This. I'm pretty sure that's exactly what they're doing again.

You sure don't seem to understand how games are developed or how modders think.

Oh man that's classic. It's like the director of the Patent office saying "everything can be invented has been invented"

          Good luck with that ethos.

            Denial is a funny thing.

It doesnt matter if there are mod tools. Lets say there are. A few mods will be created that very few will play at all and then die while 93% of the rest of player base play the game as is. Most mods will be tournament based, which shrinks the number much more. So many people complain about how DICE better do this in the game and DICE better use its resources for that in a game, but pull resources off and make mod tools for 7% of the player base! No mod tools?!?!! Im not buying unless there is. Im starting a petition.

The truth is still the truth. From different angles it doesnt make sense to have mod tools anymore when you are the developer. These things were added before because a dev team didnt think they were going to be around for long and wanted their games to live on. Now how is the mentality?

And as for my percentages, I dont have real numbers, but I know that the modding community is very very small today and those that played mods are about the same. You can be very generous and say 20% play mods all the time and I think we all know thats a VERY high number, and its still tiny compared to the rest of the game and the customers.

I hope there are mod tools, so that small percentage has something extra also, but Garand is correct regardless of the ridicule.

I want to add that mods didn't worked like in BF1942/V mostly because of the stats system (you need like 2000 hours to achieve max rank in BF2). For BF1942 you sure had more than 20% of the base player on mods.

As Crunch indicated above, the vast majority of people will play the game as is out of the box and the hours and hours of work the mod teams put into their projects will go for naught.

PoE is a perfect example, it's a top flight mod that hardly anyone played on a consistent basis.

and then of course , there are the awesome mods that a lot of people play and like. like pr and the other one in the second world war that i dont remember the name. In some games mods even turn out to be great stand alone games, like killing floor, natural selection 2 etc...
Also mods allow you, to go and play something different when your bored of the same exact thing, like in cod4 zombie mod . Also mod tools allow you to make new cool maps, and to do remakes . GReat remakes that even the game creators decide to include them in their official game (bf2142: wake island, karkand etc..) . So sometimes if it wasnt for mod tools you would still be playing the same maps in bf2142 over and over and wouldt have great maps with great ideas like wake island etc.

POE was a masterpiece.....DICE and EA purposely killed off the modding community with ranked servers, that's not a coincidence and the only reason people didn't play mods, they were more worried about that little rank next to their name on the scoreboard than the actual game play. The days of free content and EA are over, it no longer fits their business model, you'll never see another DICE game with mod tools, they know we will pop $15 for 3 maps without thinking twice about it.

their spokesperson said battlefield 3 MAY get mod tools. this was way back when 1943 was supposed to be coming out though, so take that with a grain of salt i guess.

I agree with a lot of this. Rank did make a HUGE difference and impact in gaming. I dont know if killing modding was the intent of it, but it did affect the outcome.

One part I disagree on is that I stopped playing mods because they would usually (Not always) trash my system. I had to reinstall 1942/2/CoD a number of times because of mod files doing something strange with the program. I had enough of that and decided playing mods were not for me. It wasnt because of rank or because I was bored. Maybe that was a poor mod or beta or who knows, but I had enough of that. Thats just me and my example and experience.

A lot of it is business decissions. As a corporation in it for the money, you cant let your employees give the company secrets away. I know that doesnt seem fair or just or its greed, but EA is hurting, we all know that, and I dont see how mod tools are going to help them stay afloat.

As I mentioned before, mod tools was a way to keep a game going when it seemed like it was never going to last much longer anyway. Doom, quake, UT, Warcraft, C&C, Starcraft; all had mapping/mod tools because they were stand alone or smaller companies at the time.

You know, now that I think about it, maybe mod tools were a way to get a fan base established and to increase the industry to what it is today and now that its accomplished that, its done.

The other issue are consoles. Publishers are trying to consolidate costs and why make tools that cannot be used on 2/3 your customer base. Basing 2/3 equal between PC, Xbox, and PS3, which is not equal at all. For this sake, lets go with it. Now as far as Battlefield 3 goes, its probably safe to say that its going to be VERY PC heavy.

I think I will stop here. This post was getting way TL;DR

I'm not 100% sure but I think in UT3 you can make a mod on PC, then upload it on the Epic website or somewhere and the Xbox360/PS3 players can download it.

Now if they did that where you could make maps and be able to have them on all platforms, thats a huge incentive.

I remember in the past they had map contests that ended up going nowhere, but people mentioned how they would pay for good community maps. Some of the maps in BF2/2142 were community made as well.

I mean a huge plus for mod tools is innovation. New ideas for a game or map. It sounds like just because of that alone, mod tools should be. The problem is when everything is said and done, if a developer changes anything from original, people complain. Thats not always true, but I sure do see it a lot.

Almost all the Valve games are moddable, and Starcraft 2 is modding on steroids. So there are developers who still can find it useful for their games, and business model. However I don't think it is something to expect, it's a wonderful addition to any game, but if the core game is good and dynamic enough I don't see it effecting longevity that much. I played years of Ghost recon, and was satisfied with the core games and the expansions, eventually I checked out mods and a few were amazing quality. It made the game last longer for sure, but it's inclusion isn't why I played the game for years, the same was true of BF2. Now Call of Duty modern warfare and up for my self and my friends TOTALLY needed mod tools, the core maps were always too small for our tastes, especially compared to the modded ones. I still bought Black ops because they had dedicated servers, brought back lean, and I will play Zombie. However the multiplayer, I have no intent on playing any more, people just memorize the maps, and it loses any sense of dynamic combat.

Rank/stats and achievements are probably the biggest issue with mods these days, and in my view it's only the players that caused that issue, not the developers of publishers. I started playing games with a monochrome screen on a 386, and original Nintendo. All of those things are still concepts I find useless, and as for rank in a FPS, a hindrance to newer players, who while aren't totally gimped are handicapped even more with a lack of equipment options. However I understand that a majority of players do like them, and they are cheaper to include then mod tools, so from a business stand point I get it.

So settle down when it comes to mod tools these days, if a developer clearly promises it, then yes by all means complain, quote their press releases and make them walk it back in public, or deliver on the promise. However I don't see that happening with Call of Duty black ops, and Treyarch did promise that for PC, while it still might come out, were are a few months in, and I haven't heard a word on it.

Consoles can be mod friendly we did see that with UT3, but I think they need to take the starcraft 2 approach and let the console makers take a cut from the sale of the mod. As much as I don't like Counter strike or Defense of the ancients, they are both testaments to the popularity of good mods. Hopefully they might get it one day, until then I'll be happy if my core games still are interesting and maintain quality or at least interesting ideas.
