    PUBG Roadmap 2018
PLAYERUNKNOWN from Playerunknown's Battlegrounds fame, just posted the 2018 PUBG roadmap on what new features players can expect throughout the rest of the year. Some of the new updates include a visual overhaul to some assets, the addition of emotes, a new "4x4km" map, an experimental test server, new vehicles, new game modes, and more.

I'm sure that each and every single one of these changes will make the PUBG community 100% satisfied. The current plan is to have a major content release coming every two months.
    Players,

Today, I finally get to talk to you about our vision and roadmap for 2018. We have come a long way over the past 2 years and have learned so much. We’ve done a lot of planning over the last two months, and today we reveal how we want PUBG to evolve in 2018. We’ve worked hard over the past 2 years to build a good foundation for the most realistic Battle Royale experience out there. This year we plan to build on that foundation and really start to polish our features, squash the remaining bugs and expand the game even further.

When we came out of Steam Early Access, we told you that it was just the beginning of our journey. This year we’re committing to a major content delivery cycle every two months, the first of which is planned for this month. Each of these major updates will bring changes to specific systems and/or introduce new content. Smaller updates between the major ones will also continue throughout the year.

This year we want to involve our players in the ongoing development of PUBG even more than before, and to aid with this we plan to open an Experimental Test Server so we can get your valuable feedback on our feature/content development cycle sooner and for you to have a real impact on how our game changes and develops going forward.

One of the first changes they showed off were some visual changes, specifically with how at least one building looks.

    PUBG Roadmap 2018

The next major announcement is the reveal of a new "4x4km" island map. This map will first hit their Experimental Test Server to try out. It's just a shame so much of that map is nothing but water, but what can you do. They also announced that they are still working on a larger, 8x8km map. Like the smaller map, this one will also hit the Test Server but PLAYERUNKNOWN did not show off any concept art for this particular map, only the 4x4km one.

And next they showed off an Emote System for PUBG. That's right, PUBG will have emotes. Along with the map, the emotes will be added soon to the Test Server.

Other additions include achievements, improved friends' list, skins for your parachute, skins for weapons, and an overhaul to the ballistic system. This includes limb and vehicle bullet penetration in addition to walls. In 2018, the team will also overhaul their entire animation system for both third-person and first-person perspectives. They are aiming to make the animations "smoother and more reactive to the environment." The roadmap information also includes an overhaul for the parachuting system. They want to make it "more responsive" in addition to polishing up the animations more. Finally, the team wants to improve their armed and unarmed melee combat systems.

    But wait, there's more.

When it comes to stability, optimization, and security, the team plans to continue to work to combat cheaters, improve server stability, and continue with client and server optimizations.

Some audio improvements they announced are an increase in detail of vehicle sounds. These include suspension sounds and more skidding sounds. They also want to "work with surfaces that would reflect different weather conditions and add rain sounds to vehicle surfaces." Hold up, rain is coming back? It's about damn time. They also want to make gun sounds more distinct "depending on POV." Player movement sounds will also be improved and differ based on the equipment they're carrying.

Other improvements and additions include updates to the 3D replay system to help further the eSports push. They will also improve ranking and MMR throughout 2018. Custom games will also be expanded in 2018, including distribution to more players.

Finally, they announced the PUBG Developer Portal and the PUBG Developer API. There will also be a development blog for technical notes on new updates. The API will allow developers to tap into the player and match data.

PLAYERUNKNOWN says that this roadmap is not exhaustive and that there will be more that they haven't yet announced.

That all sounds like a metric ton to bite off for any team, especially when they want to do all of this and more in a span of time that now only has 9 months remaining.
