I played engineer a lot and I enjoyed very much and scored quite well with it. I got my expert engineer badge before any other because it is easy. The jackhammer shotgun is the best close quarter weapon in BF2 because it damage and accuracy is good and you don't have to prone to get good accuracy. Engineer can run as fast as sniper/medic. So engineer is very much like a one man army when I am playing it.

I know there is alot of support for Engy already by the end of this thread. But for the rest of you, and in fact those of you who think it great just for armor whoring, the Engy is a great class! it's not because of armor whoring either. That's almost like saying it's good as a chopper whore because you can land and repair. Wow. Great. You're another whore noone likes.

Engy is great simply because of mines. If you didn't have mines, then I would agree that it's worthless. Sure you would still be able to repair but like that one doorknob said, it's slow.

When I was big into it (my most played class is Engy) I would score atleast the top 5 every round, and most of the time be 1st place (or 2nd because commander gets double score for me winning the round). Just lay some mines down to defend a flag, and drive off in a buggy. Those things are fast compared to anythign else. Just dodge aircraft if they come around (it's difficult though), just dodge tank if you see one. Drive up to friendly tanks/APCs and repair them from behind (don't make a joke) while they blow up the enemy. Hurry and help teammates capture a flag then throw a mine or 2 down and drive off as fast as you can b4 arty or a bomber.

Shotgun is awesome of course. Everyone gets p|$ed when they die from one shot. Pistol just turns you into a sniper. I can't count how many times I've actually shot sniper's from far away. They get p!s*ed to. It's great! Grenades are also effective when you know how to use them, of course.
