I swear the crash to desktop is something to do with fullscreen mode. I used to play in fullscreen but bf2 would crash pretty often. Ever since I changed bf2 to run in windowed mode I can't remember the last time I crashed like that. I still get connection problems from time to time but that's another can of worms. anyway... you might want to give it a try at least to see if it help you as much as it did me. then you'll be able to at least play bf again.

to try out windowed moded create a new shortcut to bf2 somewhere and
"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 0

Can I still play on 1.3 servers? If not, can the patch be easily uninstalled?

If you create a copy of your Battlefield 2 folder before patching like it says then you'll be fine.

All looks good to me, can't wait til the full patch is released to get rid of the BETA in bottom right hand corner.

Only had one instance of crashing, turned out to be my Audigy drivers, updated them and all ok.

Shame there's not more servers running 1.4, although that said I've not yet failed to get onto any of the ones that are running it.

(How come I'm showing as a Private....just been promoted to Cpl....)

Here are some screenies I took so people can get an idea of the map
Note: this is the 16 player version, but it is exactly the same as the 64 player one. The only difference is that in the 64 player version the US starts far off and moves into the city just like in Karkand. The fighting itself will be in the city and thats what I took pictures of. It differs from Karkand in that it's more of a sqaurish map, so there are alot more routes to take other than just the inital 3 like in Kark. This means fighting on more fronts. And yes, due to lack of fog, it will be sniper's paradise. Notice how you can see across the whole map from pretty much any high roof.

You can't.

You should have made a backup of you v1.3 BF2 directory prior to installing the beta.

there are only a few EA servers. (5 or 6 for vBF2 )

looks like a 6pm release in the uk boys from wot people are saying on diff forums fingers croosed multiplay move over as soon as release patch is out

well we now know its delayed till tomorrow at the earliest um sure theyll come up with something else wrong tomorrow but we'll see. At this rate 2142 beta will be out before they fix this pis$in game
