GJ. My comp runs at like 150 degrees last I checked so I won't even attempt to overclock that unless I wanted to boil water, make popcorn, or fry an egg.

      PIII 800/GF2MX/128MB

My comp is an athlon XP 1800+ heh with 512 DDR but it doesn't get 60 fps on aztec in that open area and smokes murder it so I have it on medium so it just munches on my fps and devours it with two.

Oh yeah that's right I have a RADEON VE. Anyone have any tips on what card I could buy to get up to where smokes don't murder me? I don't think there are any 50 dollar cards that would work but I can buy a 100 dollar one. I'm planning on buying a Radeon 9700 in May and I already need $150 bucks for March(Zelda and GBA SP mmm) so going over a 100 seems pointless when I'm going to be getting a really nice graphics card that will fix all my problems in a little under 4 months I just want a quick fix so it stops annoying me.

Also I want to get vsync all set up properly.

It makes perfect sense. I mean when you think freezing you think 32 degrees. It's not like it's completely arbitrary or something. I would say what boiling is but I don't know and don't care. See our scale accounts for that, do I really need to know what temperature something boils? How does that bother me? Freezing on the other hand I do need to know so that's why they picked 32 which makes perfect sense because when I think cold, I think 32.

Aaah, overclocking, my old nemesis. I broke my GF2MX with unbelievably high overclocking: +3MHz core! It really wasn't worth it. And CS lagged even more.

Oh well, now I have GF3ti200 and HL gives me over 85fps.

Para my GF2MX lets me overclock both the core clock and the memory up to +30mhz to 205, and 215 respectively as the maximum completely stable speed. There's no extra cooling or anything on them. There hasn't even been a working fan in my computer for well over a year, I should sort that out though.

Heh, join the club. My hard drive is corrupted apparently so I cannot install a new OS.

My friend's always come to me when they have a computer related problem. It gets annoying sometimes, so I just yell at them. Or punch them.

Well, my CPU runs at 101, although it should run at 133, it wont, the CPU temperature gets to high. So i think overclocking over 133 for me is not a good idea :P

is it normal to have my "normal" cpu temp at 60°C +++. (snigger**snigger**)

                          °C
When I was referring to 90°F, I was saying ambient room temperature. I'll explain how this affects things, so you'll be sure to understand. :)

Let's say your CPU wants to heat (without a heatsink or fan or anything) to 200°F naturally. So you put a heatsink on it to try to cool that down to say 140°F by running air over the heatsink. Obviously, if you were running, say, 40°F air over your CPU heatsink, it would cool down pretty quickly.

However, if the air you run over it isn't a lot cooler than the temperature you want to get down to, then it won't cool as fast, and you'll need to push more air over it to cool it the same amount.

Additionally, the air in your room enters your case, then gets heated up by other components in your computer (such as your hard drive, other chipsets, etc), so the air passing by your CPU heatsink is actually considerably warmer than your room temperature.

So, add this all together, and you see that when my room temperature is around 70°F, it maybe gets boosted to 80°F by my components, and then runs past my CPU, giving a 60°F difference in temperature between where I want my CPU to be, and the air. That cools it pretty efficiently.

If, however, my room goes up to 100°F, my system components maybe boost this up to 110°F, and then there's only 30°F in difference between the air and where I want my CPU to be. That's often not enough to cool it properly when I'm putting a lot more voltage through my processor (without a very nice heatsink/fan), so my computer is more likely to crash.

I'm not for a second saying that my CPU would crash if it made it to 90°F, lol. It sits around 140-143°F usually under full load (I run SETI@home, so it's always at full load even when I'm not using it), and stays on 24/7.

First off, make sure you're running in 16-bit color. For some reason, 32-bit color makes the smoke lag many video cards hellishly. Also, is this 1.5 smoke, or 1.6 smoke that you're referring to?

As far as V-Sync... I don't use it myself, but that's because I usually sit around 75fps playing CS (yes, that's limited... but I don't see a huge point in bouncing up to 80 on occasion), and my monitor is set to 85hz. If you had a better video card, I might be able to recommend it (ie, if you got a consistant 99fps and ran at 85hz, and by constant FPS, I mean under every circumstance including the worst smokey environments you can think of). As it is, though, if your FPS is lower than your refresh rate, it will actually slow down your FPS notably, and make it more choppy, if you enable v-sync.

My GF3 Ti200 is at 220/500 stock cooling 100% stability. Video card overclocking, when having a decent cooling arrangement, can be very rewarding.

2 things, cheap chearfull gfx card untill you get a decent one, go with a cheap and cheerfull gf2. Wont have any problems untill you try to play newer dx8+ games.

And the temp thing, surely, freezing at 0 and boiling at 100 is easier to think of than 32, and, I am pretty sure they didnt pick 32, freezing "happened" to be at 32 after they had already chosen the scale, if they did pick it at 32 then the whole thing should be abolished because they were obviously incapable of common thought. I may be dumb, but what does your scale account for that others dont? they all account for the same, temperature, surely?

I know how to overclock my computer and have known before I read up on this. But can't it cause some of my software to not function properly? I tried it before and Warcraft III stopped running. It would just pick up and error in the reading of the CD.
