Re: Desert Conflict v0.1 Client Released

Well finally got a chance to play it today, i had mixed emotions about it. I was also a pretty big vet of Desert Combat.

      Strong Points:
+Great Maps, faithful to the originals.
+Good vehicles, love the SCUD, but still many need work.
+ARMOR! ARMOR! HOLY CRAP 73 EASTING ARMOR WARS!

      Weak Points:
-I found the weapons didn't feel much like the DC ones, the M16 seems way too overpowered, and its RoF needs to be turned down a bit.
-The vehicles are still somewhat lacking, i was getting hit in the face by 155mm shells and they did nothing, Iraqis with T90s doesn't feel very DC-like, definatly need to get some T72s in there soon.
-Some of the voice commands for the Iraqis could use a bit more excitement, when i say "Go! Go! Go!" the guy practically mumbles the command.
-Arillery system could be improved somewhat, i think the viewpoint needs to be zoomed out.

It is still an Alpha, so i expect it to be improved alot in the coming months, just don't go updateless on us, because that seems to be the leading cause of death in BF2 mods. Look forward to playing this and USI and start getting that nostalgic DC feeling back.

They even got me banned from these forums because they didn't like what I had to say and complained to the TBF mods to get rid of me. So what I'm going to say about DCon right now should stand out even more:

It's the first BF2 mod that has been done right. They actually tried their best to bring back the feel of the original Desert Combat and I think they succeeded with the gameplay mechanics and physics. The helicopters and jets are reminiscent of Desert Combat and require a semblance of skill to fly and the weapons don't have the ridiculous cone of fire the BF2 weapons suffer from.

The maps in DCon still need work, that is a given since it's an alpha release. I've mentioned the lighting issues in other posts and I'm sure the DCon guys are aware of it themselves.

Others have complained about the vehicles being unrealistic because they accelerate too quickly (e.g. tanks). To that I must say, have you ever played Desert Combat? The DC I remember had the same attributes. If I'm not mistaken, this mod aims to mimic the original, so why the fuss?

Furthermore, their emphasis on gameplay over realism is what makes this mod great and I don't understand why people keep comparing it to other failed mods like POE2. POE2 is a mod that had a lot of promise but it didn't deliver for those of us yearning for DC type of combat. It's weapons still suffer from the same inaccurate fire that BF2 has--they only kill faster when zoomed in. While this lends itself to realism, it does nothing for fast paced arcade play which is something DC had in spades and why it was revered so much by the community.

One of the FH2 devs here suggested that bunny hopping and movement speed be reduced--my response as a hardcore DC and skill based FPS fan is to increase the stamina, run speed and keep the jump height as it is. If there are those out there that want slow boring gameplay, I'm sure they will have a home with FH2 (no offense).

Despite my differences with the DCon mods in the past, I want to say excellent job guys. I think you're on the right track with this mod and whatever you do, don't cave to the whiners here.
Is this really joker5150 or just his evil twin?
I remember joker's negative posts, but i gotta give him some credit for this one. I LOVE THE MOD. I have to agree on joker with this though:

One of the FH2 devs here suggested that bunny hopping and movement speed be reduced--my response as a hardcore DC and skill based FPS fan is to increase the stamina, run speed and keep the jump height as it is.
Since the scale of the maps has been increased you need to increase the stamina/run speed to cope with this. Especially lost village and mosoul.

Re: Desert Conflict v0.1 Client Released

got to play your mod today for abit and here is what i have to say. Bear in mind this is Constructive critisum and please do not play the victim game on me like you have already done to so many ppl in this topic...

Personly for me I did not really enjoy the mod that much but that was exspected since I like slow paced combat where you really have to think about your next move etc like in real life :)
your mod just was far to "spammy" for me but that is my personl opioun.

Anyways played Gazala for the first map and thought it was pretty well done. I really liked your guys use of overgrowth but like i mentioned in anouther topic, the hills above the sand, the colour map was a little too red and needs tweaking if you guys can :)
Didn't have much time on this map since it was near the end of the game etc.

next map was El Al. Now there has been lots of reports of lag on this map for players and after playing it, I'm pretty sure I know why. You guys have probaly been trying to work it out for ages but its a problem that reciently crept up on one of my maps and I only noticed it in the editor and not ingame. think it has to do with the dual core CPU but, I'm pretty sure that its your barbed wire fences that are causing the lag. now IMO, it is really tacky to use the wire fence, then shuve it under ground to only leave the top of the fence exsposed to use it as barbed wire... you guys made lots of custom statics and you should have really gone the extra few meters just to make a custom model for it. aint hared, just make a clyinder and then put a texture of barbed wire on it with alpah channels etc :)
Now back to the point, what is probaly the reson why these are lagging your map as it would apear that you added a buch of supply group radius to the top of the wire to damage players as the crossed it. The supply groups is what is lagging the map, and is probaly also lagging all your oher maps that has it on aswell. in BFeditor at the mo we are talking over ways of solving but I think the POE guys might have found a soloution. have a look round the object forums for the topic.
To check it is these fences that are lagging your map, you can just remove them from the staticobjects.con file and then load the map up again and see if you have a perforamnce increase of any kind.

The map itself didnt look to bad, thou I noticed in both the rounds the Iraq team won both rounds (with team switching so basicly, if the map is blanced in theory the better team should win both rounds but aint always the case). just seemed to me for some reason that the Iraq team was always raping some how? dunno maybe check into something that may be unblancing the map, or was it like this in normal DC (i didnt ever play it online, i only had a 56k back then )

Map didnt look too bad, found afew errors here and there but nothing big.

next map was 73 Easting and this map to me just jelt kinda tacky. not sure why it just felt kinda small and not really upto BF2 standard of map. it also felt to me that it was all about the arty and which team could chuck the most missles, SCUDs and arty onto the flag would really win... would be nice if you guys did the roads the "Bf2 way" and not the "42 way" with just a texture on the ground also :p

next map was lost village and ehhh, i dunno it looked nice in areas but this map was really just nade spamming. every one was chucking nades every where there was hardly any gun combat. is this what it was like in DC? dunno didnt really apeal to me atall. map itself looked pretty good thou that .50cal with bipod near that flag to the NE looked kinda silly, was floating off the wall a little and when a guy entered it his feet where through the ground... just looked a little odd.

to the weapons, models and textures etc I felt that most of your models and textures where not quite upto the same level of EAs thou that aint really an issue its just a observation. lots of our models over at PR also aint upto the same standard, but for all our new models we try to go above it if we can :)
1 big note about your weapons is that I noticed that the m16 was full auto... in the kill messages it said it was a M16A2. now a m16a2 only has semi and 3 round burst in r/l but if im not wrong the m16A1 dose have full auto, and I take it that was the M16 in DC? if so, and the m16A2 model from EA is just a place holder you should still rename the kill messages and work on a new model later on when you feel its ready IMO :)

anyways guys well done on your release, hope your mod dose not suffer the same fait as most other BF2 mods with player pop etc and keep on modding!

Hope this post helps you and you dont take it personaly....

Re: Desert Conflict v0.1 Client Released

I would say go back and research DC a little bit more Rhino to help you get a better understanding of this mod. Maybe even play it a bit as well (i am referring to the 1942 Desert Combat). This is just meant to be fun and arcadic as mentioned earlier in this topic.

The only weapon texture that really got to me was the Car-15, I thought it looked literally like it was just ported straight from DC '42. It wasn't weathered down or anything and looked like it was made in ms paint, but all the other weapons were great the way they were.

I wouldn't buy a car, or anything for that matter if the salesperson was acting like this in front of me.
No, But you would take that car if they gave it to you FREE......Idiot

Just to let the dev's know that i have been playing the bf series for years...Since 1942 came out. Without trying to bash any other mods, i have downloaded, played and deleted every mod that has been released for Bf2 so far. I just didn't like the way the mods played or there wasn't anyone playing them.......But that is not the case with Decon. I have already logged more hours playing Dcon than all the mods put together, so that should mean something. Just like alot of people on this forum i have a few issues with the mod that will hopefully be adressed, but i understand that this is only an alpha build and you guys are a small team.

Since in mho you guys have had the most sucesfull mod so far, i hope other talented people will join a winning mod team.

Btw, if an alpha build of this mod is this good.....I can't wait to see what is coming next!

Congats to a mod well done guys.

The reason I tend to think its something else is the fact that 73e and gazala have just as much barb as el al and they've never had any issues. I'm pretty sure 73e has way more than any other map and its never lagged at all ingame (but it does in the editor). That said, we'll be looking into everything from the ground up. if you could, pm a link to the thread you mentioned

                      1. I have played DC before, quite abit but i only got to play SP and very few times on LAN. Arcady style of gameplay didnt both met to me then what I'm saying is that these days its not for me, that is all i wasnt saying you should make it realistic did I?

                      2. I still think it is the barbed wire thats lagging it, i saw it on gazala etc but try to remove it and see if you get a perforamance increase (with the systems that lag on it). if its not the case then there is nothing lost in trying.

                      topic is here: http://bfeditor.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=9750

Not top get off topic, but I can't imagine how a video game could be realistic. Then again, I always hated games like flight sims, and training style games.

Thx for caring enough to write all that Rhino. Lag of any kind is lame, and well fix the couple issues we have with it. I don't agree about LV, its one of the only maps in circulation right now that I enjoy. El Al, Well I win on the US side all the time, depends who is on your side.

Maybe the sand needs work on Gazala, I wouldn't notice or care(assuming its not green or blue, I have some visual standards, lol). If people don't like it, well change it though. I would put it dfar to the back of stuff to worry about, but well look into it Im sure.

Its the only game I am playing, but its the kind of game play I like.

Rhino, I am glad you wrote that.

My gut feeling all along has been with those barbs but it was confusing to me that other maps with more of them wouldnt lagg. Maybe its the size of the map. El Al is 1024x2 and Easting is 512x2. Could that be it??

Also I totally understand your point on Gazala and the colormaps, but I can assure you that those colormaps wont be redone anytime soon. I personally think they are fine and also if you noticed, those roads are made into the colormaps(not and easy task). I cant imagine redoing those again. I have about 44 hours in the colormaps alone trying this and that. It was an experiment that turned out pretty good I must say .

But yeh, I will be tossing your ideas around my head when we start working on the patch.

oke, let me reply to all of this too.
Don't know where to start, cause I saw so many questions and comments.
In the beginning this tread started with a lot of "bashing around" replies.
After that the real serious replies came in.
Joker..... what the **ll happened to you man.
Great reply and I'm not saying that because its a positive one.
Its because it had input we can use.
                              Same goes for rhino.
Always read posts about our mod from you and allmost all of them had some "things" in there that where a bit too much finger pointing, or better say, "teacher" like.
This one is finally build up from your experience.
Thanks for that, and most of all, thanx for thinking with us about the lag, I really appreciate that!

Playing our mod finally give me the change of getting in to it.
People are talking about the lack of city maps, and I think we could need more of them too.
But, remember, its DESERT conflict your playing.
We have some good old city maps whe are working on, and they will be in the next release, I'll think.
The biggest problem that ruines the gameplay i think are the "BF2 noobs" that are playing it.
They really can spoil the gameplay.
I mean: How lame can you be to blow up the scuds in weapon bunkers just to get to the next map because you don't like it.
Never seen that before in DC.

Yes, its our alpha, and yes a lot of things needs to be done.
But we are indeed a small group, who's doing everything it can to get it balanced the way you like it.
You all know that the best way to test it, is to release it.

Thanks for all the comments, thats stuff we can work on.

And for what its worth, I like to play all the other mods too, or watch them closely in their progress.
I will absolutely play FH2, the statics, maps, models, etc just looks asesome.
Eve of destruction? Can't wait for that one!
Oh, and USI, bring out the next release guys, I want to play that one again for sure.
Can't figure out why it hasnt been played that much.
It looks great and I love the stuff thats in there.

We're maybe not the thing you where hoping about, but remember that desert combat was a mod that didnt had to fight against its old legacy.
All the things we do is beeing compared to the uber mod from 1942.
Whe are small, and we do the best we can, believe me.

Oh, and to the one that posted above me: i see no nipples...is that possible or a bug?

well my other theroy is have you overlapped some of the barbed wire in El Al with other barbed wire as that may cuase a big lag effect (I know i overlapped afew bits in my map that i really exsperanced lag in).

a way you could use to make your roads much easily is to acutrly use the road tool, then make a new basic road template that was the kinda colour you wanted to change your terrain too, and then when you have layed out all of your terrain, resave your fianl colour maps (to the bf2 folder), then go back into the level editor, delete your roads (keeping a backup of them of course incase you want to use them again later) and in theroy the colour map used ingame (not the editor ones) will now have a slight change in colour where the roads where to match the colour of the roads
