I still want to be able to cave skulls in with my wrench!!
I have already emailed EA on this matter, since i am now an expert i insisted and demanded that i should now have a gold wrench capable of skull bashing.....i've earned it !
A prime example of using mines right was the other night, I was playing Sharqi, and the ramp up to the TV station, I layed a line of mines at the top of the ramp where any traffic coming up it would be hard pressed to see them.
Seconds later, a Vodnik comes belting up like an Italian driver on crack, best of all, it had a crew of three, so three kills with one mine...
Engineer, Support and Sniper are my most played classes. The only critisicm I have of Engineer is that the repair points system is a bit erratic.

The notion that "only noobs run over mines" is ridiculous. I suppose only noobs get killed by claymores too?
It's all about placement. If you put this big long string of 5 mines in an obvious place, yeah not many people are going to run over it. But if you are smart about how and where you place your mines, you will constantly catch people with them... "noob" or otherwise.
Some good points were made in this thread in support of engy as a viable class.
When taking a flag all combat is CQC. Shotty owns at close combat.
Take a flag, lay down some mines in unuspecting locations then off to the next flag! When you do kill a person in this way don't forget the +1 flag defense points.
Mines can be used offensively and laid ontop of vehicals. Mines also do not have to kill an opponent to help. When that armor has to roll up and worry about 3 mines and that special ops and AT guy you are helping to divide his attention.
Holing up in a house and covering the doors with a shotty is a pretty effective way to take a flag.
I think there is a reason Engy's have a short range shotgun. You are a vehicle class. Even if it's a buggy. Let the vehicle take you to the action and bring your CQC shotty to bare against the enemy.
I'm not an Engy freak. I'm a BF2 freak. I like to play the classes as they are needed. If you convince yourself that the engy class is weak, you are limiting your usefulness in the battlefield and denying yourself a powerful weapon vs. the enemy.

Excelent summary post. I think our work here is done.
Engineer, man its the best ever with that shotgun on karkand. PREIOD.
I agree on soldier! Engr. is indeed important at all maps when in a vehicle. It would be hard to neutralized by infantry 2 armors side by side with engr. kits. In Karkand, MEC engr. because of the power and rapid firing of the shot gun. With mines in my hand, a lot of armor falls prey to my sneaky attack laying mines on the rear of their vehicle (armors in karkand also on stationary with very tight space for manuevering) with about 80% success rate.
Support kit is also effective but only for Karkand, for me. Because of unlimited supplies, raining grenades is the business of the day!
Sniper is also effective in Karkand. CLaimore on corners and grenades, though limited, is effective especially at hotel area and the next the CP. Sniper rifle is effective too at long range, lots of hits in Karkand.
If anybody has a problem of support, sniper and engr. kits at Karkand then its not the kit dude, its how you use it- you're just not good enough!
I'll tell you this, the class is practically essential on the Great Wall map in EF. If one side is inside the wall and mines both vehicle entrances, you have to have one of your own engi's disable mines, or you'll never get your vehicles inside the wall. It's kinda funny when it happens.

it should be said "anyone can accidentally run over mines, but only noobs punish" as simple as that, because its what it is.
That spanner is invaluable to keeping your tank moving. sometimes you'll survive a tank battle with 2 bars of health left, in wich case getting out of your tank and quickly fixing it can stop it from exploding. Just being able to fix your vehicle is such a benefit to anyone who wants to survive that I would say the engineer class is great for what it's meant to do.

Tell that to the lucky basterd engineer who mined me inside the flag radius of Hotel at karkand the other day as I jammed against the wall with a full load of troops yelling "BAIL OUT!"
And another thing that makes the engi class worth it: Sneak up on a tank, and lay mines at it's tracks, then start hammering e. Driver gets out, you get in, you drive away
This is the kind of sentiment towards the engineer that I love. Why doesn't anyone that thinks the engineer is worthless come to Insomnia's 24/7 Wake server? I, no kidding, get a minimum of 40 points in a full round if not upwards to 70 and even a record of 86... all this as engineer. I've gotten golds, silvers, and bronzes numerous times as an engineer. And NO I'm not driving a tank or piloting. This is all strictly ground maneuvering. Granted, Wake Island is a great place for me, but I've done just as well on all other maps.
Engineer in many hands IS useless, but, personally, I will rack up the points as an engineer. If EA/Dice were to do anything more for the engineer you couldn't stop me

My personal favourite tactic is to mine the ramps near Hotel in Sharki. You get to kill the people in the boats who ramp them up onto the land. Nothing is as funny as seeing a boat load of people get [AT MINE] by their names.
Seriously though, if they game the basic engineer shotgun the ability to interupt the reload animation, or the ability to work the pump a fraction faster, or God forbid BOTH, then you'd see some serious engineer whoring.
The shotgun is lethal in close ranges. It's the kit I play almost exclusively on Karkand, and I don't drive vehicles.
