firstly how could i be a nvidia fanboy if i reccomended an ATI card

and i was just saying dont get the x1600xt because its only a little better than the 6600gt because of its crappy 128bit interface compared to 256 of a 6800gs

Are u sure there are heat issues with ATI cards? My X800XL overclocked at 430/1070 (the reduced overclock that i SPECIALLY made for BF2, cause BF2 doesn't like vid card overclock) runs at 32C idle, and around 50C when playing BF2. Also, i MIGHT have to agree that AMD needs a bit better quality control for their non-opteron CPUs (opterons are all very good, they're pre-tested by AMD), i mean, some people can overclck their 3200+ from 2.0ghz to 2.7ghz on stock HSF, while mine can run up to only 2.35ghz. :cry: :hmm: :shakehead :wall:

just unlucky i guess... got mine to only 2.4 ghz, but i know you are supposed to go further...Maybe our computernerdexpertwanabe Talus has an answer to this

Your not SUPPOSED to get any OCing at a set frequency. One thing many people dont know about OCing is that it depends on the mobo. All 3200+ Venice's can OC the same! But you need a good mobo for OCing. DFI lan party mobo's are AWESOME x100000 for OCing. You could probably get like 2.75 with one of those. Mine is also pretty good. But gettings like a gigabyte? probably not so good. Even though my mobo is very very small, it is a great OCer and I could not afford a Lan party mobo so thats why I got this. Epox is also very good for OCing.

Ya, i know, i got a DFI Ultra-D, i set my ram to a 2:3 divider, and i got my mem running at 2.7v, and the CPU at 1.65v. Trust me, i got the bad batch, i had a whole forum under hardware and i asked how i could overclock further, but it's official, i can't unless there's some 'magic' stuff that overclockers use. ALso, my temps are down at 27C idle, and 40C load (good airflow, but i still got stock HSF). Anyways, if i get a new CPU, i'm getting an opteron, those things are pretty much guaranteed to overclock at least .5ghz. If ur lucky, u can even get it to over 1ghz OC on stock cooling.

BTW: I don't consider Talus a hardware expert, good with hardware he is, but i would consider people like WReck, Flanker, MatDef, and liljimmynorton better in hardware.

Any one of those would give your GREAT performance over your current card, and is the best card for the price range you specified.

I would also highly advise you upgrade to 2GB of RAM. You may get one of the fastest video cards on the block, however, to run everything on high, you need more RAM, period.

When it comes to amd, a lot of it is the board, but even more is the cpu, like eddy said. He was unlucky enough to get a bad batch and nothing will change that, not even a "better" board. Also, all of a certain series can not oc the same, it all depends on the stepping and the week that proc was made. Most of the 1xx optys can hit incredible oc's but certain steppings like cabge, completely suck and people are having a hard time getting them above 2.3-2.4. I'm doing ok right now, but I gotta get a better heatsink, cause this ones holding me back.

If you are the type of person willing to spend around $400 on a graphics card then I would recommend spending an extra $150 and get yourself an ATI X1900XTX. It's definately, worth the money for the performance and features that you are getting. Plus its in stocked and wont have any competition for the next few months.

If you want a card that has all of the bells and wistles but dont want to pay a premium, then the 7800 GT 256 is the best choice. The cards are under $300 now and out performs it's competitor the x1800XL (which should be considered as being phased out).

For those of you who are on a thighter budget but still wants a card that performs well should consider the 6800GS which sells for under $200. Although it's older technology it offers the best performance for a card in this price range.

Anything lower and you begin to compromise game features and performance.

BUT...at $100 you can get either X1300pro or 7300GS. Unfortunately, there aren't many reviews of the 7300GS. But I'd be more inclined to go with an X1300pro if I were that seriously strapped for cash.

anyways, I'd sum up the state of graphics market like this:
ATI has a really good selection for the High-end.
Nvidia has a good selection for Mid-range.
and both offer an ok selection of value cards, but these cards are not well suited for modern games.

Mostly right, but I can't recommend the xtx for one simple reason: price.
The xtx costs $100 more than the xt, but it's only 25mhz core/50mhz mem faster the xt, which can easily be oc'ed to reach that. If you're gonna get a x1900, get the xt, not the xtx.

I have to agree with the posters slamming the ATI cards. I was a diehard ATI user for 2 years. Radeon 9600PRO, X700, X800GT, and then I took a chance. I read some reviews, I listened to what you guys said, and I did something that has netted me a 300% increase in graphics performance. I switched back to Nvidia. Go with the 6800GS (make sure you go with the factory OC'ed edition)
I loved the card soo much I decided this would be my platform for me to finally build my SLI system. All I can say is Nvidia's drivers are not nearly as buggy as ATI, the cards really work hard to sqeeze the last morsel of graphic detail out of an image and if you choose XfX brand (Lot's of great reviews) it is a very well built card with tons of heat dissapation technology built right in to a beautiful card. ATI doesn't suck, they are just in a slump right now. I feel the X1900 card is a bad play for them. The card is priced out of reach for most gamers, and the Crossfire technology is defiantely going to fail as it dumbs the works down to the speed of the slowest card. ATI seems to be blowing it left and right. They lost the deal with Nintendo and Microsoft for Console graphics chips, their stock is plummeting and they are offering no GPU in the 6800-7800 range that even comes close to holding it's own. Just my 2 cents.
