Nice bit of writing. thx m8.

A perfect map in my view should have 2 (max 3 choke points). Dust ex. has 2 the T junction and the underpass. The team that rush to "choke" points should have a slight advantage. de_maps gives the attacker choice where the cs_maps don't, guess thats why most clan matches are played on de_maps (apart from the hossies bugs that have now been fixed). Its very important that the mapper makes the cover and layout of the map so both teams have a good chance of wining. The bigest problems with new maps are that they tend to be too big, CT and T's need to be able to predict where the others are comming from.

My Fav map: Prodigy & backalley for 5v5 or 6v6 and de_chateau for 7v7 or more.

good maps = balanced and cater for several playing styles (sniping, rushing, stealth)

popular maps = instant gratification ( i.e lots of action and simple layout)

I dont like sections of maps that have really anoying hiding places like the various dark corners in storm. Places that are away from the objective and exist only for camping (plenty of these at the dust T spawn).

You know it's worth while writing articles when it gets quoted like it has in the article. It proves people read it. Which is a bonus.

Instant gratification is always a bonus if you want a map to become popular among the 20 minuters (ie, players who have a few mins to kill and so play CS). Dust has some of that, Dust 2 has a little less. It's your immediate ability to find an enemy in those maps that pushes you to play them.

What I like are maps with more unique 'toys' to play with. Take TFC - I like finding innovative and unexpected places to build sentries or snipe from. I like placing pipebombs in places where the enemy is least likely to look but most likely to pass by. I like treating the map as if it is there not only a road, but a road with lots of toys along the way - things to keep me entertained when going from A to B to C and camping at D has become monotonous. I rarely have two TFC games that are as alike as two games often are in CS.

Instant gratification is one thing, but long term interest is another. Dust doesn't provide the long term interest for me - ok, it has a few places to play and try new things, but not a huge deal. It's no Rock2. I guess CS players are more likely to want to have 30mins of fragging than the satisfaction you get in TFC of working hard and succeeding.

It's just about the skill of the team
Oh, I know that, it's just Aztec doesn't seem to give you that edge to get back in the map if your team is only stuck with SMGs. Plus it seems to be the most camped-by-"attacking"-team map out there. Although thats just the players fault. The maps well designed enough that T camping rarely ever succeeds. At the end of the day though, it's not my map, so my points are unimportant. It's a great map, I just don't like it myself. :p

I think the reason for this is that when you plant it at the other site, the damn bomb explosion radius covers pretty much every single spot on the map, except for the far corner of the outside area (past the ladder and behidn the crates). Barney: If you finish the update, make sure to lower the power of the explosion by at least 20 or so.
Perhaps, but to me it just seems that the other site is underused, particularly when the teams are still 50% or more alive

Considering you make maps for a living I'm surprise to hear you say that. Maps are biased, one only has to look at Assault, the CT have to be good players otherwise it's no contest. Aztec is a bad example as it is relatively even and for the record most of Narbys maps have been fairly even.

Skill has a lot to do with it but when I look at biased design I say "Given 2 teams of equal skill and co-ordination, who generally wins more often" Every map is biased its the nature of the design of real world maps.

Now I'm not saying bias is neccesarily bad. I really enjoy the challenge of being CT on assault or 747.

rock2 is just half a map mirrored over, like most of tfcs maps.. crap.

The good maps (in my opinon) in cs are the ``realistic'' ones where they arent just set in a desert or aztec (god knows where thats meant to be set). The best maps are the ones like backalley and prodigy, where theres no one place looks the same as the other, its completely seamless.

                                These are the best maps.

Loeb dust for just killing newbies as a team tho suckers
