I too had this occur last night.I had entered a server and my sound went crazy and started cracking and popping then a loud screech.I immediately rebooted the system and rejoined the server and it was the same.
I figured it was the sound card so I uninstalled the drivers pulled the card out and ran driver cleaner in safe mode.
I figured I would just run off my onboard (AC97) sound till I was able to get a new card.Anyway after installing the latest drivers from Realtek and firing up BF2 again there was little difference. The sound is all choppy and Voice over(Commander and teamate statements) are all messed up.Some weapon sounds are missing and the game crashes to desktop.
Then I said frig it and done an entire reformat.Spent all night and part of the morning getting this thing back to normal.
To make a long story short the reformat did absolutely nothing.
So I've been hardware trouble shooting all day and reading but can't seem to figure this out.
I have run every possible CPU stress test, memory drive tests to see if I could crash this machine but no way.
I ran 3DMark 06 and out scored my previous best by 16 points.
We had a severe winter storm here and I was going to replace the motherboard but everything was closed.

I dunno guys?I wish we could get some help on this.

        Specs.
        My System Specs:
        Amd64xp3800+Venice
        Asus A8N SLi Motherboard
        2gig (4x 512) PC3200DDR Ram
        Leadtek 7800GT
        Sound Blaster Audigy

I find it strange this happend to us and it is certainly confusing the hell out of me

        [Valhalla]Omerta

After all this I figured it must be hardware.
The PB updates never fixed anything and by-passing the router didn't help.
So I figued the onboard Ethernet adapter or whatever it's called must have fried.
I purchaced a PCI 10/100 Ethernet card and stuck that in and guess what?Still nothing.
So now I'm down to replacing the Motherboard right?
But I thought some more of what I had not tried yet.
I created a new online account to see if that would make some crazy sort of difference.
Well for frig sake the new account works perfectly. No sound issues or lag at all. This has got to be the weirdest thing I ever experienced in my life.
I logged back into my [Valhalla]Omerta account and it's all messed up?

I just have to go look at every single setting on each of these accounts and try and find a reasonable explanation for this.

          OMG

I just logged into my account and it's working perfectly now
          I'm happy but friggin confused?
I don't do well with things that don't make sense to me but I guess the only plausable explaination was the bad PB update right?Or was it?:hmm:
Anyway I'll see ya'll in here if it occurs again.

Re: SOUND PROBLEMS starting on Jan 31st - Punkbuster possible reason??????

            Hi,

We have worked with a few users and they have found the new attached pb
client to work. I would like to ask that you please also test it and
            give me your feedback.

Please make a backup of your pb folder in your BF2 folder. Then extract
the files into your BF2/pb folder and overwrite the existing pbcl.dll file.

After you have done this, please join a few BF2 servers. Let me know how
            it runs.

If you still experience problems please do the following. Please
download the "PCI32.ZIP" Version 1.4 from here:

Please extract the files from the ZIP archive to a folder on their local
hard disk. Please open a command prompt (Start->Run...->cmd or
            Start->Run...->Command)

Navigate to the folder where the file is stored and enter the following:
            pci32 -S >data.txt

After the program has finished, please send the data.txt file to my
email address so I can take a look at it. Thank you!

            Regards,
            Bjoern

Excerpt from the helpful guys at PB. My account seemed cured till i did the DLL swap as he asked. I am reverting to the old PB set of files. This all seems very weird to me. I even got 2 free unlocks today for some bizarre reason. what the frig is going on with this game??

I actually started having this problem right after I created a new account so I don't think it's in any way related to that. And I had it on both accounts. When did you create the new account? It seems the problem got fixed with the patch to PB on 2/1/06. I'm guessing you created the new account after that and that's why it's working.

I guess too it's PB related. I fortunately don't have this problem, but since early this week I get kicked from EVERY match I join due to 'a prior kick/ban vote' that never happened. Seems this started the same time that all the other problems that you guys describe occured.

Hope the people at Punk Buster get ther sh*t together any time soon.

hmmm, that's interesting. My problem seems to be magically fixed now as well.
I still don't see why punkbuster would be creating such a problem with sound.

                    ***Edit***
It did appear that it was fixed but I am still hearing the poping sound when entering the servers. It's not as loud, but still there.

Re: SOUND PROBLEMS starting on Jan 31st - Punkbuster possible reason??????

Hate to drag up such an old topic but I've got a problem and this seems to be the only related topic to it on this board.

I just started getting this weird squeaking scratching sound described in this topic. It starts off slow, usually about a minute after joining a server and gets worse and worse. It just started doing it after a few days of working fine.

Basically I just completely overhauled my pc and decided to reinstall bf2 after a long time of not playing. I got the booster pack disc version, upgraded to 1.41 and then had to do all the **** to get it to work on widescreen. Now I have this sound issue. Not to mention I randomly get booted to desktop midgame. This is exactly why I quit playing in the first place, the game is too much of a hassle to get working.

My soundcard is the X-FI progamer fatality edition. Also, AMD64X2 4400+, 2GB DDR 400, 7900GS, in case you need to know.

                      Thanks.

I had exactly the same problem... until i updated my drivers.

So head over to this link: http://uk.europe.creative.com/suppor...pe=0&x=31&y=23

and, btw, "Pro" stands for "Professional", not "Programmer". Hope that fixes your problem.

Also make sure that in BF2 sound is set to X-Fi, and Ultra High. Plus, exsure that your system isn't using onboard sound, i can't imagine it is seeing as you are getting output.

Just noticed that there don't appear to be any drivers here, only applications.

Still have a look around and make sure that there is nothing missing.

sorry, I meant pro gamer...there shoudl be a space in between. And my drivers are up to date. My onboard sound IS enabled but only because I use it as a second sound card so I can plug headphones/mic into the onboard and have game sound through speakers and chat over headset. Flight Simulator X supports this feature and its too nice to not use. I guess this could cause problems though...

I would try re-sitting the card back in the PCI slot in case it has become loose.
