I was part of the hype for BF2, but not long after playing the game I was very dissapointed. I felt like a fool for expecting it to be a good sequel to BF1942.
I am now extremely skeptical about any future games before I give them a good try.
The playerlimit on release will likely depend on the bandwidth capabilites of EA's official servers. BF2 was initially developed for 128 players.
8 maps will be acceptable if they are much larger then BF2's with less restrictions and of far better quality.
I hate the BF2 setting, it's an unbelievable conflict. A middle eastern coalition is rediculous, just look at all the civil violence within countries like Iraq and Lebanon. They won't all of a sudden just decide to get along, form an organised coalition then declare war on the west. But the BS doesn't stop there, they apparently have even satellite and uav coverage as well.
As for China, the west would be stupid to try invading them, plus they wouldn't have a good enough reason to do it in the first place. The west has enough long range strike capability to simply intimidate China. The U.S didn't waste millions of lives by invading the Japanese mainland in WW2, they just used their air superiority to bomb them into surrender.
The weapons and vehicles used in BF2 are obviously poorly researched. The F-35B hasn't even begun production model testing yet and in BF2 Wake Island 2007 has production-like F-35B's fully operational and fighting China in the middle of the pacific.
I have no problem with science fiction settings like BF2142 or Quake or Unreal Tournament as they're obviously not trying to depict near-modern warfare. BF2 tries to depict that, but fails both in realism and fun gameplay.
So if BF3 is just an extension of BF2's BS, i'm already dissapointed.
The one thing I can look forward to in BF3 is it's mods, because all BF titles so far have had mods which surpass the vanilla game. I just hope that EA supports the modders better next time, not just claim to for hype and neglect them like BF2.
Desert Combat for 1942 was great, it's developers have formed Kaos Studios (as well as those who made the third party modding tools for BF) so I have faith that Frontlines will be at least decent. My big concern is whether the UT3 engine has a good first person feel for vehicles.
BF3 engine needs to have:
- Viewdistance =/> BF1942 engine
- Netcode =/> BF1942 engine
- Gun accuracy =/> BF1942 engine
- Flight physics =/> BF1942 engine
- Skill requirements (nothing made easy or random just for n00bs) > BF2 and BF2142
- Mod support > Any previous BF engine
During the development stage of Battlefield 2, I asked them the following question:
Will VOIP feature "proximity -VOIP"? This feature would allow players to communicate with teammates nearby (within hearing range) trough VOIP.
It would also open the interesting possibility of east dropping on enemies, spying on their tactical plans as you are near. Radio silence/whispering would become a new tactical approach.
The official response (e-mail) of Dice was at the time something along the line:
“We have considered this option, but we feel that the option would be abused by immature players.”
I can imaging players cursing /treating /ridicule other players (especially after killing/being killed), but this already happens now in text during the game. Besides, it could be a server option and be strictly team or open and with player mute option.
I think the gaming community is mature/ self regulating enough to handle such an option in the game. And I think it would contribute so much more to an immersive, living gaming arena.
Does anyone have ideas to make to make a strong stand by the community to implicate this feature by Dice/EA?
(Please comment also if you disagree with this "proximity-VOIP"?
Sounds all fine and dandy except the fact that I now have to upgrade to Vista.
and another thing...how big are maps going to be like 80 players? if they're going to have "batallions" of 3-4 squads i mean you're lucky to have that many squads in a reg. game of bf2 maybe 5 for the 64 and they're never full. i'm all for more teamwork but come on guys be realistic
also take out shock paddles, it was a stupid idea from the get go, if you just got 20 holes put in you from an mg36 you cannot revive someone yeah you might be able to do some surgery but revive them? all that did was create stat padders
We don't comment on rumors or speculation. Currently announced titles from DICE are Battlefield Bad Company and Mirror's Edge, you'll hear from us officially as soon as we have anything further to announce. For any future announcements regarding Battlefield keep an eye on www.battlefield.com.
Half the things they tell you will be in it, won't. So they say 8 maps, then expect 4 and a single player/coop map for release.
It will buggy as heck when it comes out.
Booster packs to bring your maps up to a number you wont easily bore with will cost $9.99.
There will be plenty of cheaters.
EA has thier grubby hands on it so you can expect a gold covered piece of dog crap.
Because it will be a "Games for winblows" game and will run on DX 10, the millions of copies they could of sold to XP users will line the dumpsters out in the back of EA headquarters.
• Will ship with 8 maps, each supporting up to 40-players per team 8 maps, wow that`s awesome, not gonna get boring at all
• Same “ticket-based” gameplay style as before Well they are just full of innovation, aren`t they.
• Will feature 34 different weapons (17 for each faction) and another 22 unlocks (for both factions), in total 56 different weapons. Let me guess, all defaults will be ridiculously weak and just stupid cause of the CoF, deviation and who knows what but unlocks will put nukes to shame?
• “Soldier” feature, looks like MMO-styled characters and avatars Take the ranking stupidness to the next level
Looks like BF is pretty much dead for me.
I agree with Snazz.

Thanks for the heads up!
If this is true though, I think it sounds awesome. However, I wouldn't be hoping on seeing custom maps make it to ranked servers. It's too easy for someone to make an unbalanced/glitchy map.

You do have something planned then, but hopefully something different to this tip off
A remake of BF1942 would be the best, so ill keep my fingers crossed
Come on, you know Frontlines is going to be crap like Quake Wars(have you tried vehicles there? lol!), the cravings will set in and then BAM! you're back to the big B, like a bird on it's belly!
Ive played both Frontlines and ET, Frontlines in its extremely early beta state trumps any and all gameplay from ET. I tried the demo of ET and it just.....wasnt fun.....
Although Ive never been a fan of quake wars style of play so I'm sure that influenced my decision alot, nevertheless Frontlines is easily the winner of the two. I expect great things from them, and you can be sure that will be the game that pulls me out of modding BF2.
Why should I buy another BF game? Answer me that, Ive modded BF2 since it started and have gotten treated like crap from di(EA)ce the entire time. Then, when promised better mod support for 2142 I switch over to that to give it a try. What do I get? 0 mod support....there hasn't even been a f*cking editor released for 2142.....
So not only have I been spit on, Ive also been lied to....
So again, what would make you think I would EVER buy another one of there games again?
