Outlawing guns still wouldn't prevent criminals from killing, stealing, etc.

And of course America would have much more of a crime problem, the U.S. has MANY more people than Japan. Many more people = many more stupid people = much more crime. The law-biding populous needs a way to protect themselves. In many situations you can't hop onto the phone and wait for the cops to arrive in 2 or 3 minutes.

There are also many more ways to injure or kill than guns.

Knives, blunt objects, hands (rape, etc. can be done with no weapon).

You say there was only one "gun" killing. How many plain old killings were reported? How many rapes? Etc.

Also, if someone was going to go on a killing spree, they could get a gun. There are black markets.

I used to live in Japan. Not everything is so wonderful as you are making it out to be.

If Japan is such an utopia of no crime, then why aren't other nations flocking to their ideals?

Btw, it seems to be a very self-centered idea that other people who hold the different viewpoint are illiterate, or moronic, etc.

Vasily seems to be the same way. And if people like him are like that, maybe you should realize that not everyone who thinks differently is "stupid" or "illiterate". They were just raised with different ideals and ideas. On moral debates, there will never be a clear winner, except on things our basic instinct is against (such as killing).

Oh yeah, guess what, when Singapore banned Half-Life/ CS/ TFC etc

The usually quiet, submissive singaporean gamers ( bout 1 mill ) created such a huge spamfest and hoohaa that the silly minister who banned it speedily removed the ban.

If banning Half-Life in such a small country does not work, imagine Germany........ Riots and strikes may occur in gun-happy Germany.

If someone tried banning it in USA, I think that would be many school shootouts.

As for the incident, sometimes pple do go over the edge and do insane things............

CS has one of the biggest computer game followings in the world, if you ask a random teenage guy whether he plays counter-strike or not, there's a good chance that he will. Also -- violence like this happens all over the world by people who probably never heard of counter strike.

18 people died and the majority of you are arguing wether CS was to blame or not... Is you playing CS worth the loss of others lives?

Now don't get me wrong I DON'T think CS is entirely to blame... It could very well be a combination of things... or nothing to do with the matter... but say this kid was playing violent games on a regular basis; say 5 hours a day... then he go's and does this... how can you say its not part of the problem? I'm guessing no one thats posted so far knew this kid, so how can you say Counter-Strike wasn't to blame?

Is it right to "assume" violent games aren't to blame and risk more innocent lives or should something be done?

Perhaps the media overblew the matter but its still something that needs to be looked into... didn't anyone notice the fact that he used a Glock and a Pump, and from what I've seen he was dressed similar to a Phoenix Connection Terrorist Model. That just scares me... On the other hand these things could all be coincidence... but don't try to pretend like you know his motivations.

Every thing that contributited to this incident is to blame... you can't dismiss one because the other had more of an affect.

Many of us play CS 2 to 5 hours on a regular bases (me = 2 or 3 hours). Do you see us running out and killing people? No. Some of the people that play CS are pacifists, and any killing makes them sick to the stomach. And yet they thoroughly enjoy CS.

CS is not reality. Which is why people like playing it. Let's do something which would be immoral in real life.

And most of us know killing people senselessly is immoral. This kid obviously didn't. He had mental problems. If it hadn't CS, it would have been Quake or UT. If he hadn't been a computer game, it would have been a movie. Or music. Or a violent book.

He just chose to take on the fantasy of CS. That's all. Not much could have prevented this except for maybe an adult realizing this kid's problem and getting him help.
