community to get it going.. I hope we see a hotfix soon, or a rollback.. 1.22 played fine for me :)

I can't believe it, a sensible thread, with good intelligent discussion, and nobody has come in here flaming we're anti-EA whiners! Amazing. Every thread I post in, trying to make my points about why this game needs better support, there's always some guys that are steadfast EA fans that refuse to listen to anything I've typed. It is really nice to see this thread hasn't been spoilt.

I totally agree with the letter Craig wrote, lets just hope it has some effect (call me a pessimist but I doubt it will, unfortunately).

Maybe because we all love the game enough not to flame but to ask. You get more with sugar that salt. I am disappointed to say the least, we have seen through other software houses what good community serivce is like. The is an expectation level set by them that we would expect.

Very nice letter, I agree with 99% of what was in it.

One of the question it brings tough, why ? And for me , the answer is pretty clear. There (EA/DICE) agenda was realy to : First make things difficult for modders, while having the excuse of fixing a "major issue" (squad jumping: wich is IMHO a question of opinion, and should have been left as a server option) in order to push there addon sales in early summer. After this, I think that all ressources will be put to finish BF2142.

So lets resume: EA/DICE for me are dedicated to make a max profit on this engine. 8 months ago: Main title, 5 months: Special force, 2 months: EuroForces, Now: Armored Fury.... Its clear: EA/DICE dont wantthe mods to compete with there sales. And saddly, I think that there most of the patches didnt had for main purpose ... aftersale service, or customers support...

I sure hope that everyone will remember this when falls come.

Sorry for bad english, sure hope its still understandable. This post being from an EX-BF2Addict.

                                Update from StrafeRight:

In hopes of helping keep the servers clean of what mess we all knows lurks out there we are now streaming the master PunkBuster banlist to both of our servers every five minutes... as well we are taking screen shots of all clients who are connected to the server every five minutes for review by admins in any alleged 'hacking' complaints we receive.

If you've been banned by PunkBuster servers that are also reporting to the master list, you will not be able to connect. Also, if you're using hacks (no walls, commander hacks, ect) and they show up on your screen, we're going to see exactly what it is you see on your screen. And we will act accordingly. There is no coming back from this type of ban. Period.

So if you suspect anyone of hacking on our servers please do us a big favor and either:

                                1. Join our public, free ventrilo @ IP: rage.typefrag.com Port: 13499 and let an admin know so we can check the PB screenshots...or,

                                2. Make a post in our forums under the 'Admin Assitance' forums for BF2...or,

                                3. Send an email to craig @ straferight dot com with the name of the person you suspect, the time they were playing and on which of our servers so we can check the screenshot folder. You can also reach me at AIM: straferight, ICQ: 65803090 or Xfire: craig1974

I also invite all of you to use our Public Vent whenever you are playing on our servers. We have many open rooms, and will create private ones for you if you would like (just ask an admin) to enjoy our servers privately with your friends.

I would also ike to say thank you to everyone who's been so supportive in this thread. We are working very hard to hunt down the 'corrupted install' clients that are, unknowingly, join-crashing our servers. It's apparent that EA is aware and is working on a fix for this server patch. We apologize for any inconveniences you may experience while playing on our servers.
