    deep impact

Mr Bond has written another great article entitled Deep Impact. What makes Counter-Strike fun? What makes the fun last? In Deep Impact, Bond takes a look at these questions.
Despite its limitations, one of Counter-Strike's biggest advantages comes from it being a mod; continuous updates are now frowned upon, they are adored. Not just any old "network-code-tweaked-build-10023" updates either: since 1999 CS has been constantly revamped with new features, maps and improvements many according to user feedback. Originally, of course, CS was hampered by horrible problems but even past version 1.0, when CS was at the standard of a retail product, it has continued to receive large and useful updates. The recently released version 1.4, for example, changes the game in drastic ways.

This fact alone, over time, has helped to build up the massive online CS community which keeps seasoned gamers coming back for a experience that is newer and, in some cases, better. In turn, the CS community has given a lot back to CS, with efforts such as anti-cheat programs, custom skins, models, scripts, and even massive websites. Many game developers just do not see continued large updates as worthwhile. What CS has shown, though, is that a continued and consolidated effort to improve and add on to the original game can drastically prolong a title's online popularity.

i honestly think one of the most important things that helps make cs so popular is the fact that when you die you have to wait till the round is over. i have ALWAYS wanted a game like this, and when cs came along it was perfect. the idea that you have to be careful while attacking really helps you decide on what you plan to do, it isnt like TFC or HLDM where you die and respawn instantly, after a while that just gets boring because you dont worry about dying, afterall youll just start again, and wont lose money. but cs is different, you have to be careful and you cant just run around acting stupid. i dont understan why more people dont ever talk about this making cs so popular.

Look forward to his Articles, concise and straightforward is the way to go...good-job...And yes, the loyal family of Cs players do appreciate the fact that many people putforth alot of time and effort to make this game what it is. We are all guilty of not taking the time to say " THANKS "....Cs is very unique and will certainly become much more in the future...........Strabo...( still hate h@kzors )

exactly my position! Every kill in Counter-Strike MATTERS, since you are taking out a person who will not be able to harm you or any of your teammates for the rest of that round! Added to the fact that cs started out (and still is) free and that's 2 big reasons why it's so popular.

Yes I most definitely agree. When you sit on your butt doing nothing because you got dead, or when you die so quickly and easily, it makes you take your playing much more seriously, and adds more excitement and a sense of danger to the game. I think this is perhaps the most influential feature of CS, although we're so used to it we don't realize it.

Oh, and great article morp-I mean, Mr. Bond. HA HA had you fooled for a second...HA HA HA ha ha ha...ha.....ha....aaah....somebody help me. please.

Imagine CS without the likes of Dust, Aztec, Millitia and Assault
Don't know about you, but I could easily imagine CS without militia & assault and a whole bunch of other hostage rescue maps such as cs_siege/cs_backalley/cs_estate/cs_thunder, which are failures of levelmaking. Boring maps, which can not and will not be played in Clanwars or any tournaments.

thunder isnt an official map anymore so we are already without it. siege and assault are hardly played by me so i can easily picture cs without them, as with militia. the maps i would really miss would be office (i dunno i just love it) italy, prodigy and nuke.

Well obviously there is personal taste but some of the maps you mentioned have great playability. They might suck for tournaments but the game isn't always designed for that. Admittedly I think Siege and Estate should meet up with a magnet but Backalley is fantastic street fighting map. Thunder had it's problems but it was still a fair bit of fun. Assault is a great example, it's not even remotely even but it's fun to play as CT to give yourself a good challenge.

If all games catered to tournaments we would have a hundred symetrical maps :)
