Apparently my monitor can run at 1600 x 1200 but my graphics card will only support 1280 x 1024. Time for a new graphics card! Or I could just get a new machine and install one of my Linux distros I have lying around on here.

well i overclock my p4 2 ghz to 2.5.. no stability problems .. and i also overclocked my gf4 mx 15% ... gets me about 1000 point increase in 3dmark.. never has crashed :p more fps in cs !!

if you overclock ur P4 and it starts to run hot, it automatically underclocks itself, so if you start to overheat then your "clock speed" will automatically turn down, redusing stress and therefore heat. You may/may not notice this. Basically if you have a P4 you havent got much to loose when overclocking the cpu, so just go for it.

You can imagine the picture. I can't say my pride hasn't been affected, though. It's much nicer sounding to say you have a 1GHz Athlon than a 900MHz Athlon... keeps you sounding like you're in the "relatively modern computer" category still, instead of the "old POS computer" category.

Celerons are crappy processors overall, but boy do they overclock! FSB only, of course, no multiplier changing if I recall correctly.



Anyway, decently written article Mr. Bond; I know I certainly wouldn't have attempted writing something remotely close to this technical for the CS audience, as I can imagine the trouble they'd get themselves into. Not that it was horribly technical or anything, actually seemed quite "dumbed down" to me, but not everyone knows a lot about hardware.



For now, I'm happy with my simple jump from 900MHz to 1GHz that I've been running for nearly two years now. Well, excluding about 2 months of the summer, when I drop it back down. Somehow, it doesn't stay quite as stable when ambient room temperatures are above 90 degrees or so. And no, you damn Europeans, I won't convert that to celcius for your benefit. :) With my GeForce 2, I was only able to get it from 200/333 to 215/360, which really doesn't help performance noticably.



One more thought, the whole cooling systems stuff. Yeah, cooling systems can quickly get more expensive than buying a better processor. That's why I tend to stay with high quality (but relatively inexpensive) starting stuff, and just do a mild overclock. However, some people start with the best stuff, and then use extreme cooling (like various liquids and such) to run them even faster. If you're rich, why not?



If you honestly understood the processes that Mr. Bond explained, I'd certainly recommend playing around a bit with very small increments in speed. Get comfortable with that level, then bump it up some more. That way, instead of wasting most of a day doing stress testing of your system and such, trying to overclock all at once... you can just spend 30 seconds on it each time you reboot your computer. Play some CS, make sure it's going fine, then next time you start up, bump up the speed again. It's a slow (overall) way of getting to top speed, but it wastes a lot less time.
