Sony Confirms the PlayStation 4 Will Not Block Used Games

I will repeat that. Sony has confirmed that they will not block used games from being played on any PlayStation 4 console. Eurogamer sat down with Shuhei Yoshida of Sony Worldwide Studios to get the facts.
I sat down with Yoshida a few hours after the PS4 reveal tonight and one of the first things I asked was whether used games would be blocked.

"Do you want us to do that?" he asked.

No, I said. I think, if you buy something on a disc, that you have a kind of moral contract with the person you've bought it from that you retain some of that value and you can pass it on.

    Do you agree, I asked?

"Yes. That's the general expectation by consumers," said Yoshida. "They purchase physical form, they want to use it everywhere, right? So that's my expectation."

So if someone buys a PlayStation 4 game, I asked, you're not going to stop them reselling it?

"Aaaah," was Yoshida's initial answer, but seemingly only because he'd forgotten his line. "So what was our official answer to our internal question?" he asked his Japanese PR advisor. The advisor stepped in but didn't seem to answer clearly, at least to my ears. Yoshida then took control again firmly:

"So, used games can play on PS4. How is that?"

I said I thought that was fine.

Got it? Good. The ball is in Microsoft's court now to see if they'll go full on Big Brother mode with the new Xbox.

I think I just heard GameStop/EB Games HQ staff crack open a bottle of champagne somewhere in the distance.

MS would be stupid to block used games now that Sony mentioned that they won't, lots of people would buy a PS4 instead.

I'm happy to see that at least one of the 2 companies won't block them.

Not a very convincing answer, but I see no reason for him to lie. But, Sony has been known to back-track on their statements before.

I wonder if more games will more to having "online passes" though.

If Sony did go ahead and do that, then it would result in a massive loss to them. They're not stupid.

"So, used games can play on PS4. How is that?"

Depends. Will it cost money to unlock the multiplayer portion like BF:BC2 did? If so, no - not good. I sold my xbox and used the money to buy all the games I had on pc instead - best decision I ever made. :)
