What I was about to say ^

If anything, it's more realistc and teamwork is required. Sure the AA is a spoof, J-10 pwns everything and such, but the game was meant to add the concept of realism, not be realistic.

I take fun over realism and balance over imbalance.

I've never heard of a sniper carrying claymores around anyways

in fact in this book on the vietnam war I'm reading right now it's the rifle platoons that carry claymores with them out on patrol, yes regular ol rifleman and machine gunners oh and they had to trigger them with their clackers in order for them to explode

Claymores don't auto detonate when someone walks in front of them. They are charge detonated with a hand held generator or trip mined. And yes you can walk right up to a claymore and it won't go off regardless of what "team" you are on.
This is only recently though isn't it? While claymores have always had the ability to be clacker fired on demand, they were also origionally issued with tripwires.

The thing is to set up a trip wire detonated Claymore takes around 5 minutes. They aren't drop and go. There are some mines that are, and some self deploying mines that can do remote detonation as well, but mainly they are step on and explode mines.

IIRC they US Army don't allow them to be set as "mines" or "Booby traps" any more, and only employed as weapons (IE clacker fired)

And one of the things engineers do by Military Occupational Speciality IS clear mines. EOD is another one.
Exactly. The Claymore is a relatively easy to disarm mine. If you are behind it, you can disarm it so long as no one hits the clacker or trips over the tripwire. at least IRL.

The magic eye bean detonator in BF2 is a little tricky to get around.

But the Engineers SHOULD be able to remove them with relative saftey.

The patch has not taken away realism cos BF2 didnt have any realism anyway. Ever been able to drive fire and reload an abrams single handedly? I think not.
No beyond visual range A2A missles for jets
Transport Helos that can repair in mid air when engineers are in them.
Jets (used to be able to) dive straight at AA pits safe in the knowledge that they werent gonna get hit.

            Hows that for your realism.

Re: The patches have killed the realism.

I knew this thread was begging for a flaming, but I have to side with the thread starter. I'm (and I'm sure he is too) well aware that the game was nowhere near intended to be realistic, but really, you have to draw the line somewhere. I guess since the majority of the community doesn't care, rather, they beg for it, I guess the game's in the right direction..

Things like defibs and .50s not killing in one hit and other things are necessary for the game to be fun. Smaller, but fine details, like USMC running around with PKMs and arabs with G36's and appearing in and out of vehicles and insta-proning are just stupid and unnecessary. I'll probably get flamed for this, but in honour of the subject, I'll take one for the team for the sake of opinion. That's democracy, ain't it?

As for the topic of the thread I havn't really had problems with the claymores as of late but I think I'd rather them be a threat to friendlies as well. ..And besides, isn't it a server-side option?

And the idea that an engineer can defuse a claymore? come on! He should'nt even be able to get close enough to it to defuse it :|:

BF2 has become more of an arcade game than a modern combat strategy FPS game.
I agree on that "it doesn't matter who steps into mine"-part. On the other hand, I disagree when it comes to this defusing a claymore. I was leader of anti-armor squad in military and I almost anybody were able to defuse a claymore after an 30 minutes of practise. Of course it depends on detonator but there isn't a detonator you couldn't defuse if you know how to do it. You actually can get close to claymore, if you spot the wire for example.

BF2 still is the most advanced strategy FPS-game in the world in my opinion, don't know what's the state of Op Flashpoint at the moment though.

You cant make a game so grand, to be as real as it gets. Thats too much work.
Personally, all the bitching aside, I think DICE already did a wonderful job. Hell, no game has held me playing it for so long and so much.

IFF mines aren't even that unrealistic. I've read a couple articals about research being done into them now.

I'm just happy that I can lay a mine and not get TKs.

Edit: Oops. Didn't see page two. :p

I disarmed a couple clays tonight. The squad mate that was with me didn't know you could do that. He was amazed.

Apart from setting them on the ladder end, defensively, which caused a lot of "bad Pg Dwn" action, mines were used too offensively. Idealistically they wer esupposed to be there to cover snipers back. In reality they were used for cheap kills. And that, accompanied with the TKs, got people mad. Sure I was fracking ****ed at every TK I got. But that only taught me to place them where idiots, retards, dumbwits and smacktards wouldnt step. This didnt leave me much space to be used, but it did leave some.

I think the patches have added realism and made it better with the exception of the teamkills thing, which is better too. I wouldn't even bother mining because I knew chances were a car filled with teammates would drive over it and I'd get banned for teamkills. And I'd rather not get punished for other people's stupidity. And engineers should be able to disarm claymores. Everything in BF2 should have something to counter it with.

Re: The patches have killed the realism.

Yes, EA has definitely gone way out of their way to make this game as noob friendly as possible, to the point of being ridiculous. Even though there are big huge red warning icons over the mines and claymores and a big bright red warning icon shows up on the righ side of your HUD when your nearing a friendly mine or claymore, people still somehow get themselves tk'd.

Not only has EA already done it's best to reduce the skill needed, so that new players have a good chance against experienced players, now they've gone to the next step of dummy proofing the game so inattentive players and noobs alike can't get killed by friendly mines and claymores.
Like baby proofing a home, they are baby proofing the game, and what a shame.

Fortunately, in competition play, most leagues and ladders require that game setting allow players to be killed by friendly claymores and mines. Otherwise competiton matches would turn into a joke as well.

Only problem is that in their zeal to make the game as noob friendly as possible which each new patch they seem to introduce a host of new problems.

                                POE where are you??
                                I agree ^^^^

I enjoy this commonly used argument because people who bunnyhop/m203 say that by fixing these issues Dice has "noobed" up the game. I would like to take this opportunity to reverse the issue, and say... how easy is it jump and prone all over the place when you're being shot at? I used it when it was around and it makes dodging shots easy as hell... so the strategy that is more "noobish" is really based on your perspective and preferred style of play. Spamming the space bar is actually incredibly easy. I find that watching where you're going, always having to monitor where the enemy is, and traveling in groups w/ squads without having the prone spamming and jumping as a crutch is actually more difficult.. go figure.
They could have fixed dolphin diving and bunny hopping and still let us jump and fire. Not like jumping and firing gave that much of an advantage anyways...it gave way less accuracy than being prone and its not any harder to hit someone jumping than it is to hit someone standing still...
