CS 1.6 Ads in the Testing Stages

There are some new developments on the Counter-Strike 1.6 advertisements. Starting yesterday, there is a new CS BETA out and about that you can opt into to get the jump on viewing advertisements in your game of CS 1.6.

To run this beta version you will need to add -beta cs to your command line when you start Steam. This can be done by opening up the Windows shortcut you use to launch Steam and adding -beta cs right after Steam.exe. Please report any bugs or issue you find in this article.

Currently, there is a bug where ads aren't rendering in certain rendering modes, among other minor issues that are being worked on. There are a couple of screenshots already out there that show the placeholder ads. The BETA period will feature ads only for Steam related games. Once the BETA period is over, the ads will presumably not be optional, and will feature advertisements for non-Valve related products. Here is a sample screenshot from SK Gaming.

You can bet that more screenshots will be linked to starting on page 19 of a Steampowered forum discussion. NOTE: These are only placeholder ads. The real ads may very well come off as being much less obtrusive.

Hmm that really doesn't fit in as well as hoped, it just looks like a massive decal. I'd prefer they build them into billboard frames, or on the side of trains so they at least pretend to "live" in the cs world, rather than an out of place pop-up feel. Product placement like vending machines or the computers (i.e. Dell, like the ones in cs_office) would integrate even better.

Everyone will get used to them just as they have with BF2142. I just hope Valve doesn't bring these to any Source games anytime soon.

I don't know of any possible backlash that would make valve think twice before they sacrifice gamer enjoyment.
