He isn't getting spit on for posting the guide, he's getting spit on for making this comment:

    :p
If he had just posted the link to the website nobody would have given him a hard time. Taking shots at pilots who could actually get kills in air to air before 1.2 without the idiot proof missles is the reason he got flamed.

PS: Nice link, I enjoyed the read, but as mentioned the BF2 relevance is nil.

Indeed. It's a personal failing of mine that I have little tolerance for people who refuse to learn and adapt and would rather b!tch than think.

      We all got our flaws.
      I'm comfortable with mine.

BTW, the stab was because I knew people would flame the thread regaurdless of content.

Re: Gift to Pilots stuggling to adapt.

I have a question which has a further range, AA or TV Guided?

Because If AA can't lock onto a heli at a certain range, however the TV Guided has a farther range and can make it, then that would be a good tip.

Good question Poison... and my answer would be "I donno".
This thread is about Air to Air, tho. Would be nice if it didn't get derailed quite so quickly.

Re: Gift to Pilots stuggling to adapt.

Cool website, and nobody on my side of the fence thinks he misspoke when he addressed people who would be whining about the new system. If you think he was, you grossly underestimate the depravity of the mob at patch times.

To anyone who says knowing that and practicing that is inconsequential to flying in BF2 is probably not a very good dogfighter in bf2. Especially to those of us with TrackIR in-game, those moves are how we get on people's tails, and while that used to get us kills, it keeps getting us kills.

Those of us who actually know how to fly and have been doing it since the 42 days see this patch as just bringing balance back. We already know how to play against AA you have to worry about and tails you have to worry about. If you don't think they matter, then please come play on the server run by the Krackhouse community, I could use more easy targets

I wrote a guide that I adapted from my original BF1942 flying guide here(pics/illustrations courtesy of MS flight sim 2 handbook mostly...you try illustrating w/stick figure drawings)

Re: Gift to Pilots stuggling to adapt.

the biggest problem is friendly AA, I too have sometimes shot down friendly jets with AA.
friendly AA in 1.2=100% chance to hit if it decided to go after friendlies.

Re: Gift to Pilots stuggling to adapt.

BF2 uses about 5% true air to air combat skill, some has to do with the jet dynamics, also another part has to do with scale and speed. If you are a true air combat buff, first don't ever compare BF2 with any true air sims such as Lockon, Falcon 4.0 or even CFS. Second never take away the skilled WWII flyers, it took very skilled guys to be great in a piston aircraft.

I think the link you posted was a nice thing, but you took away from the post by challenging the skills of many great flyers out there. Plain and simple whether or not you think the patch even the playing field your wrong, they were poor in coding from the start and still are. They need to fix locking on targets to actually go to that target, I have also said from the beginning, the jets and copters should have a fixed amount of flares to dispense, not a infintite reloading system.

Just kidding. Anyway. I agree that it has "moved" but it has moved to a level that doesnt require that much skills to keep the plane on the OpFors tail. This was perhaps the most entertaining thing for me. And I kinda dont like the change, I dont like it at all. From a BF2 prepatch dogfighters perspective.

Anyhow, thanks for the link. Im a sucker for a good read.

Re: Gift to Pilots stuggling to adapt.

You can still shake pilots, you just have to do it "before" the lock. You also have to actively dodge then entire time. These is no comfort zone in the air now, anytime you're flying straight is asking to have someone put a missile in you.

Although, the missiles are kinda' nuts. Dice/EA could have went the route of PRMM. The missiles attack realistically, yet, they are blazingly fast.

Re: Gift to Pilots stuggling to adapt.

I feel like this thread is somewhat targeted at me. As I think I'd fall in the "elite" pilots catogeory, and have been rather vocal in how much I destest the changes they made to my beloved plane (even though I do not fly anymore, nor have I flown in over 3 months). In fact, if you're only concerned with numbers I am the best pilot in the game, and every single number I have, from KDR to SPM is the best in the game. That isn't a brag, although it certainly could be, but that is akin to listing your qualifications on a resume, so people know that you know your stuff.

I can tell you, with all of my experience, and my honest testimony I was never bested in an even dogfight in 1.1, ever. This game hasn't become more skilled, it has become far less skilled. Skill is one of the things that attracted me to piloting, because when you're a pilot your skill level is magnified as you have far more firepower at your fingertips than any infantry. Now though in 1.2 racking up a large score as a pilot is mostly based off of two things, luck (meaning, not getting targeted often by AA, seeing the enemy pilots at random before they see you), and the pure incomptence of an enemy team (playing on a stacked team, base raping an enemy with one flag). Skill is still a factor, as I'm still able to rack up big scores and come off every game with a gold medal like I used to, and while almost 3 months out of practice. But I'm no longer able to or guaranteed to dominate every single game without question through air superiority and dogfighting experience.

Of course, that's just on the piloting end of things, and of course now the skill in dealing with pilots with groundf AA has taken an even more devastating hit.

And no, that isn't based off of "real world" aviation experience and knowledge, but rather the only kind that counts, BF2 piloting knowledge and experience.

I should have added that it's the conceptual understanding of that site that's important... not the hard and fast rules it presents. Learning to visualise where your opponent is without having LOS on him is a HUGE skill as is being able to predict how he's likely to try to break.

You'll note I said as much in an ealier post. It's still arcade flying, but now it has more elements of modern air combat than before. It's those elements that have thrown some folks for a loop. I'd really like ta see 'em come to grips with the new system and become more effective instead of complaining endlessly.
And yeah, it took some serious balls to fly those old WWII planes. My own father was trained in the RCAF during that period. I've heard lots of stories. And yes, he's a perty old fella.

I took a stab at the people that will complain and flame this thread regaurdless of the content, while specifically attempting to help out some folks that are good pilots, but are having trouble making the jump from WWII style dog fighting to modern day knife fighting. As it turns out, there's some bitter BF2 vets that just need a nudge in the right direction.

Well, making games is hard. Especially when trying to code up so many different elements into one game and not making it too complicated for casual Joe Gamer to get into. Add in the fact that EA is netorious for being deadline Nazies who demand releases at their specific dates whether or not the code is ready, and I've got a little more sympathy for Dice than many folks.

Having a fixed number of flares is something I'd personally go for... but as things stand right now, it would be a little much. It would compound the current gripes rather than solve them (unless you were to dispence with the flare reload timer, but that could have some nasty impact on game balance).
