As much as I'd like to get PC games more instantly than we do now, the chances that Steam is going to matter in the long run seems very low.
1. As a bespoke e-commerce app, the kind a thousand dot-com-bombs tried to get running, its survival chances seem tiny. Only credit cards and paypal have survived. How could this be better than a webpage order form with a download link?
2. As a file downloader, I'm pretty sure downloading files has been done before, how is this different?
3. As a game distribution platform, who else would be allowed to use it? Why would you put your product along side competitors?
4. 'Steam runs in the background, downloading new content.' The chances a company is going to give you anything for free is nil, so why does it need to run all the time? Doesn't free-content make it an advertising channel?
5. Yay! Another chat client - alarm bells not ringing yet?
6. How the hell does it make the game play any better?!

The chatting capabilities are not like other chat programs out there because it lets you talk to your friends in game as well, which allows you to also find your friends much easier and find the games they are playing in. And as far not being groundbreaking and nobody liking it, completely false. Name another updating/delivery system that combines the aspects that steam does. And I love steam as well as many others. You are upset that you can't get it working but be patient because things are overloaded right now.

god stop complaining give them a couple of days or weeks to work out the kinks jesus. steam is such ownage. i mean if u took some time to look at some of the cool features.
i mean the friends feature is just amazing. and just hte fact that I can alt tab without losing sound makes everything worth it. I know have no use for hlsw or gametiger. Also cs looks a lot prettier now.
Aside from the weird big fonts and the invicibility of the shield, I'd say this version is pretty damn perfect. kudos to the valve guys for their hard work.
you guys can last a couple of days without playing 1.6. just play 1.5 for the time being if steam is giving u trouble.Comment

Hl2 may very well be the downfall of VALve. Sure hl2 is going to be the best fps ever but if you think realistically 90% of the home pc's out there won't be able to run it. so VALVe is putting all of its eggs in one basket with hl2. I'm afraid that if hl2 bombs then VALVe will be done for.Comment

It works perfectly fine for me, but have you looked at the steampowered.com forums? 100's of people can't get it to work (not because of the servers being overloaded) and Valve beta tested this program for months on end. Why do people want auto-updated programs? No one ever asked for a content deelivery system, i know most people here were happy with the old download and run method.
Just think, the HL2 release will be much more anticipated with many more people trying to use Steam, if Steam isn't flawless by then Valve is screwed. HL2 will be the ultimate test for Steam, paying customers need to get what they paid for fast. If Steam handles HL2 without a problem maybe i will start to think differently about it then but as of right now the program is waayy below standards.
You have been able to buy programs online and then download them for a while, they also come with auto-updaters a lot of the time, that sounds a lot like Steam's content delivery system. You have been able to find what servers your friends are in forever, All Seeing Eye, Serverspy.net, etc. Friends is the only sort of new thing that Steam has given us...Comment
