  • PlayStation 4 Neo Officially Named PlayStation 4 Pro - $400, 4K Media Streaming, and More

Sony officially announced the PlayStation 4 Neo today. Actually, they're calling it the PlayStation 4 Pro. It features 4.2 TFLOPS of GPU power, an 8-core AMD CPU, 8GB of GDDR5 memory, a 1TB HDD, and 4K media streaming capabilities.

Interestingly, it has been confirmed by multiple sources that despite the device being capable of streaming 4K media, it cannot actually play 4K Blu-ray discs. It lacks a UHD media player for some bizarre reason.

The PlayStation 4 Pro also won't feature native 4K gaming either. It will be upscaled. The power consumption, as seen in the above image can hit upwards of 310W. HDR was another big feature that was shown off during today's PlayStation Meeting event. However, you won't need a PS4 Pro in order to utilize it as an update, hitting as soon as next week, will enable HDR for all current PlayStation 4 owners.

Those worried that PlayStation 4 Pro owners will have the framerate advantage in multiplayer games should breathe easily. Sony says that there will be no framerate advantages for Pro users for multiplayer games. Single player games are another matter entirely.

The PlayStation 4 Pro is set to retail at $399 (USD) on November 10.

It should be noted that the Xbox One S, releasing on September 22, starts at $299 and actually includes a Blu-ray player capable of reading 4K video and includes HDR technology. The graphical processing power gulf between the Xbox One S and the PlayStation 4 Pro is, however, quite large. Similarly, the gulf between the PlayStation 4 Pro and Project Scorpio (due out next year) is also quite expansive.

At a glance, it is my opinion that Sony is really dropping the ball here. They are unable to deliver 4K Blu-ray capabilities that a competitor will offer in a device that ships earlier and at $100 less. They also come in well under the announced specs for Project Scorpio.
