The only reason HL2 had a chance against Doom3 was the release date and now Doom3 has the closest one.

so when exactly is Doom 3 coming out... It's a race! At least id has had some games come out in the last 2 years, but VALVE so far is only having CZ come out.

There are other factors that will result in HL2 selling more than Doom 3, no matter what. Even if HL2 is a horrible game and Doom 3 is the best of the century, HL2 will likely be the focus of most mod-making efforts over the next few years.



There's also Counter-Strike, which was being ported to Source at the time of the big HL2 leak.



I'm betting HL2 will definitely ship more units than Doom 3. Nothing against id, but Half-Life is a huge property right now. HL2's sales could only possibly go up the more it is pushed closer to the holiday season.

I strongly disagree that HL2 will sell more units. You must remember that iD has been the the business FAR longer and iD didn't hire some outside European company to create it's engine. Meaning iD will most likely have better understanding of everything their engine can do and can easily relay that info to mod makers. iD knows that the key to selling the game is going to be who makes it the easiest to mod.



Not to mention, Doom3 can do everything HL2 can do physics wise, but allows for lower spec'ed computers. As we have seen lately, VALVe has managed to take a game that ran off a 266mhz and change it ever so slightly that it's almost impossible to run it off a 1ghz.



CS is the only thing that will allow HL2 to sell, and unless they offer a netcode that actually works and hitboxes that are properly located, most people could care less about HL2, because you're basically buying a game that you already own. I know most people aren't going to want to spend $50 just to upgrade CS and then spend another $50 just for CS2.



Finally... at least iD software never even attempted to give a release date. Cormack always said the game would be released when its done, unlike VALVe who continues to keep giving release dates and have yet to fulfill them. Heck, thats not taking into consideration of the other games being released this year such as WoW, Linear2, UT2K4, EQ2, and more... even though only 1 of them is FPS, those other 3 can rob you blind of your players in an instance. HL2 will be a flop, plain and simple.

Failure, Koorpan. Valve NEVER announced an April release date. That was speculation by Vivendi Universal. You should really change that in your news post; it's inaccurate.
