more like they'd gain people buying new copies of the software to get around the ban
You honestly believe someone would pay another $50 or $60 for a game when there are plenty of other games to cheat in? Regardless of whether a game is good or not, $100-$120 is quite a bit of money to spend on a game. Most people would just move on to a different game. People, especially cheating bastards, are cheap. They don't value the gameplay enough to spend the extra cash.

It's been said before, it'll be said again. Because there are still kinks to be worked out. Think about HLirc, if they had global banning while that happened, we all would have been very unhappy.
Exactly. At first the bans have to be temporary to allow for things like HLirc. People calling for an immediate ban either don't realize that false positives happen or they don't think it will ever happen to them.

$50-$60??? Is that Canadian or something? New packages of half-life or counter-strike are listed on ebay for under $20 every day which a lot of cheaters would probably pay. I would if I was a cheater, although I would probably quit cheating so I could keep playing the game. Or... I would steak a CD-Key.... Good thing I'm not a cheater though.

P.S.~ Homelan thinks I'm a cheater. I "turned and shot a guy too fast". Bah, n00b servers, but I still have fun on the 24/7 italy ones...

/edit stupid thing wouldn't post right the first time b/c of my bad connection...

/edit2 horrible grammar, but I'm not gonna fix it. :-P

if you perm ban 14,000 people, do you honestly think that NONE of them are going to buy another copy of the game (WC3 in this case)? Especially when the cheat, a map-hack, isn't entirely as devastating as say OGC, and people CAN do without the hack because it doesnt reduce skill much.

if you perm ban say... 100,000 CS cheaters, many of those will go out, slap down $10-20 for new cd keys, and keep playing. Although, you might think that at LEAST 90% of the people who get banned and get new cdkeys would not cheat any more if they knew they will just get permabanned again. the ONLY reason valve has not and is not going to perm-ban cheaters is because they risk pissing off the people who get false-positived. bans, in my opinion, should go like this: 12 hour, 1 day, 3 days, 1 week, 3 weeks, 3 months, life. if there are a wave of false-positives reported, then everyone on their first or second ban (maybe 3rd too) should have their sentence reversed, and start at 12 hours again for the next offense. (this figures that most of the people hit with false-positives will be on their first 'offense' or their second if they reconnect to see what happened) This does commute the sentence of some real cheaters and screw over repeat offenders who get false-pos'd, but the cheaters will soon be rebanned and the repeats... well, i dont care what happens to them if they cheated that much. still, they WILL get new CD-Keys if one is banned for life, therefore making valve money. its a winwin, scoring more cash for valve while only seeing a cheater here and there, adding to the hilarity when we see "was Automatically Disconected From Secure Server."

This is a reply to both of you two. I was refering to the price of Warcraft III and other new games. I know that you can get Half-Life for $10 or $20, but if 14,000 people were banned from BattleNet I'd bet not even 2,000 would go out and fork over the money for a new key. I wouldn't...

You can't, but all servers are updated automaticly when they are in secure mode.. You can check if a server is secure by typing "status" in the console..

I hate this shit... Today I´ve played on several public servers and in ALL OF THEM there was atleast one person wallhacking... Fukk.. My opinion is that the cheating is worse than ever...

Lockharts suggestion on banning was good. I think the cheating will go down a bit that way.. To bad there is cs-******s out there..

Also sorry for the spelling... I´m from Sweden..

I'm tired of these little bastards ruining my fun every time a new hack comes out because ValvE won't do a perma ban on their lame existance. I could tell the day that new cheats were out as I get the most amazing shots made on me...... and no, it's not all skill. Cheaters will continue to download and install cheats as long as they know there will not be any punishment that will stay permanent.

I´m sure! When I die I always take the camera-view of the most suspicious player (like the one with 27kills in 14 minutes and only one death)..

Of course, maybe they had actual skill? You people who accuse legit players are just as bad as the hackers, if not worse. I find public servers extremely amusing, because people are such idiots these days, that they figure if they get shot through a wall while they are running, and making footsteps, that the killer is obviously cheating.

cheating is not as bad as before, so I guess u guys can all stop bitching. No effort is ever so successful that someone cant find something wrong with it.
