Newell on Episode 3, Counter-Strike 2, and More

Gabe Newell took a few moments to answer some fan questions during tonight's episode of GameTrailers TV.

The status of Half-Life 2: Episode 3 was the first question asked. Revealing absolutely nothing, Newell states that there is "nothing to say on Episode 3 right now." When pressed on the matter, he did say that something was in the works, with a very remote possibility that Episode 3 may turn into a full-fledged sequel to Half-Life 2. This is mere speculation based on what was said during the interview.

As expected, the only thing confirmed about Counter-Strike 2 is that there is no Counter-Strike 2. However, Newell says that an e-mail to him with an "ordered list" of what sequels you want most may sway them. He personally would like to see a Portal 2 before a Counter-Strike 2. This also seems to indicate that a Portal 2 is also not in development yet.

Valve is also very interested in Project Natal for the Xbox 360 (and other motion based control schemes) and the possibilities created with that new technology. He also apologized to PlayStation 3 owners who have gotten the short end of the stick when it has come to the Orange Box support.

We will have the GameTrailers TV episode up once it's available from GameTrailers.com.

I ended up watching several House M.D. re-runs from various different seasons during the GameTrailers TV broadcast... Looks like I didn't miss much, but then again, everyone was using cautious optimism so it's not entirely a huge disappointment. But then again, we all laughed when Left 4 Dead 2 was rumored to be announced so soon... I guess we did hope for another surprise to blindside us. Apparently it didn't happen...

God i want to punch Gabe, he is so cool and calm.. nothing to say about episode 3 my ass.. wtf!

I think they dont want to release a title (episode 3) alone now after the orange box, they just dont have enough content i guess.
Thats why I got upset about left 4 dead 2, cuz that game seems already done and underway while there is nothing going on for other titles, there is nothing else coming it seems. CS 2 & Portal 2 are probably still on the drawing table, and whatever they got on Episode 3 they want keep locked up till they have other mature titles to announce with.

News of a Counter-Strike 2 made me very nervous. I am a HUGE fan of Counter-Strike, as it is... I feel changing Counter-Strike is a very bad move, lets look what has happened, Counter-Strike Condition Zero didn't go over very well and that was a changed Counter-Strike. Adding the riot shield into CS also did not go over well at all and that was also a change to CS... Source was in my opinion a successful update to Counter-Strike keeping all the essential components into an updated very functional and widely accepted engine. Following this with the next official installment of Counter-Strike is something I look forward to, not a Counter-Strike 2. I hope that I am not alone on this one. Keep CS the same! Use all these loved elements with a new engine!
