    Hi all,

seems like everybody and their grandma is posting so i thought i'll throw in a little something too.

This has just been posted on CS news sites across sweden. Is it true or is it just a dirty mind game from the "i'll never stop playing 1.5, never!" who were "omg 1.3 is the best! i'll never play 1.4/1.5 never!" ppl is to be investigated. al righty, here it comes, and feel free to bash me if it's been posted already:

(sry for the lenght of the article, didn't just wanna link it in case the site goes down)

    Valve Q&A | 14/09-03

    * Jack: Is 1.6 still a beta version? (oui|dMg)

    * Eric: Yes. 1.6 is still a beta version. We have been getting a lot of criticism due to the new implement into Steam 1.0. We are looking into these , and we will see what we can do to accomplish the final 1.6 version.

    * Jack: Can u get everyone W0N BACK? and 1.5 ... 1.6 is buggy (nohead-Lund)

    * Eric: As said, it's still a beta version and we will look into the criticism we have recieved.

    * Jack: why release it when it is a beta ? (aC`MuGGieS)

    * Eric: To recieve bugreports, and we have really got a lot of them. Betatesters of 1.5 leaked out the file and we didn't earn so much bugreports as we've been doing now. Thanks!

    * Jack: How much bandwith did the Steam-server(s) have available on the release of 1.6?

    * Eric: Our internet capacity dedicated to Steam Software for downloading Steam, CS 1.6 etc. is currently on 1GB. This capacity & hardware running Steamservers is extremely expensive and we have seen a lot of people putting up mirrors and thats very nice of you. Steam hardware will be updated tomorrow at afternoon.

    * Jack: why did cs 1.6 laggy so much for me and my friends ? (Anti-Steam|aLLe)

    * Eric: CS 1.6 have been downloaded for over 3 million times through Steam 1.0 since the 1.0 release. Guess how our servers took that..

    * Jack: why release something with so many bugs? and why did you decide to go with steam instead of using the good old fashion system? ([pmn`cls\007])

    * Eric: As CS 1.6 is still in betamode we can't promise it is bugfree.

We think Steam is a perfect thing to collect all games in one, buddylist, no more patching for new updates etcetera. We will wait and see when Steam will be bugfree and lagfree how the people respond.

    * Jack: The shield seem to be very unbalanced (compared to all the other weapons and such), will you address this (acording to me and many ive spoken to) issue? (eff)

    * Eric: We are looking into this issue yes. The riot shield will be more sensitive for bullets in the next release.

    * Jack: is it in any way possible that Valve might consider going back to cs 1.5 concerning the major opinion about its flawness, altho only 2 days or so have gone, many players fail to see 1.6 as something they will keep spending lots of time in and master (Joxer|anti16)

    * Eric: We cannot take back a version of something because people don't like it. We might consider keeping our WON servers up until we got a stable Steam & 1.6. But right now out servers & internet capacity is heavily overloaded.

    * Jack: why has the ping been encreased so much on the steam system? (dEYE^1-6-LORT)

    * Eric: Due to heavily overloaded servers. We will get more hardware and 2 more servers to download from.

    * Jack: Is there any known problems with CS-retail and steam? (Conartis)

    * Eric: 1.6 should work fine either you use MOD or RETAIL version of Counter-Strike.

    * Jack: Second question: Have you thought about making CS 1.6 more secure when talking about cheats etc. ? (Naz)

    * Eric: We are about to hire professional cheatcoders (no names) to keep VAC the most secure it can be from cheating.

    * Jack: When will the final release be out? (qTp`bop)

    * Eric: Final release is set to 22th October. We are working on it 24/7 and send your found bugreports to bug@valvesoftware.com, thanks.

    * Jack: Why is the steam so danm unstable, you cant log on ½ of the time (ee-avaGe)

    * Eric: As said, due to heavily overloaded servers. We are upgrading our hardware tomorrow afternoon, wait and see.

    * Jack: will there be ways to manually change the names of the weapons & the font and size of the text ingame. (Joxer|anti16)

    * Eric: Good question. Maybe to the final release.

    * Jack: When will the servers be updated to 1.6? (qTp`blubs)

    * Eric: Serverowners will have to update their servers by themself.

    * Jack: will it cost money to use steam in the future? (steam-fan|Benso)

    * Eric: No.

    * Jack: Will there be a new upgraded version of steam since the present one seems buggy? (oui|dMg)

    * Eric: Yes, of course as 1.6 is still a beta version. 1.6 final release is said to be released the 22th of October.

    * Jack: Do They have to get updated? as some server companies may not feel they wish to (qTp`blubs)

    * Eric: Thats up to them, in order to play 1.6 you need a 1.6 server.

    * Jack: Im curious about how big a influence thee counter-strike community actually have. How much do you listen to what we have to say/think about the game?

    * Eric: It happends very often that we visit Counter-Strike forums and follow up the discussions. If we can make improvement to the game, we will.

    * Jack: Im curious about how big a influence thee counter-strike community actually have. How much do you listen to what we have to say/think about the game?

    * Eric: It happends very often that we visit Counter-Strike forums and follow up the discussions. If we can make improvement to the game, we will.

    * Jack: What do u think off all the people who hates steam? Why "steam" when all people hate it? (Anden)

    * Eric: When it doesn't work, of course people hates it. As said, we will update our servers tomorrow afternoon.

    * Jack: What can you say about the fps drops? What are causing the fps drops? (daXiSM4ce\\hyx)

    * Eric: Often it is not your computer causing these fps drops. Due to heavily overloaded servers, information from Steam is sent to every CS server which causes lagged players and servers. As said, a new hardware update till appear tomorrow afternoon.

As much as I'd like to get PC games more instantly than we do now, the chances that Steam is going to matter in the long run seems very low.

        1. As a bespoke e-commerce app, the kind a thousand dot-com-bombs tried to get running, its survival chances seem tiny. Only credit cards and paypal have survived. How could this be better than a webpage order form with a download link?

        2. As a file downloader, I'm pretty sure downloading files has been done before, how is this different?

        3. As a game distribution platform, who else would be allowed to use it? Why would you put your product along side competitors?

        4. 'Steam runs in the background, downloading new content.' The chances a company is going to give you anything for free is nil, so why does it need to run all the time? Doesn't free-content make it an advertising channel?

        5. Yay! Another chat client - alarm bells not ringing yet?

        6. How the hell does it make the game play any better?!

I've had this problem throughout the entire time I was participating in the Steam beta as well. Generally for me, when it times out I just hit "OK" and then reconnect to the same server. Nine times out of ten I can connect the second try with no problems.

I don't think it has anything to do with your connection speed. If I had to guess the reason for the timeout is that your system takes too long to preload the map, textures, models, and whatnot to play that particular game. Basically, let it time out the first time, and then try again. If you're in the same boat as me, it should work after that.

I can't really complain; I'm running an AMD Duron 600, well below the minimum requirements for Steam.

Nope, check the new system requirements... they have changed.

I'm not so sure about that...it seems generally accepted in the software community that things are going to go this way eventually. Console developers in particular seem to be pretty excited about concepts just like this one.
The chances a company is going to give you anything for free is nil
You can't be serious. This is VALVe. They've been giving us free content for about FIVE YEARS now. I can't think of a single company that has been more supportive of their product than they have.

Will Steam work in the long run? Maybe not...but not because it's a bad idea. If anything, it just might be a little ahead of its time.

By jove, you're right! Huzzah, I make the cut!

Nonetheless, my suggestions for the timeout issues are the same. Just retry the same server right away.

whee got all my shit workin again. i now have cs dod HL opposing force (which i couldn't play before but now can with steam lol) ricochet deathmatch classic and TFC. i wonder when they are gonna make NS available for steam.

Hmm i wonder tho isn't this gonna stop the hundreds of custom mods that there are for HL. i mean i know most ppl don't play them but HL is popular because of the freedom that ppl have in making mods.

I think some people have already figured out a way to integrate MODS with Steam, but I'm betting that VALVe will find a way to make it easier in the future. They've always been very supportive of the MOD community, and I sincerely doubt that's going to stop now.

                          Steam - Error

Could not connect to Steam network.

Either the Steam nework is currently not running, or your internet connection is down.

Why do I get this message? Are the Steam servers down? I don't have a firewall, so that's not a problem. It won't log in at all...

Define "never." Since Steam went official, I've had to wait 5-10 minutes at times for it to actually respond, but it's almost always come through for me. If just waiting a hella long time doesn't work for you, I'd suggest restarting your system and trying again.

The Steam network is still up and running as near as I can tell. It could be a bandwidth problem, but again I'd try restarting my system and loading Steam before any other apps, just to see if that helped.

Ok here is something I would worry about, If we have to reload our system (or reinstall on another box) I hope we dont have to do this all over again downloading almost a gig! Is there any method for backing this stuff up? You used to be able to reload the os and leave half-life and everything untouched and be back in action once you put the cdkey in.
