  • Co-op Action Title, Mad Squad, Hits Kickstarter and Steam Greenlight with a Demo

An upcoming co-op action-platformer, Mad Squad, has launched its Kickstarter campaign and has also shown up on Steam Greenlight with a demo.
Interstellar Game Studios launches Mad Squad on Kickstarter and Steam Greenlight with a PC demo for up to 4 players. Mad Squad is a physics-based, 2.5D, Co-op Action-Platformer with a hilarious game mechanic.

“The controls are sharp, the theming is colorful, and the physics are so damn hilariously wonderful,” said Youtuber, Twitch Streamer, and voice-actor Old Man Cricky. “There were parts where it was glitchy of course, but if its physical based, I love it even more. For a game in Alpha, it delivers it’s potential to the players very well.”

In Mad Squad, you take on the role of a special forces unit with a dog, on a mission to save the world. You move through a voxel-themed world with realistic physics, from left to right, and encounter NPCs that forward the storyline in a funny manner. The game also has some Beat-Em-Up elements. Each character has its own set of attacks and varies in speed in strength.

“The controls and animations are precisely synched through using the so-called root motion of the animation,” says Reinhard Zach, the man behind Interstellar Game Studios. “This means that models, e.g. the player and enemies, are only moved through the movement of the animation which results in a natural look. Combine this approach with Animation Blend Trees, and you get a precise and transitionless movement between standing still to running for your life.”

You have the precise 360° control over your energy wave with your analog stick, assuming you have a gamepad. The energy wave even reflects physically correct of hit objects. This enables you, for example, to shoot on the ground and get blasted into the air by the reflected energy. Or just be silly and push your friend of the roof.

As fun as this game is to play alone, its real strength lies in the Co-op mode, where up to 4 players play simultaneously on the same screen, like in Little Big Planet and New Super Mario Bros. The distance between the multiple players is handled through the camera’s zoom and all players are visible at all times.

A big plus for the Kickstarter campaign, and what we would like to see more often, is that there is already a demo online, showing off the hilarious gameplay. Hopefully, this becomes a trend amongst game developers on Kickstarter, as it really helps the credibility and reveals what the developer is capable of. Download the alpha demo at game jolt.
