I don't know whats worse, the person who stole the source code, or the thousands upon thousands who downloaded it for "educational" purposes.
Wow, your morals seem to be a bit off. I don't know what motivations the intruders had when acquiring the Source source (the name is somewhat dumb), but surely they committed the bigger crime - unlawful access into a computer system vs. illicit possession of copyrighted material. As to the evilness of their actions, some of the people downloading the code may end up pointing out security vulnerabilities and maybe even making mod-type add-ons.

But about the leak-delay link, I agree with #22. Surely the delay can't cause THAT much rewriting of the code? If any security-related stuff needs to be recoded, well, good, because then it was unreliable in the first place. I suppose the CDkey authentication part may include actual secrets or w/e, so that bit may need to be reworked. I think that is has even been confirmed by emails from Valve that the leak did not cause at least the original delay.

There's even bigger news. It seems that the hacker didn't just get the source code. Accourding to halflife2.net, a playable pre-release was leaked after the reports of yet another HL2 release delay. Some people think the hacker has a lot of files and that he's releasing them only after delays are annouced. The source code was released soon after the Sept 30th delay and the pre-release was sent out after the April '04 release.

        Convenient excuse?

If you had called up your local BestBuy about a week ago(before any code got stolen)and asked them when HL2 was going to be released you would have gotten a very close release date to what it is in the press release. Seems like this is just a good excuse for something that was already planned.
How do u know it was before it was stolen and/or they knew?

Im still waiting from some form of confirmation from valve, but this really fucking pisses me off. The whole fucking thing could have been avoided if the bastards just released it on the fucking 30th like promised.

this just sounds like an excuse to me, just becuse the source was taken doesnt seem like a good reason to rewrite that entire part. I mean how much could they possably change in it to make it different? Also you didnt see doom 3 makers starting all over after the alpha of the game got leaked. I also dont get why they dont just put it out and patch it later, i mean they did that with steam what makes this so much different?

I wasnt really looking forward to hl2, just some of the mods for it, this however does bother me just because it sounds so lame.

              *sigh*

I wonder how many people will go out and get real lives now this is all over? I can't see this coming out until about this time next year.

You've waited 5 years, another couple of months won't hurt you.
Most of us didn't wait five years. We only heard about the game coming out on September 30th a few months ago. We've waited since then until September 30th like crack addicts. All Valve needs to do to make everyone happy is NEVER (and I mean NEVER) mention a release date until the game is 100 percent ready (in the box and ready to be shipped).

I'm not sure how everyone else feels, but I know I'm beyond sick and tired of Valve mentioning release dates and not keeping up with them. It would be understandable in HL2's case since this ugly situation with the hacker came about, but for Condition Zero and the year long wait on beta testing Steam/1.6? At least if Steam worked properly.. but come on

the incident happened b4 the delay and valve prolly kept their mouths shut till the last minute so they wouldnt let the hackers know they had found out

its harder to catch som1 who knows ur comming

Half-Life 1 was delayed by almost one year. From the recent delays, it seems likely that Half-Life 2 will follow a similar path.

According to Gabe's email, the code was stolen 9/19/03, which is a lot longer than a week ago. It's not an excuse. The initial delay was because the game wasn't done yet. If this delay comes as planned, though, then it indeed will be because of the hack. The game was pretty damn close to being finished not too long ago.

Quite a few people HAVE been waiting almost 5 years. All the TF2 junkies have religiously followed the idea of it coming out. For them, I guess, it's not that big of a delay, but disappointing all the same.

As for CS:CZ, that's not even VALVe making it, for the most part, so it's hard to blame VALVe for that blunder. That whole game has been a big series of bad decisions, however, especially when you have 4 different developers having worked on the game.

Anyway, this will probably get confirmed, and when it does, it'll be disappointing, but rather understandable, unfortunately.

This is why valve sucks.. there was no leak its just a delay from them so they thought they better think of something. Doom 3 better come out soon :)
