I still think people are going to gradually move back to CS 1.6 after CS:S's release. It's sad, but I think it's just the way things work. Be it a new game, or an expansion/update to CS, people always come back to the original...
i disagree, half-life 2 has the potential to give the cs community a boost. plenty of people who aren't playing/have never played half-life are going to play half-life 2, and a lot of them are going to give cs:source a shot. six months to a year after half-life 2+cs:source go retail i think the only people who will still be playing 1.6 are those who are unable to make the move.

crash to desktop as well but found a way to not crash... but then i cant find servers to play on so i gotta cheat and ask buds for ip's. to play cs source without crashes or bugs just load cs 1.6, then alt tab to games list and open cs source beta. play enjoy never crash. well works for me at least...

Damn since I got the update I can't get in a server anymore with out it crashing to the desktop.
Yeah, same here. My CS:S worked PERFECTLY before, getting 30-70 fps. I never had any crashes.

Then after this update, everytime I join a server, it crashes.

I couldn't give a crap about the HL2 preload, or new maps for that matter. I'd rather see CS: Source nice and stable. Fixing the glitches in the game itself comes before cranking out new maps. I really do think they need to optimize the game for those who don't have those wonderful high end computers.

Not everyone has a 3.4 GHz rig with 2 GB of RAM and a Radeon X800 etc etc etc. The video stress test said I had about 56 or 57 FPS, and yet in game, I get anywhere from 15 to 50. It's like playing CS on my old Athlon 650 with a TNT 2...

I see the the Beta testing for CS:S lasting at least another month.

running the video test thingy with everything on high @ 1024, I get 55 fps :), and source plays sweet, looks sweet, and guys, if the BETA keeps fooking up, just hang on till the offical release, the bugs/whatever, will have been worked out and u wont have a cow in the process.

You're lucky you can even play the game. my friend has 3ghz, 1Gb RAM, and Geforce 6800 and he crashes to desktop every time.

is it worth it to buy cs:cz, so that i can jump on this cs:s bandwagon? (i have some money to burn)

in other words, will i have computer problems or awful performance? i've read a lot of people complaining about crashes and inability to play, and i'm afraid that i will experience the same things because ati doesn't support driver updates for laptop cards (this may or may not matter since cs:s min requirement is dx 7?). it is possible all the people experiencing problems are the vocal minority while everyone else is playing...

                    whats the word?

"r_3dsky 0" and "r_shadows 0" are your friend, then. I can usually leave the shadows on, but the 3dsky just projects the background (which is what people think is the oasis if they zoom out, it's the 3dsky) and turning it off makes the game a lot smoother. That and this last patch. I left on 2xTAA and i swear it was still running better than it was last night.

I don't like how your view doesn't hike up as you fire simulating recoil, because you think you're firing really accurately, but you're not.

start up bugs should have been fixed in the alpha, not the beta
A quick perusal of this very thread, plus my own experience, indicates that startup is not the only time people are experiencing a crash to desktop. That validates my "more than one bug" suggestion.

how long has source engine been in dev? if this is simply a cs:s mod bug, then it shouldn't be extremely difficult to fix.
Valve is a small company, they can't possibly have accounted for every hardware and software configuration out there. That's why the beta exists - to find these unexpected problems.

have you seen the changelog? if they don't notice sv_pauseable is set to 1 by default by now, what other bugs have they overlooked?
You picked the most insignificant change they made and presented it as representative of the entire update? Way to go, pal.

Valve probably should have made everyone write some sort of IQ test before allowing them into the beta.

Hey, jackasses who are complaining about "the crash to desktop bug" not being fixed:

                                1) Has it occurred to you that there might be more than one bug that cause these crashes?

                                2) Has it occurred to you that they might be difficult bugs to fix, and that they could take some time?

                                3) Aren't some fixes better than none?
Nicely put Member. I think that just sloved the complaining and bitching problem about Steam and the rest of the game on it lol. Good Job :-D

Ok for one, ATI such support your video card on their updates, might just be a special place to update it but check out www.ati.com for the card updates. Second, it should run fine, even though laptops are always made for gaming, my 17in. Laptop with a Nvidia 5200 Go 64MB video card and a 3Ghz(er), is able to run CS:S and many other games very well, so I think you shouldn't have a problem you could always log into a friends account that has it test it before you get CS:CZ if you understand what I mean?
