I have a feeling Half-Life 2 is only a conspiracy to make money through online retailers (Amazon..) which allow you to pre-order the game in return for a deposit..

Hah, that whole HL2 Leak was probably set-up by Valve themselves..

I strongly disagree that HL2 will sell more units.
Half-Life and particularly Counter-Strike have broken into the mainstream much more than any id software title ever has. id is no lightweight, but basically HL2 will have a huge online community and Doom 3 won't. That will matter over time. Doom 3 might have great sales this year, but HL2 will have great sales for a long time unless Valve drops the ball completely.
You must remember that iD has been the the business FAR longer and iD didn't hire some outside European company to create it's engine.
Source was created in-house by Valve Software, dude.
Not to mention, Doom3 can do everything HL2 can do physics wise, but allows for lower spec'ed computers.
        Neither game is released yet.
CS is the only thing that will allow HL2 to sell, and unless they offer a netcode that actually works and hitboxes that are properly located, most people could care less about HL2, because you're basically buying a game that you already own.
Most people are fine with HL's netcode which is why it's the biggest online game around. You have to understand that far more casual players are buying games than people like you or I.
I know most people aren't going to want to spend $50 just to upgrade CS and then spend another $50 just for CS2.
It doesn't matter. There are so many people who love CS and the HL brands that even a small portion of them buying HL2 will account for a lot of sales.
Finally... at least iD software never even attempted to give a release date. Cormack always said the game would be released when its done, unlike VALVe who continues to keep giving release dates and have yet to fulfill them.
Yeah, but that has nothing to do with game sales. Who really cares about release dates once a game has actually been released?
Heck, thats not taking into consideration of the other games being released this year such as WoW, Linear2, UT2K4, EQ2, and more... even though only 1 of them is FPS, those other 3 can rob you blind of your players in an instance.
Warcraft 3, Diablo 2, Unreal Tournament, Unreal II, Unreal Tournament 2003, Quake 3 and god knows how many EverQuest expansions were released during Half-Life's lifetime.

You seriously underestimate the business here. This is not a market driven by fanboys and what-not. Half-Life 2 is a huge name game because its prequel is still insanely popular. For you to assume that all HL gamers will migrate to other games instead of supporting the francise is against common sense.

There would have to be a reason for this besides a pushed back release date. Gamers would have to lose all faith in Valve's games, not just their ability to predict release dates.
HL2 will be a flop, plain and simple.
HL2 was probably among the most hyped games of last year. That hype just isn't going to disappear.

If you weren't anticipating Half-Life 2 then I seriously doubt you'd even care about the game's release.

Failure, Koorpan. Valve NEVER announced an April release date. That was speculation by Vivendi Universal. You should really change that in your news post; it's inaccurate.
I've edited his post. Sorry for the mix-up.

this was also on PHL yesterday. half-life two is going to suck, or i'll be losing quite a few testicles to bets this summer.

They should follow the doom3 release date style: "When it's done."

I hope it's not going to be another hoax....

vampire bloodlines (the 1st non valveish game with source engine) is coming out this fall. hl2 must be out before that, so summer looks fine.

The only reason Valve puts out these release dates is so that people like us can argue and make jokes about them. Everyone "hates Valve" everytime CS and HL are delayed but only until they are actually released. Then Valve and them are best friends, again. The cycle continues.

rizzuh, i dunno about you...but im suffering a bit from unreal tournament fatigue....make that unreal fatigue in general - just how many games which are basically the same do epic want to release?

as for the other games mentioned - none of them approach the popularity of HL - it said on one of my later suk's of HL (the dvd case one) 'over 12 million copies sold world wide' - that beats most console games into submissions for gawds sakes.

Everyone in here that says they hate Valve, then you should stop playing all/any of their games right now. Remember, without Valve, Counter-Strike would be a really crappy game in my opinion. Valve has done so many things for us gamers; you need to remember that. Without Valve, CS-Nation would probably not be here. Think about it. Just give Valve some time. They are working on numerous things and probably have a couple surprises for us.
