    Re: Rumor: Battlefield 3 Limited Edition Contents Leaked

    Specifically to Frostbite;

    What has been said of how the frostbite editor works would seem to suggest it’s firmly welded to other systems in DICEland, it’s a proper big boys toy. I don’t see why FB2 would change that design, so even if they released the editor it would require a mod team to have a fairly excessive amount of IT infrastructure and expensive software licenses. It would be nice to think that BF3 might allow mods but from what’s been said I think it’s a big no (but I firmly believe the marketing guy will tell you the sky is pink if you’ll pre-order). In any case it would unlikely be as straight forward as BF2 was and no one ever said that was straight forward.

    But more generally;

    Mod tools are not something you would (normally) expect to be created specially. Tools that allow you to make a mod are not written after they would have been useful to the developer to make the game. Certainly some things may be different when tools are released, perhaps watered down or adapted, but not invented, the bigger effort usually being the paper work to explain how to use the tools.

    What has changed with time and consoles encourage is the flogging of a dead horse as standard practice. The tools remain useful to the developers for longer, they make more games on the same engine and they would risk having to compete with mod teams if they released the tools (perhaps more for ideas than anything). The sheer level of Battlefield spam DICE has at least attempted to produce being rather typical of that.
    There is also the issue of security, as the same game(s) span multiple platforms it is possible that a minor problem that is of no issue on a pc might allow you to take down all of Xbox live – to over dramatise the point. Keeping server files private is also in keeping with that as they will be the same files across all platforms but server files are of no (particular) use without mod tools ever since ranking.

    This is all on top of the more fundamental point that stand alone software is less and less useful in a situation where many people work on a single project at the same time - number crunching can be outsourced to servers, version tracking, files, builds can be managed by a server etc. – none of which leads towards a program(s) that is useful on (just) your home computer which is all a modder really has.

    As for BF3 I think it will be port. There is the chicken and egg debate but even if the first compiled build is for PC it will have been designed to run on a PS3 and Xbox, to me the order of compilation makes little difference as to whether the game is designed with console limitations in mind.

    64 player is a question of typing ‘64’ in a server configuration file where it says ‘playercount =’ (or similar), what will be interesting is if the PC game gets custom 64 player maps. 64 players on a 32 player map or 32 players on a 64 player map is not going to please anyone. In theory BC2 could be 64 player, dread to think what that would play like! I do hope they actually put the effort in to make the player count work rather than simply listing it as a statistic.

    I would hope the expansion pack nonsense is just that. I accept that pre-order incentives are now fairly normal but I prefer the way TDU2 went about it, it certainly doesn’t make sense to segregate the players from day 1. It would seem to serve to bribe Battlefield fans into pre-ordering and to penalise anyone the game attracts to the franchise after release. It hardly suggests DICE is particularly confident about the game if the best sales technique they could come up with was bribery. It also seems a little concerning that, for a Battlefield game, the best feature boasting thus far is nothing new to the series. It would be nice to have a scorecard of features for BF2 and see how many make it to BF3 – prone, jets and 64 player is simply not going to fill the back of the box.

      That is simply not true, we've brought up UT3, however a bigger console game was a even better example. Little big planet. It's mod capabilities are on the level of Starcraft 2. Especially with the second one.

      Being able to mount weapons on any surface, and more important in my mind, is being able to drag fallen enemies to safety. And while we have heard a decent amount of info, we should assume both that we know all the features we are going to get, or that what we know will survive until launch.

        Well bzb, I agree with your mod tool statements, but the BF3 being a port, I dont think thats entirely true. BC2 was a port. Same frostbite 1.5 all across the board. However, FB2 PC has a different modified engine from FB2 for consoles. They are making the PC side go to DX10/11 just to utilize these features. Not to mention the slideshows I found showing where DICE plans to go with Frostbite and why.

        If it was the same FB engine across all three platforms then I would say, yeah, its another port.

              DX9 is obsolete now, its not a feature that its not supported anymore than it iss a feature that DX8 isnt supported.

              To keep it brief, DX is a means of talking to the hardware, you could in this case use the terms PC and DX interchangebly. The PC/DX Xbox/SortofDX and PS3/SonyX will all have different builds and you could arguably therefore say that each represented a modified engine but it is much less than that.
              Things may end up looking better on the PC, that doesnt mean that whatever you are looking at will do different things.

                We will have to agree to disagree. Ive done the research on the engine myself. I am no modder or game designer nor do I have the experience in programming to say one thing or another. I do understand what youa re saying. All I can go by are the presentations that I looked at as well as what DICE stated for the PC.

                Like you said, its the same chicken/egg argument and based on a lot of opinion.

                  If its going to be a true 64 player ,we need assets in the game e.g multible helos in the sky and planes. If it just one jet or helo to fight over then its fail.Same goes if they pack 64 into a 32 map size.

                  Oh and about mods, if you read the thread to fan in EA uk forums expaining why mods cant be made. It ends up sounding like a whole lota bull to me,they say you have to search thru 80GB of data for errors just to make a 20GB game.

                    Rambo, did they not do that in 1942,Vietnam, and BF2? I just want to make sure because maybe I missed something.

                      None of which sounded very wrong, in fact it makes a lot of sense from what is in the files, more of a database than the game files you had in BF2. One raw file gets converted to whatever platform the build requires, you build a game rather than a console or pc game.

                        I'd tell them to stop whining, and that if this was BF2 there would be a claymore in this alley and they would be dead :p

                        as for DX, DX9 might essentially be outdated but its still sort of defaulted to so to speak

                        developers will default to DX9 because its common to PC, Breadbin and ecksbawks

                        Using DX10/11 on the other hand shows a level of work has been put into the PC version to improve it and utilise its resources, theoretically there are a lot of things DX10/11 are designed to handle that DX9 could as well; just nowhere near as well performance wise. Extra power like this is why we can have nice things, like 63 people throwing cheat accusations at you, instead of a measly 23 other goons :p

                        well other than the beastly hardware in our monolithic towers (of beauty)

                        and then it turns out poor little Jimmy gets his copy of BF3 on release date, goes to his PC to play the superior version...

                              Some people might still be using Xp, but no gamer at this point should be using a DX9 video card.

                              Though even with the OS steam hardware is showing that windows xp is being used by 23%, while 35% are using windows 7 64 bit. Heck for Non xp windows, Vista/7 32/64 bit, It's a total of close to 68% of steam users. And those numbers are only going to keep getting by the end of the year.

                              Plus with a game like this, yes some users, may still cling to windows xp, I know some that have hacked dx10 into windows just to make use of their dx10 videocard. However with windows 7 being popular, a game like this will force some people to finally ditch the operating system, or at least dual boot, to play this game. If they still refuse to update their OS, and want this game, then they make that choice. It probably will be a while before XP is dropped by other game developers, especially blizzard and valve. However at some point it's Point to happen. This will just help adoption rate speed up a little for gamers, who should have ditched windows xp, back when crysis came out.
