Important Steam Information

This was a horrible mistake. Making their *singleplayer* games only playable with an active internet connection helps them stop piracy, but it means you--you guessed it--need the internet up to play.



I can't wait until I have set up HL2 for steam (to get the first update) and my internet goes down. I can no longer play HL2 singleplayer. Good thinking, VALVe!

Converting all users to Steam? WTF does that mean? There is something very wrong with this picture.



As far as I read it, the only thing that is changing is that you will need a new Steam account and a CD-Key to use Steam. CS 1.6 is still beta. They haven't said squat about 1.5, so I should be able to run hl.exe -game cstrike tomorrow night and be able to play 1.5 without Steam. Is that right? But in a few weeks they are going to make 1.6 offical, and you WILL need Steam to play that.



Now, I am not one to bash Valve. When 1.4 came out, I was happy, I liked the changes, and I like the changes in 1.6. But Steam is NOT a good idea. The system that was in place before, the ole' download new .exe file to update, and .exe to use when playing single player/lan worked just damn fine. Ever heard the phrase "If ain't broke, don't fix it" ? Ok yeah, I like the new In-GAME GUI, it makes things a lot easier to manage, and bots are good, and Friends is also a great idea. But all those things could've been added into an .exe file. Steam also requires a lot of bandwidth, the kind that 56k users don't have. That is dropping a lot of users right there. Plus you have to have an internet connection to play a LAN game or play bots by yourself? How stupid is that, why would anyone play Bots when they are online and can just go play real people? Steam is also really buggy. One day it will work just fine, but the next it won't work at all.



They are going to try to sell us games over Steam, now granted you can go buy a Retail copy of HL2 or CS2, but really, who wants to pay for something when all they have to show for it is their logon name and password? I think most people are going to want to have something in their hands when the fork out their cash. And pay by monthly basis? Please, don't make me laugh. Valve can't even release a SINGLE update in 9 months, let alone a whole other mod.



The bottom line is that the old system worked fine, and this new one is going to alienate a lot of users.

Can anyone tell the the correct time Steam final is releasing? Coz sometime it is written as 11:00am PST and sometimes as 11:00am PDT....

Well if the release is 11:00am PST then in Arizona it will be 12:00pm in AZ...and if the release is at 11:00am PDT then it will be 11:00am in AZ also...

Let's say theoretically once the whole WonID system has been taken down and the Steam is up and running...if I were to go to the store and buy a copy of Half-Life, install it, but I don't have an internet connection, I wouldn't be able to play it b/c I can't authenticate with steam?



Or is it just for CS 1.6 and DoD 1.0?

As much as I like making fun of you, I agree. I like 1.6, I've had time to get used to it. So it's not really going to be a big shock when it's finally released. Plus Friends is the coolest thing ever.

i like 1.6 too, if you don't take the bugs into consideration (hit boxes on shield, awm reload bug) and ofcourse all the shield maidens running around or camping in corners.



but the thing i really don't like about steam is the following message that i'm sure everyone else has already seen:

This game is currently unavailable.

Please try again at another time.



i mean, when 1.6 goes gold and is the only internet playable version i would not want to see that message when i'm starting cs, even if i want to play on a lan (and having an internet connection present).



but so far, this message has popped up without a clear cause lots of times. hell, even now, with still plenty of time until steam goes gold, cs in unavailable.

The only thing i've realized is that by releasing Steam at 11PM PST time, it is saving Valve the trouble of every1 owning its bandwidth within the first minute as that not a lot of people are home at their computer at this time. By releasing it at this time, people will slowly register, instead of releasing it at a prime time where every1 is at their computer.

well, of course u'd still be able to play it (offline for sure; not sure about online because won auth servers will go down sometime within the next few weeks - he said) because it'd be half-life v1.0.0.0 (unless u get some sort of platium pack or whatever that comes with a newer version, but i don't think any of 'em will be Steam-based.

1. no idea, but i will reinstall Steam just in case - i want a clean install. just to be certain. but i'm sure they'll state this tomorrow with the download. it's very likely that u'll have to reinstall because of the new registration system, which will ask for a cd-key (unlike the previous one)... but the safest bet is to not guess and wait 'till tomorrow.



2. i don't see why not get it from the official site (unless it gets too slow), but i'm sure a million other sites will host a mirror of the new client. just like they did when the beta first came out.



3. once again, no clue... check back tomorrow and u'll know. :P
