I've not fired rifles fitted with sniper scopes, but have used SUSAT and SUIT sights, plus Lee Enfield No.4. Mk1 .303 (which it the closest to a sniper rifle in the game) and with iron sights up to 800 yards could manage a very tight grouping. The only weather variable we used to take into account was wind direction and strength. All the other variables only come in to play at much greater distances. Cemmyz mentioned; using sights, you know the range, dial in the sights..
As Amtrak has already said, attempting to relate real life to BF2 is pointless. Being a good sniper in an arcade game will not help you in the slightest on the ranges. If that's what you want, join a gun club or get some other supervised training.
The best you can do in game is to practice. Start a private server, get a mate to join, have him stand at different distances and practice moving the sights up and down a little until you can hit him at different ranges. It's as simple as that.

Although this has nothing to do with the game, I feel like I have to say something since I'm somewhat interested in sniping. One thing people seem to forget is that you don't just need to figure out wind speed and direction at your and the target's location. There's also the wind between the two. It's one of the nifty new features that comes on the computer-thingy for the Cheytac M-200 rifle. Oh, and the curvature of the earth....

I suggest you read the book Ultimate Sniper by Major Plaster. Its the most comprehensive book on sniping out there. Its about 700 pages long. His site is at http://www.ultimatesniper.com/ (get the revised version). I have read and watched most of his material and attended a few doesnt courses on the subject, including his own.

As for comparison, BF2 sniping is nowhere near "real" sniping. The only game that i have played which comes close is Joint Operations Typhoon Rising.

Why? Becuase you have to adjust windage and elevation, you have to use a range finder to estimate distance, you have to use binoculars to spot targets, you have to adjust for bullet drop, also the scope sight moves very slightly (constant motion as if holding gun).

In BF2 its point and shoot. No real challenge.

Most people accepted into this program are skilled shooters. Many are former NRA competition shoots.

If this is your goal then i suggest you enroll yourself into several sniper training courses now while your in high school. They cost between $300-$900. But, they will teach you the fundamentals and intermediate skills that will put you at the top of the selection list. Just make sure they are "sniper" courses and not NRA or wannabe schools. Lastly, if you enjoy playing sniper. Then get Blackhawkdown / Sabre Edition.

Their online game play has a server called "Florida Snipers". Its owned by some SOCCOM people in Tampa.

The server is setup so that only the sniper class can be used. The game consist of 18 snipers on several "VERY REALISTIC" maps. The games typically last 1hr or longer. You sneak around trying to spot the other snipers and take them out.

Whats great about this server is all are experienced. So its always one-shot one-kill, all the obvious sniper hideouts are rigged with claymores, and its very hard to find them. Noobs get slaughtered, with these experienced guys using the knife most of the time.

Its an awesome server and the maps are the best i have every played. But, after awhile you get tired of making all those adjustments to shoot a person. (ie. range finder, elevation and windage, selecting ammo, using dotmil etc.).

Buts thats whats great about it too. If you choose the wrong ammo (bullet weight and caliber) then you might not hit your target.

Since this is an older game, you can get both at compusa for $20 (blackhawk down + Sabre Expansion Pack)

Lastly, on that Florida Snipers server, expect very few kills. The most i ever got after 2hrs of gameplay was 17 kills.

Also because the game requires intense concentration, your constantly looking through your scope and binoculars to spot targets while moving slowly so your not spoted and shot, expect your eyes to get sore after awhile (just like the real thing).

After a few hours of game play, your going to be exhausted. But, the goal is to not get killed at all and get the most kills.

So the overall goal is never EVER get killed and kill as many others as possible. You will find some of the top players are just like that. They get 15 or 22 kills and no deaths.

You will hear a gun shot once every 40 of 60 seconds. Then silence, while that sniper repositions himself so nobody spots him.

EDIT: The reason I need the MOA is, because without it, my range estimations would be up in the 700-800- 1000's, because of real life, large optic scopes.

I think the Mil-dots on the BF2 scopes are there for show.

I'd say none of this game makes sense when compared to RL. Nothing you shoot or see with be over 200 to maybe 300m. RL your target maight be 1000m.

If you look at the tanks, the main cannons have marks below to let you know where to aim for what range. The onyl time this ever came in handy was when I decided to shoot for the aircraft carrier on Dalin Plant. After taking random pot shots, I decided to guess the range I was shooting by the distance to the flag on the carrier, 500m. The ticks were at 1000m intervals. I couldn't even figure where 500m lay. Everytime I shot I'd hit something, but never kill and I couldn't make out anything but vague outlines.

The sniper rifles uses go only to about slighty below the center. Any lower/farther than that and you prolly can't see the guy unless your running at ultra-resolution.

Also dont forget in RL snipers work in team of 2, shooter an spotter.
