To argue that video games "cause" violence is absurd.

Any psychologist will tell you that violent outbursts like this one are a combination of things. Violent video games *might* be a contributing factor, but other things like parents, TV, bad childhood etc... are much more serious in deciding who goes nuts and who doesn't.

Because TV is a passive activity it is much more likely that someone will imitate what they see on T.V. than in an active activity(heh) like video games (studies have shown it).

I can't write anymore because I am pissed off at CNN.

Besides, public schools are trying to get away from religion in all aspects.



Btw, did the kid press "r" when wanted to reload his handgun? Did he have a mouse handy when he wanted to shoot someone? Blaming this on CS is completely ridiculous. CS doesn't give you any training at all when it comes down to reality. Does it de-sensitize us? No, any sane person would be disgusted and feel extremely bad for a person lying dead in cold blood. Just before the same person could have been shooting people in CS.



People like this look for an outlet. It used to be movies, then music, and now they are levitating to computer games. There will always be people finding outlets - and when they finally break, they may take on the fantasy of whichever one they chose. It was just CS this time.

That is what alex.S was responding to when he said "no," Hairy Scary Man. And I agree with him. How can you, M@V3R!CK, be so concerened over the use of the word "psycho" when 17 peoples' lives have been lost? This whole "political correctness" stuff is such bullshit. Since when do people start thinking that calling a mass-murderer "psycho" is disrespectful? Haw..

This has actually been a really interesting discussion to read. Even more interesting is the complete lack of the media bringing up such recent hits like "doom" and "wolfenstein 3d." Perhaps they will begin to recognize that a couple videos games actually came out AFTER 1988...



Then again Doom 3 will hit in a year and we're all screwed...

You can't outright deny cs provided this kid with killing knowledge. Games do teach kids to fire once into a person and move on as well as making them more imune to violence. This kid was obviously messed up but still, you can't deny that violent video games had SOME role in this.



On another note i would like to take this time to instult Judge Stephen Limbaugh. This man ruled that video games are not a freedom of spech and thus aren't protected under the constition. This was based on his belief that games don't influnce people in a way comparable to a movie or speech and are more like bord games. He proceded to support an ordance stating that minors cannot purchase games marked mature in Springfiled IL. If games don't infulnce people then why limit who can buy them?

A human life is the most valuable thing in the world, and to take someone's life is the worst thing that one can do. This most recent set of murders is horrific, as is every murder that is committed. I would like to first express my condolonces to the family members of those that were lost in this terrible attack.



As a CS player and server admin for over 2 years now, I know for a fact that CS did not "cause" these murders. I don't know exactly what "caused" it and I won't say that I do. I do know that for one do display such a lack of respect for human life, one must have some type of disorder, chemical imbalance, or something of the sort.



Second, this person had "bad relations with his parents." Family is where it all starts, and if you don't have someone close to you to confide in and to talk to genuinely, whether it be parents or family or close friends, one will have difficult relations with many people. The root causes seem clear to me: lack of a basic stable relationship (parents or relatives), and some sort of mental condition.



Also, this 19 year old had 4 registered guns and thousands of rounds of ammo. I don't believe guns should be banned, but at least have a limit or some sort of mental health check before selling that much to one person. At the very least his parents could talk to him about this; as it is NOT normal for a 19 year old to have that many weapons and spend that much time with guns.



As for CS, it cannot be pinned down to one game, let alone any set of games. First, if it wasn't CS it could be any of a vast number of violent video games or TV shows or magazines or etc., ALL of which have clearly labeled warnings on use by children. Second, I know MANY people who play these games a lot and I know NOBODY who ever takes any violence from the game into the real world. The game does NOT CAUSE violence or violent tendencies in a person, trust me I am way to passive to even hit someone, let alone do the unthinkable.



The only reason I can see why he was playing CS was for an outlet of his violence, a way to "get out" his anger without harming anyone. His parents or someone close to him should have seen this behavior (if people really care for you they should keep track of how much time you spend participating in violent activities and how much these activities consume you). He was obviously in NEED of help and if someone was there who cared about him they could direct him to assistance.



This is a serious matter and there is no "quick fix." Banning CS or any other game would have NO EFFECT besides even possibly taking an outlet away from people. The ONLY fix is to really care for someone and tell them if they are turning into a different, violent person, and to show them that someone really cares for them and will not let them carry out anything that would hurt themselves or others.

You can't blame this on CS, if the guy killled 17 people he had problems. So it's not cause of counter-strike. He had problems in his head.
