  • Details on Xbox One's Games with Gold Service

In addition to today's big reveal of a $399 (USD) Kinect-less Xbox One SKU, Microsoft also revealed their plans for the Games with Gold program on the Xbox One.

Starting in June, Xbox One owners with Xbox Live Gold will get both Max: The Curse of Brotherhood and Halo: Spartan Assault for free. If you also own an Xbox 360, you will get three games for that platform: Dark Souls, Charlie Murder, and Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition.

Now, there is a slight difference between the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One "Games with Gold" program. On the Xbox 360, you are allowed to keep any game you acquire from Games with Gold even if your Xbox Live Gold subscription runs out. That's not the case on the Xbox One. On the Xbox One, you will only get access to those games for as long as you are an Xbox Live Gold subscriber.

It sounds like it will work similar to how Sony does free games with PlayStation+. That is to say, you must get the free games when they are offered and they are yours to keep so long as you are a subscriber. You lose access to them once your subscription runs out but you can re-access them later on when you re-subscribe. At present, the details are a little up in the air on if that's actually how the program will work or not.
