Second, this person had "bad relations with his parents." Family is where it all starts, and if you don't have someone close to you to confide in and to talk to genuinely, whether it be parents or family or close friends, one will have difficult relations with many people. The root causes seem clear to me: lack of a basic stable relationship (parents or relatives), and some sort of mental condition.
While I'm not sure our data is conclusive enough to nail down root causes with complete certainty, I strongly agree that a family situation could have been a huge contributor to this crime. I think that computer games are being used as a scapegoat or an easy target to avoid placing the blame elsewhere.

I agree that one factor separating responsible gamers from school-shooters is the ability to separate reality and fantasy and to not let them intermix. Such things are the product of, in my opinion, an improperly developed character or perhaps moral flaws resulting from that character dysfunction. These are things that parents should take responsibility for instilling in their kids. Hence the need for the scapegoat of computer games.

Specifically, I think that parents need to take greater responsibility for raising their kids correctly. They are really the bottom line for being most influential in a kid's life, and no matter what I would say that there's always something more that a parent could do. (Of course we must give consideration to any mental conditions the kids' may have that could play a part in this process)

I reject the argument that avoids parental responsibility (of course, with the aforementioned exceptions taken to mental illness) by saying that kids act on their own will or that they choose to ignore/disrespect their parents. Such kids are the result of flaws in parenting, namely not being taught proper respect or love for their elders, probably pointing to deeper psychological problems.

By the way rizzuh thank you for reporting on this, I think it's definitely a critical issue for the CS community to evaluate.

In fact, there are other ways of looking at this.

How many times have you come home from a very bad day, and used CS to calm down?

Who knows, maybe CS was actually delaying him for a little bit from violence. It was definitely other things in his life that brought him over the edge, how could something which absorbs anger, like CS, break someone over the edge? It's like punching a pillow instead of a person - in CS it's instead of a killing people, your killing avatars in a game. I think him playing CS delayed what happened. However it did happen after other influences brought him over the edge (like maybe being expelled from school? Just think of how you would feel.). Just like how punching a pillow sometimes doesn't do it for some people anymore.

Just another way of looking at things.

Note: Hopefully your using CS for fun, not as an outlet for anger. But CS does double for that use for those who need it - just like how your hopefully using a pillow to rest on, not for punching...but if you need to, go ahead.

True, CS was a contributing factor to this kid's "rampage," no doubt. As was, perhaps, Doom or Quake to the Columbine shooting. But limiting a game to adults is not the answer.

if this guy hadnt played CS, there is a fair chance this never would have happened.

That's possibly one of the stupidest things I've heard.

Maybe if he hadn't played CS, or any other video games (including Pac-Man) watched any television, movies, read any books, magazines, never listened to any music, radio, or talked to any people there would have been a chance this wouldn't have happened.
            I agree with you man

also in your news post you said "no one really knows if this psycho did or did not try to emulate CS with his attack."...isnt the use of "psycho" a little disrespectful?

That is what alex.S was responding to when he said "no," Hairy Scary Man. And I agree with him. How can you, M@V3R!CK, be so concerened over the use of the word "psycho" when 17 peoples' lives have been lost? This whole "political correctness" stuff is such bullshit. Since when do people start thinking that calling a mass-murderer "psycho" is disrespectful? Haw..

it is bad what happened but what bout his family and other ppl that cared bout him...if u killed a bunch of ppl would u want ppl callin u pyscho?
YES psyco cause thats what he is

read the definition of psyco in a dictionnary

I call things by there name ! sorry !

CS has one of the biggest computer game followings in the world, if you ask a random teenage guy whether he plays counter-strike or not, there's a good chance that he will. Also -- violence like this happens all over the world by people who probably never heard of counter strike.

I first read about this on Yahoo News the night after it happened. The more I read about the guy the more I had pause for thought. It would appear that he and I are much alike. I am 20 years old, he was 19. He owned a semiautomatic handgun and a pump action shotgun, as well as several other firearms. So do I. He was an avid sports shooter, a member of two gun clubs. I go to Shooter's (a local shooting range and gun store) as often as I can. There is evidence that he played violent video games. I too play violent video games, Counter-Strike and many others.

I wonder at what point did our beliefs and values differ? What happened? Where did he go wrong? I don't believe banning or restricting video games will prevent this thing from happening, nor will gun control. Ultimately I do not think there is much anyone can do when a thing like this happens. Mourn the dead perhaps, and move on with life. I can only hope that for every senseless piece of violence that splashes across the headlines, somewhere unknown to us is a great act of kindness and sacrifice that can somehow redeem mankind.

The Psycho Himself. Funny he looks like my neighbors son. Or maybe like half a dozen kids I knew in school. Or maybe someone I saw at WalMart the other day.

                            On a lighter note.

Several people were slaughtered in their homes just yesterday by people that have never played counter-strike before.

I don't think you need to make excuses for why people kill. It's human nature. That is our history.

Well, don`t really know what to say without making me look like total drop out in front of you guys, (i mean it, there are some really good posts in here) so I`ll just try to make it short.

                              But anyways..

Can`t really judge him cus I don`t know his motives. If he had mental problems, I don´t blame him that much, but he SHOULD HAVE gotten some professional help for it. ( hey, worked for me :P )

If he was trying to imitate the past shootouts in the US, then he was just a moron. I`m not averse to killing people, but you gotta have a reason for it!! F*king up innocent peoples lives is NOT right, not even in my opinion!

And then, the skimask. Well because he was trying to hide his identity, it might have been that he thougth of gettin away with it. I don`t know, just guessing here.

But if he was just trying to look good..

Finnish news didn`t say he was a cs fan, but pretty much knew what was going on when I saw the "CS fan kills 16" title. Yeah, like it´s been said before, if there´s a game, they´ll blame it. That Doom thing was really pathetic, for the news companies of course.

But like somebody stated earlier ( sorry, too lazy to look up your name ) the worst thing really was how the article quoted above made CS look like a game bent on brutal murder. Christ sake, why didn`t the doc just say "CS is played by murderous psychos all ready to snap at any given moment and go on a killing spree."

It seems that a vast majority has huge problems understanding games that include the slightest bit of violence.

But this thousands of miles away, and people who I don`t even know, what do I care!!

( Sorry for any bad grammar. Tryed to make my IQ look bigger that it is. :P )

I am sure stricter weapon laws would help to prevent this and other shootings. If someone has one or several weapons and is mentally ill, thinking about shooting people for one or many reasons, all he needs to do is come to a decision and start killing people. If this person does not have a gun, he would definitely think less about doing such drastic things since he has no weapons to remind or induce such thoughts. I'm sure this kid has laid in his bed and philosophized with one of his guns.

It sure protects against those "postal" rages where you just pick up a gun and start killing people out of anger, since you have no gun! You'd start killing people with a knife instead, and that is much much more inefficient. If you don't have a gun and it's very hard to get one, there's a much greater chance of knocking a stray evil thought off. If you have a gun lying around, this thought will come back and occupy you more and more, I'm sure. If you are mentally ill of course.
