lopinboy wrote..1. HL isnt using the quake engine, its using the HL engine. anything to do with quake is embedded in HL and gone. thats it, its the HL engine now. only very few portions of quake1/2 were licensed from ID. namely things like skybox system, sound/file caching (PAK/WAD files), coloured ligthing (quake2), in game models (MDL) + others i cant be bothered to remember. i dont think ID can legally do anything more. they cahrged valve for portions of q1/2 code, thats it.
1. Note that VALVe only modified the Quake1/2 engines a bit, not very much. Also, they can not legally force all mods to become their property. Thats like saying if you created a music CD and burned it, its now the property of the CD manufactorer.
2. VALVe created 1 game.... it was only a decent game, nothing to rave about.
3. VALVe's going under and its just a matter of time before they release a statement. They've caused themselves way to many problems that could of been easily avoided.
And like i said, valve modified the EULA to include that every mod belongs to valve. look it up somewhere. it happened a long time ago. suspiciously around the time CS mods became very popular (AHL, CS, DOD, Firearms etc).
2. ok thats your opinion. can i ask when you played it? the single player HL i mean. i played it when it first came out, on a k6-550mhz with a TNT graphics card, around the time when hardware accelerated graphics were looked upon with sheer amazement, as i did while i played HL. nowadays of course it seems dated i agree. during its time (1998), HL wasnt just a "a decent game, nothing to rave about", it was very much something to rave about, nothing has ever been done like that before.
3. most ppl on these comment boards seem to have the knowledge of a business environment as if they are qualified for an MBA or something. even i havnt got that, yet.
valve are going the right way with steam. and something very very drastic has to happen for them to 'go under'. ie their offices being blown up. valve are not idiots, their game has stood the test of time.
