    New CS Weapon Pricing - The CS Market

    This one is coming as a bit of a shock to me. Valve has just unveiled the Counter-Strike: Source Market to the masses. Trippy, isn't it?

    The algorithm explanation page goes into great detail about how each weapon's dynamically changing price is figured out.
    Gather player purchase data. Each week, the total number of weapons purchased world-wide since the previous week's change is counted. The purchase data is gathered directly from game servers. Every 24 hours, game servers upload a file to Steam listing the quantities of all items purchased over the course of the previous day.

    Slice up the Money Pie. The new price for each weapon is based on the total amount of money spent on that weapon. The percentage of money spent on each weapon during the week is used to determine the percentage by which its price moves the next week. So if 10% of all dollars world-wide are spent on the Maverick M4A1 Carbine, then its price will increase by 10%.
    That's just a small piece of the entire algorithm. Let's take the M4 as an example.

    Current price: $3,100

    Projected price: $3,390

    According to the math, this is a 9.35% increase from its current price. This projected increase is based on the fact that 9.35% of the total world-wide spending in servers is spent on M4's. Confused? It's going to be mighty interesting to see how this plays out.

          So..the economy part of the game will change every week? Hm.

          Not too bad for us regular folk, but I'm sure it'll be a bitch for clans and tourneys.

                    That doesn't make sense... if the price increases by the percentage of dollars which are spent on it, then the prices would always go up. Probably less than 1% of the dollars are spent on the dualies, but the price is still going to go up because thats greater than zero.

                    But then, they say that they sort the list and the top half go up, and the bottom half go down. This is contradictory, because then they can't use the percentage directly. They are probably going to have to use some algorithm where the price is modified for weapon X by:

                    {

                    Percentage of money spent on X

                    MINUS

                    Median percentage of money spent

                    }

                    By this logic, if 10% of the people buy M4's, and 1% of the people buy elites, then the M4 would go up by about 5%, and the elites DOWN by about 4%.

                    So the prices won't change as much as they seem to suggest. Fix your news posts, csnation and valve.

                          If you go to the steam forums you deserve to be tortured with the whining of little emo kids.

                          These changes are interesting, but I wonder how they'll actually affect gameplay.
