It's not just eye candy. Better graphics and better physics mean a more interactive world.
It also means paying through the nose for a graphics card that shouldn't be necessary. That "2 years down the road"? That'll be another $500 for shit that'll be outdated in 6 months. That broadband? That's for patches. No one really needs an "interactive world" where you can see the bumpmapped skidmarks on underwear that's hanging on a clothes line. Shenmue did just fine with what it had. A "more interactive world" means jack, and is NOT the make-or-break feature of a game. I don't want to have a game where a butterfly flaps its wings 200 virtual miles away and cause a tree to inexplicably fall on me.

PC gaming is about hardware and your willingness to pay way too much for it, just so you can play yet another FPS or MMORPG. Consoles actually make the DEVELOPERS work for better graphics and gameplay, whereas PC developers are getting far to comfortable in saying "Welp, fuck the framerate. nVidia is coming out with a new card soon anyway. Fuck QA too, we'll just release a 'beta' and let the players do the work".

I figure that with PCs, i can spend hundreds of dollars to play 2-3 games that will work only under mysterious voodoo magic, and will most likely require a patch before i even open the box. With a console, i can be guaranteed games from damn near every genre from people who damn well KNOW how to make games, such as Konami, Capcom, Namco, Rare, Square, Nintendo, et al. And guess what? They'll actually fucking work. And they'll work WITHOUT having to depend on the ability to play with thousands of idiots online.

I'm sure there are reasons for liking the PC better than a console, and i'm sure they'd make for good debate. Yours just fucking suck.

Nicely put mouth. Although I would have to say that not all computer games need that super-duper Radeon 8500000000000 to play. Before CS I was stuck on text-based games. I also had exactly two friends, both named Milton, and both wore thick glasses. Actually, they might have been the same person, but you never know.

No, you're just a moron. Anyone who doesn't see that a more interactive world = better game clearly enjoys simple minded games like the ones they make on consoles. Help Mario save the princess and eat mushrooms all day long! WHAT GREAT GAMEPLAY AND NO PATCHES NEEDED. Public betas greatly improve feedback to developers from ACUAL people with ACUAL systems. Gaming companies have to make sure their game works on an extremely broad range of platforms, much more difficult then making games for one system. And QA is there, taking care of issues you don't even know about. But the consoles themselves are not without their problems. The PS2 is a fucking joke when it comes to reliability. The launch models are almost all non functioning, and most of the newer models wear out fast due to Sony's use of cheap parts.

You obviously like fairy games where you keep pressing A to get the next line of text to scroll by (final fantasy). Some people actually enjoy playing games, not watching some anime figure swing his sword.

Yes both the console and PC market are flooded with rushed, useless "me too" crap, but that's not avoidable. You completely missed my entire point when I was talking about graphics and CPU power. My point was not just a better looking game = a better game. But since you're just truth media flame bait I'm not even going to bother explaining my stance on why PC gaming is vastly superior to console gaming when it comes to the core genres. Please go troll elsewhere.

The PS2 has been out for ages and its only recently became anything more than a ornament. It might have the lead now due to the fact its had an head start but the X-Box and GC are a different generation. The PS2 wont be able to keep up with 'em in 6months time.

Have you played ANYTHING that's come out after pong? Newsflash, Mr. Anachronism; systems have long since surpassed the days of Pitfall!.

And they're doing a remarkably piss-poor job of it these days. As an added bonus, it'll worsen if they decide to go for your dipshit notion of hyper-interactive environments. What, did you think that interactive environments just appear, that they come as a pack-in bundle for fast hardware?
The PS2 is a fucking joke when it comes to reliability. The launch models are almost all non functioning, and most of the newer models wear out fast due to Sony's use of cheap parts.
They use cheap parts because they have a good reason to. For $2-300, we get a complete system. Systems that are sold AT A LOSS. Secondly, it's far from common for a company's console to fail as the early PS2s have.

Thank you, captain extrapolation. Feel free to stuff that line up your ass, where you pulled it from.

Ok I'll explain it so perhaps even you can understand. Let us start simple. I'll use Half-Life as an example, and mouse/keyboard is not going to be part of my argument. Half-Life was released in 1998. It was an excellent game that set new standards for first person shooters. It had an evolving and fast paced story line that was part of the game. You played from start to finish, no cut scenes, no interruptions, just pure 100% quality action game play. No one can argue that Half-Life was a poor game. Now how far can you go with that? You play it for maybe a week, a month. Beat it. That's it right? Wrong. HLDM, you can duke it out with your friends or enemies across the country or living room. Custom maps, internet forums, clans, an entire community sprouts up. Now this is all fine and dandy for months, but of course it too starts to grow somewhat tiring. Boom, SDK/TFC hit the net. A popular class based team play total conversion. All of a sudden you've forgotten all about Gordon Freeman, you're capping the flag, defending the command points, sniping the soldiers, and blasting away the engineers. But that is most certainly not all. With the SDK out there the community gets the never before scene power to do what they want with the game, and release it free for anyone to play. One such person known as Gooseman did just that. Beta after beta Counter-Strike grows to be the most popular online action game, ever. And it's free, from the community, for the community. Half-Life was released for the PS2, where is it now? Heh, thought so.

Ok so now we see where community and the internet can be used to dominate the lifespan and enjoyment in what was a mere, but good, action title. Let's look at game play itself. You seem to believe that a game that looks pretty and is interactive takes away from the game play. This is in fact quite the opposite. If I can defeat an enemy by luring him into a trap on a slippery surface, cause him to fall over, and then allow me to easily kill him while he's down, I've just taken away the need for dice rolls and stat points. You are actually planning your attacks, then using your actual gaming skill, not relying on +2 str against ogres. This is a virtual simulated world not a board game. Simulated voice will soon make way for more interaction with characters in your game world. No more text scrollers with dull music to set the mood. Now obviously consoles aren't going to sit back and let the PC get all the power, but the fact is you can't pump out a new console system every 2 years to keep up with the extremely accelerated PC market. The latest and greatest will always be on the PC, at least for some time, and it will help gaming in the ways I explained above. Consoles just don't stand up to what the PC has to offer. Granted, fighting games and racing games are all well and fun, the PC comes out on top when it comes to actual involvement with the game, and a community behind it. This comment page is proof of that.

And they're doing a remarkably piss-poor job of it these days. As an added bonus, it'll worsen if they decide to go for your dipshit notion of hyper-interactive environments. What, did you think that interactive environments just appear, that they come as a pack-in bundle for fast hardware?
Ah, you can't see down the road several years. That explains a lot.
