HL2 Delayed?

The source-code leak shouldn't require months of delay. Clearly, there are people at Valve who are feeling self-important over this whole thing. They need to think about what missing a whole year of revenue will do their return on investment into the source engine in the first place.



The whole point of developing the advanced engine was that they could write superior products with it. When it gets leaked to everyone else, it makes the most sense to capture as much of the market as soon as you can, before others can incorporate your innovations into their work. Giving the competition a year of free development time with all of your hard work is (to use a gentle word) foolish.

Looks like a Vivendi rep isn't consulting Valve again before making these statements. The delay isn't confirmed by Valve or Vivendi for that matter.

I don't know whats worse, the person who stole the source code, or the thousands upon thousands who downloaded it for "educational" purposes. This is definately a major setback, as I (and I'm sure everyone here) was lusting to play HL2 by the end of the year.

This isn't about me, pal. This is about Valve realizing that in some cases, whats good for the customer is also good for them.

Yes but you've also got to take into consideration that by having the source code, potential hack creators could very easily create working cheats for HL2, and possibly its mods. Would you rather have the game 4 months earlier only to have it infested with cheaters, or wait, and have it slightly less infested with cheaters?

They can fix those problems (with Steam) when people start playing online. For the first few months, nerds wont even plug the network cable in because they'll be too busy trying to get Gordon Freeman and whats-her-name to have sex. Really, people want to play HL2 and netcode can be fixed some other time...



Incidentally, this is the SAME strategy Valve used against OGC and other powerful cheats. First, the developed Steam, then they developed VAC. First they ensured their market presence and their revenue model, then they made the customers really happy.

Convenient excuse?



If you had called up your local BestBuy about a week ago(before any code got stolen)and asked them when HL2 was going to be released you would have gotten a very close release date to what it is in the press release. Seems like this is just a good excuse for something that was already planned.
