As a network administrator, I have to laugh and cry at the sheer stupidity of Steam/Valve. The CS 1.6 content was hosted on only a few servers, with millions of people worldwide hammering it continuously, making more people frustrated, and less likely to get their product, and slowing the crap out of their network as a result.

Also, I can't believe bots are gone. They were the only good part of 1.6. And having to have an internet connection to play a LAN game? Pah. If we had to pay for this, and it had to verify our resources then, I wouldn't mind. But even when it was Beta and free...? How are we meant to get more people playing the future of CS at LANs? What about the people on 56k? (Christ, I'm on 512/128 and I still got bent over by Steam)(http://www.users.on.net/hoogs/yeahright.png)

All in all, a VERY bad move for Valve and Steam. I hope all other companies sit up and take notice, and have this on their "not to do" list.
very true and thx, one thing also with all the skrew ups, one thing really ticks me is that steam aka VALVE do not ever talk about whats going on and keep us updated, iam not asking for every hr or even 5 but come on you have had to know that there where going to be this many peeps trying to dl this, and yet still no word from them, not what i would do in a biz type job

hey cpd. this isn't the first time valve has done this. remember back to when they first released 1.6beta thru steam and completely underestimated the amount of users, leaving tons of people out in the cold.. holding a copy of steam and not able to get on any servers. its seems they haven't learnt from past errors. but also, you have to take into account this game is free and they are doing a lot of good hard work for us cs fans, of whom the majority bitch and gripe when things go wrong and dont say a damn thing when they are able to play. sure it would have been nice if they had acquired more content servers and more bandwidth for the initial few days of download/update saturation.. but they didn't. probably because that costs money, so who can blame them. how many of us are paying for this?! i'd have to say none. some may have paid years back for a hl key... but they haven't seen money from counter-strike players for a long time (unless you went and got the retail version.. don't know many who did that, but there must be enough.) to conclude, everyone just wake up to the realization that you aren't going to be playing soon, this isn't going to be a smooth ride to 1.6, go do something else in the meantime (lord knows most of you need to.)

type status on the console during the game

or open the steam.log file in your steam directory and

                    search for it.

ya... i would have to agree that valve's support and 'keeping us in the mix' grade is fairly low. you have to rely on reading other people's woes on this website's forums in order to keep apprised of the issues. posting a little note on the steam site (when you can access it) really isn't that difficult or time consuming.

we love the game valve, let us play it, let us know what to do to play it, let us know what is wrong, let us feel involved...

95 minutes remaining... and another uncounted number of minutes of 'secret stealth' updating while my comp freezes when i shall try to join a game when the 95 minutes are up.

if u guys looked properly u would of found ur answer:
                            SteamID Retrieval

If you play in leagues or just would like to know your SteamID here is how it can be found without entering the game:

Locate your Steam Directory - ie "C:\Program Files\Steam"

Open steam.log using a text editor

Look for this: "attempting new connection 0,216.228.115.67:27030 for 0:1:11967"

The underlined portion is your SteamID. You may also use the more familiar method of connecting to an Internet game server and typing 'status' in the console.

does anyone have a fix yet for the "Could not connect to the Steam Network, it is either down or your internet connection is not working." I have already tried restarting and resinstalling multiple times. Also my internet connecion is fine.
