Zips wrote..I'm not stupid zips, and your right you cant say how the finals will look after the beta, but do you really think they are going to change much? all there doing now is making sure everyone who plays cs 1.6 can see these ads with out the game crashing. and maybe add a couple subway ads.

Hey Zips, when the final ads are the same or even more annoying than before, and all of us are pissed off at the blatant exploitation of the very people that BUY THEIR GAMES, are you still going to kiss Valve's ass in every post you make?

Sorry, being reasonable in my postings doesn't make me an ass kisser. I'm just not so blind as to make blanket assumptions when there is nothing to back up the claim...

I like the "wait and see" method, not the "I haven't seen the final product, BUT OMG IT SUX!" method.

AHAHAH Nice Beta, Looks like some Retard took 32 seconds to make a spray was behind this add masterpiece.
I would not mind the adds if they fit. But this is truly sad, a friggin spray... wow that took 5 weeks to make...
Oh and I hope this is pre pre Alpha testing, like they just got home from 8 hours of drinking and decided to make these adds up.

From the BETAs I've seen from Valve lately (like DWP in CSS) it was pretty close to it's final release version. Anywhere from 1 week to 1 month at the most.
Now due to the horrible intrusiveness of these ads it could affect competitive play severely for CS as they create a major contrast and can affect gameplay due to this, potentially causing unfair advantages depending on team/location...There are 3 reasons I know of most people continue to play CS 1.6 regularly: they don't like CSS, they are competitors, or their machines can't handle css.
While the gameplay changes have been just little enough before to keep people coming back anyway in the past, this one may cause it to be too much and valve could be shooting themselves in the foot for putting these into their highest player minute game, because it may become one of their lowest.
non-obtrusive ads would be much better recieved by the community...hell even audio based ads and even subliminal messaging would be better accepted! (hearing pepsi every time you fire that awp in a very faint quick whisper, lol)

Also, another point. These ads must be hosted on a server of some sort. And depending on which it is you can just block its source if there is no client/server side command.
Also, the files must be stored in a temp file. Just make a blank file, which the temp ad's are saved into.. and make that read only.. no more ads, just a blank texture (perhaps make the texture transparent).
So here is 3 possible ways of getting past it.
1 Copy existing maps and rename them.
2 Block its source (but would most likely be a valve content server)
3 Make the temp file it stores into read only
Only reason I see 3 as viable is the fact it would be a pain in the arse to program (well not really, but still annoying) the game to read a random file name which it was stored temporally into.
Also random files could build up overtime taking up harddrive space
And they would probably like to cycle ads so having a single file name its stored into would ease the swapping in a new ad and out an old.
I am sure it wont be too hard to bypass.

Except, I didn't make that threat about 1.4, 1.5, or 1.6. I could care less about the changes in those, and in general thought most of them were for the better. (Even the shield, which I kinda liked with the sole exception of it being available only to one team; that was stupid.)
Sounds like what people said when 1.6 was released..
..and 1.5
..and 1.4
But you sure do make a convincing threat!

Exactly. It seems fairly obvious to me that the whole purpose of this Beta is to test functionality, not form. The ads in the beta are incredibly simple and very cheap looking - I highly doubt they were created for any other reason than to test the functionality of ingame advertising and to provide users with the most basic idea of how this will all work.
Ahem... maybe I should bold, italic, underline, and make the word BETA flash. Because there's no real saying how the non-BETA (final) ads will look just yet.
People need to stop freaking out and jumping to conclusions.Zips wrote..
Hehe, no problem! I would have IM'd you about it but I can't get my AIM working for whatever stupid reason.
Hm, this news was apparently submitted by tonjohn before I got it up here. Thanks tonjohn, didn't see you submitted it until now though.skankuser wrote..

Zips probably hates Valve more than any person in this thread. When you work behind the scenes for awhile, your opinion of companies tends to change.
Just because Zips is level-headed and not throwing a temper-tantrum like a 2 year old does not make him a Valve ass kisser.
Grow up mate.

Are you implying that there is another counter strike people play?
People still play CS 1.6?
OH WAIT that thing, counter-strike:nub? (or was it source?) yeah, that one, with usually 1/4 of the people that play 1.6.
sometimes I see source players at 60,000!!!!!
too bad it's not uncommon to see the 1.6 player count at 160,000

There is where I think you're wrong. I think the ads there are place holders for other ads to come later. I think right now what they're 'beta testing' is that they appear in all resolutions, with all graphics settings, etc. In short, that there's no way to disable them, even by accident, except of course hacking, and they're probably going to try to prevent that as much as possible too, of course.

What I think we can expect is the ads are going to be in those exact spots taking up those exact spaces and be exactly that common to see, including the scoreboard ad, which you will see no matter what map you play on.

Zips, you're right: this is still Beta. Perhaps that's not what the released version will be. I'm not naive enough to believe it won't be close, but just for the sake of argument, I'll play along. What are Beta tests for, other than to seek opinion, gauge reaction, gather market response?
Sorry, but it doesn't look like many people around here like them. The most positive remark I've heard yet is "at some point you'll ignore them reflexively and they'll be background clutter to you." Somehow I don't think Valve really wants a target audience for this gimmick that runs the gamut between "I hate them, and you by association" to "I just won't pay attention to them". Nothing like alienating gaming customers to the point that they're more likely to boycott the products being displayed than to actually buy them.
If they proceed with advertisements at this point, I have nothing left to conclude but that their Beta test wasn't for the purpose of seeking community input, but an advertising medium demonstration for marketing departments.
Do you disagree, Zips?

You're way off. The point of a Beta test is to see if it WORKS and to make sure there aren't any weird bugs.

You don't come here often, do you?

And so the BS is about to begin. I already hated the ad idea to begin with, but these actually look worse than what I thought they would be.

Why would you have this retarded shit up here if it was not open for discussion on the CURRENT pictures?
For all of you who did not know, this site USED to be about the community of 1.6, now it is run by a VALVE fanboy who gets his jollies from ramming Gordon Fucking Freemans crowbar up his ass because valve said it was good for gameplay.
