Portal 2 "Panels" Trailer, Now With 100% More Cave Johnson

Beginning today and running every week until the release of Portal 2, Valve will deliver new videos in an exciting new series.

The first video, Panels, starts things off proper with a lovely 1080p look at, well, panels and their use. Oh hey, what's up Cave Johnson!

Portal 2 ships for the PS3, PC, Xbox 360, and Mac on April 19th!

I wonder if this is their way of bridging the gap between Portal 1 and 2?

Anyways, I must applaud VALVe for turning down advertising agencies in favor of doing it themselves. I imagine those professional agencies are too generic and universal to understand VALVe's needs. What are those needs? I'm guessing (very poorly) the advertisements are required to be functional on top of its standard need to be attractive/entertaining. Functional involves showcasing the product itself (in-game technology) so we know what the bloody hell we're buying, and acting as a tutorial as nobody "rtfm." In this case, ads replace the instructional manual, because we would've already familiarized ourselves with the game's environment before even buying it. There may even be a small psychological perception that VALVe is not "selling out" by doing it themselves as a bonus, though I believe that wasn't their intention whatsoever (I mean, they would likely turn to an agency that actually specialized in games; I know I would outsource in their place).

"That is not a panel... that is a crusher.

      ...

      We sell them too."

      Epic. :)
