We were hacked. Several times over the past two weeks, in fact.
While all passwords are encrypted and salted, it's recommended that you change your password here when you can.
tbh the server owners should get some recompense for the advertisements. I mean the server they pay for, and personally maintain and run, is forced to make money for someone else (see slavery, it's a similar concept).
It's like saying, "All users of windows will now have advertisements replace their desktop and explorer backgrounds. This is mandatory, and we will forcefully instigate this change."
It's already possible to put ads into CS. Since the ads are likely to be in the same locations, just put your ads over the Valve ads. That solves the "we're getting cheated to make money for Valve" argument.

I strongly doubt Valve would allow the system to be bypassed so easily considering the amount of money / contract agreements from the advertiser they would make :)

They'd have to block servers from putting their own sprites into maps then somehow. You can put your own sprites into maps if you're the server admin. Blocking Valve's ad is just a matter of knowing the location of the ad, and putting the sprite in front of it.

Good point. Guess we'll only know if it's possible when it actually gets released :)
Bug report: There appear to be banner ads plastered all over the maps and my scoreboard in this beta. You may want to fix this.
edit: also, I hope there are clean versions of the maps so that all we have to deal with is scoreboard/gui ads. At least that won't fuck up movie making and shit like that.

There's a difference between the gamehelper ads and these 'installed' ads. The gamehelper ads were made by the map maker to fit in with the map and are almost completely ignorable.
You walk up to the average newbie that doesn't know how to play any map EXCEPT dust and dust2, and talk about gamehelper ads, and he'll be like...what are you talking about? And if you point them out, he'll say oh, THOSE, I just ignore them.
The point to these new ads of Valve's is to NOT be ignored. Take CT spawn for example. Every single round you will spawn staring straight at that thing and it's MUCH MUCH BIGGER than any player's spray.
I also think any ads to come will stand out MORE. Remember those annoying banner ads that flashed in the kind of colors that are designed to make you have a seizure? Advertisements are meant to be noticed, period.
I think 'unobtrusive' went out the window at about the same time that '$$' started coming in. "Sorry everyone, I know we promised the ads would be unobtrusive, but we make more money when they aren't, I'm sure you understand, it's only business sense."
Unlike others, I agree with Zips that it is possible that these are only beta forms and ads to come will be less obtrusive...
...but it ain't bloody likely. Given every indication so far, we'll be treated to ads that are bright blue, or yellow, or stand out as much as possible. I'm sure if they could put animated ads in there, they would. With sound.
I seriously think this is going to go down as one of the biggest failures in video game history. Taking the biggest game on the internet, and shoving ads into it after people have already paid for it years ago. Can you imagine the media that would cause when the biggest game on the internet crashes and never recovers, from all the people finally moving on to other games instead?
Part of me can't wait for these ads so when people stop playing CS in droves, I can point and laugh at Valve. Oh, people will still play of course, and some will move to CS:S until it gets ads too. Honestly it depends on how avoidable the ads are. If they can be avoided simply by not playing official maps, they will be.
I suppose I should thank them. I've been trying to get people to stop playing dust and dust2 95% of the time and learn to like other maps. Now it'll happen. =P
