Hell I am amazed this happened in Vancouver, British Columbia yet. I used to live outside of Vancouver BC myself until I moved to Saskatchewan last year.

This doesn't suprise me really. Vancouver has always been somewhat infamous for high crime rates/break-ins/murders, and if you go to the East end of Vancouver you can fnd what some have called "the worst area in the world" for druggies that overdose daily, sell and use drugs, shoot up in the open etcetra.

One thing just occured to me. If I was running a cyber net cafe, I would have some security in the building to watch the players. Where was some armed or plainclothes guards to watch all the players in this net cafe so violence DOESNT break out like this? A few guard's even armed could have stopped the death.

Oh damn I just read the G&M article, it didn't even happen in Vancouver city, it happened in Coquitlam to boot.

Oh God, another reason for the government to keep internet café's to ages 18 and over. I agree with asspennies though:

"Some would argue that Counter-Strike is the cause of this tragedy. I maintain that they could have been playing the Sims or Hearts and still had this same sort of reaction."

        Very well said.

In 2001, there were roughly 260 gun homicides in Canada. There were approximately that many stabbings as well, and 210 fatal beatings. They have been cracking down on the guns, but here in Canada, they may as well register the baseball bats and knives as well because their numbers are about the same. Our gun control is pretty ineffective.

I'll admit, the car/game analogy is pretty good, but it doesn't work for a car and a gun, because the car isn't intended to be used to kill. I just don't understand why people think they need a gun to be safe.
Canada has 250 gun deaths per year, in a country that is as full of guns (per capita) as the US. In the US, however, we have eleven thousand gun-related deaths per year, never mind stabbings and beatings.

Interestingly enough, that number has been falling in recent years, and yet media coverage of the killings that do happen is skyrocketing.

Bottom line...someone killed someone else over an argument. Grossly stupid, and I can only hope our wonderful population doesn't try to spin this into a "omg the game made him do it", even though God knows they will...

Write more, but I'm gonna be late for class. Wups.

thats like saying "guns dont kill people, people do".

true a person has to pull the trigger but the gun surly helps in the "killing" department.

These are the kind of episodes that trigger "Anti" violent gamers which I think get the wrong impression. Video games are not the cause for these incidents but people that dont know how to control their anger or whats real and fantasy. I think that people should realize what is real and whats not. Its just video game....

I feel sorry for the kid....

I don't know if this has been posted or not, so I'm doing it now anyway.

I while ago an experiment was done to see if violent games DID have a link to violent outbursts from people, started due to the link with Doom 2 and a US Shooting leaving a teacher dead and some pupils dead as well (as well as the teenager, who killed himself afterwards). This pupil avidly played Doom and Doom2, and the experiment wanted to find out if there was a link.

The experiment, and documentary as a whole, was very simple. They took the investigator, and sat him in front of a man, who was supposed to have memorised a list of words. The investigator was told that each time the man got a word wrong (from the list he had in front of him), he was to punish the man, doing so by holding his hand in a bucket of ice for as long as he deemed suitable. If he got it right, he got a reward ( a little smarty in a jar). The average time the investigator did hold his hand in the water was 20 seconds.

Then the investigator played Mortal Combat (old console game) with the man for a whole day, on and off. At the end of the day, they did the experiment again. The average time approached 1 minute, at around 50 seconds (cant quite remember).

This demonstrates a serious link to violent games and violent attitude.

The documentary went on to highlight that young people, aged 10-14 were most affected by this, influencing their personality in later life. I think that this shooting WAS caused by counter-strike, and we can't hide from this. There may have been a deeper grudge involved, but violent games pushed them over the edge, and this resulted in somebodies death.

I find it very sadistic that people in the community think they can hide from this terrifying fact, and for this I am deeply disappointed by asspennies remarks, and anybody who who agrees with them, demonstrating possibly how he and others have become warped by this violent media. It's not just games which are to blame, it's our society, such as in films. We can't keep hiding from this, and we are all pathetic for trying. I don't post here often, but when I do, it's usually a meaningful post, and I want to make this clear. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US, WHO PLAY THESE GAMES, HAVE BEEN AFFECTED MENTALLY. If you believe you haven't, it may be true, but it may be that you are affected so badly you are blinded from this. I personally know I have been affected. I swear more openly, and get irritated more often, and it scares me - I don't want to be that type of person.

The action: I don't know. Don't ban these games, that's pathetic as well. But perhaps that we enjoy it so, this form of "entertainment", that it demonstrates the evil within us all, and our deeper uncontrollable subconscious. Read "Lord of the Flies" by william golding and you'll get an idea if you're at all literate. Enjoy these games, but do not let them control your lives, for the good of us all, don't!

listen, every time this kind of events happen it gets the exact same response from the people at this site (I use CSN as an example since they are the hardcore CS community site). Everyone gives their condolences and then quickly defends CS. Sure this could have happened playing the Sims, Quake, or Yahoo Pool, but it didn't. It happened playing Counter-Strike. Does this mean we should close down Internet Cafes and ban CS from being played? Of course not, but measure must be instituted to control the backlash that this popular game has created. Probably something like stronger security at Internet cafes or whatever. Even in this case not everyone will implement it and deaths (albeit rarely) will occur.

All you die-hard supporters must get your head out of your asses. This did happen because of CS. All CS players have experienced the rush of winning and the shear frustration of losing. Add some crazy people with guns and this shit happens. Start looking at things objectively instead of simply denying and formulating alternate scenarios. Otherwise, keep playing, it's a good game.

Bullshit. This shooting wasn't caused by Counter-Strike. It was caused by a child being poorly raised by shitty parents with a distorted view of life.

I firmly believe that parenting is roughly 2.65 * 10^3143365 more important in determining what will become of a person than ANY activity on earth, bar none.

Okay. Guess what, I've been affected mentally by growing up. I swear more openly, I dare to read a newspaper and drink coffee late in the evenings. I dare to set my own bedtime. I dare to get up and go to class at eight in the morning on three hours of sleep...or not. In fact, growing up has changed me into the man I have become...and you know what, everything I did contributed. Everything I saw, heard, read, or participated in. And yet, here I sit, listening to System of a Down, playing Counter-Strike, and winning or losing...most definitely not getting frustrated enough to pull a gun and kill someone. Don't you fucking tell me that a game drove this person to taking the life of another. That's a bullshit cop-out.

The only question that remains to me is how to fix someone who is hopelessly broken.

If this experiment took place as you described then I doubt a trained experimental psychologist would take it seriously. All it demonstrates is that for one man, after he played Mortal Kombat on and off for a whole day (which would piss me off too) an investigator arbitrarily decided how much longer that man would hold his hand in the bucket of icy water after a failed memory test. This experiment, as you describe it, has WAY too many uncontrolled variables to yield useful results. Besides, if this experiment you described yielded useable results it would only demonstrate a possible relationship between memorization of word lists and playing Mortal Kombat off and on for an entire day, not violent videogames and violence.

If you want to talk about experimentation regarding cruelty and anger I suggest you look into Milgrim's Stanford Prison Experiment. That one, in my opinion, sheds quite a bit more light on the effect that CS could have on people.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here. You say we should look at the situation objectively and therefore blame CS for this murder. Yet you say it's okay to keep playing and instead simply take measures to reduce or eliminate the violence that, according to you, will be produced by CS. I'm not entirely sure what your point is...are you trying to say that we should allow deadly violence to occur over a video game and then stop it as soon as it starts? Or are you trying to get people to stop being violent over CS alltogether? I can only hope you don't support the former statement, and the latter one would best be accomlished by keeping people from playing CS at all, speaking objectively, of course. But you defend CS and say we should keep playing anyway. Could you please clarify what you're getting at?

And you know, this makes me wonder, rizzuh you're pretty free with your own opinions. But do you ever feel your position as CSN webmaster forces you to restrict expressing your true opinion?
