Prepare for a long post.
HL and CS: After suffering forever trying the normal steaminstaller, I finally broke down and got the steaminstaller_cs from a torrent. After this, HL and CS had to 1 more minor update I believe, and then they worked perfectly. I like the new version of CS. The updated aztec, inferno, and cbble are nice. Hopefully we can see a trend down the line of some of the other older maps (specifically the ones that rely on the HL wad :\) get a nice face lift too. Both of the new rifles are decent, and the shield isn't so horrible now that the lastinv exploit has been fixed.
CS SKINS (capped for skimmers): I've gotten my player models/skins to work just my creating a models folder and dragging the player model folder into that. However, weapons I've not been so lucky on. As it is currently, if you try to use custom weapon models/skins, the game will get mostly through verifying resources and then drop you back out to the VGUI menu. Hopefully, this will be altered/fixed/corrected down the road.
DOD/TFC/Other Valve mods: I've only tried this with DOD but I'm guessing it would work with other Valve mods too. I copied everything from my counter-strike folder but the cstrike folder to a new day of defeat folder, and then grabbed my dod folder from my old HL install. Then, and heres the tricky part, I found a friend who had already finished getting the dod .gcf file, so I coaxed him into dcc'ing it to me over IRC. With all the pieces in place, I loaded up DoD, went to create a server, and it downloaded another update, but this one was a mere 15 minutes of downloading. After that, its run smooth as silk. Hope this helps some people.
Non-Valve related mods: I got quite annoyed when I told the original Steam install to convert my The Specialists over to Steam and it didn't. After sifting through millions of topics similar to these, I found some advice that worked (and if its from here, I'm sorry, but repeating can't hurt). To get a Non-Valve mod to work, merely copy the main mod folder from your old HL install, and paste it into your new Steam HL folder (specifically the HL one). Now the mod you transferred should be under the My Games list in the Third Party Games list. It'll most likely come up with the Gordon HL background when you run it, but trust me, it works. Just create a game and see for yourself.
I hope this helps some of those with woes. I'm just glad I got everything working. :\
